Each chapter ends with a section of quick tips summarizing their recommended actions and a list of selected references. There is an index at the end, which I have not had a chance to review.Many of the health recommendations are going to sound familiar, but I appreciated getting a new understanding of why these recommendations are so important. For example, after reading about the oral microbiome, I am feeling a lot more urgency to brush and floss my teeth more often and to pay attention to what is in my toothpaste.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about medical research. If you don’t think you would enjoy reading about studies conducted on germ-free mice or learning about how bacteria influence the levels of cytokines that affect inflammation and the immune response, then this may not be the book for you.I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting.

This can give us an idea of what might work in humans, but mice aren't humans. The other studies tended to be population studies, so the cause and effect are not as certain.Beyond suggesting some changes in diet and avoiding antibiotics unless really needed, there was not a lot of practical advice for right now. Mostly, they talked about areas of future study and things that may be available in the future. The overall format of the book was to focus on a part of the body (not just the gut), briefly describe what we know about the human microbiome in that area, and describe various common chronic conditions and diseases where changes in the microbiota might help (mostly based on findings from studies on mice).I received an ebook review copy of this book from NetGalley.
This was a very interesting and informative book about how to age better and healthier. The research was very extensive. I liked the fact that after each chapter the authors provided references for further reading, if you so desire. Also included are guided tips and suggestions to help maintain a healthier lifestyle.As someone living with a chronic illness, I have read many helpful books on the gut microbes. But this book has opened my eyes to the many other microbes in different parts of the body that affect our health. The information was quite fascinating and helpful.

I got this book several years ago at the Iowa Homeschool Conference. I have since purchased several copies for family members, and am sometimes temped to order a back-up copy for our home when it gets completely loved and worn out...which is bound to happen, considering how often we use this book. I have 3 children, all under 7, and my children use this book on at least a weekly basis, both for bird identification, but also for learning small tidbits about the birds. It's not an exhaustive bird buide- but it is a super-handy reference.. .and I especially like that they are grouped by color... something that makes finding them in the book relatively easy, even for pre-readers. THANK YOU!
We love this book, it is mall enough to leave on the table or tuck into a bag. The pictures are colorful and well printed. We just moved to Iowa and saw birds we did not recognize so we are happy to have this smart and concise book. There is just enough information to identify birds but not enough to overwhelm. The birds are organized by color. On the page side of the book on top there is a color code which can be seen when the book is not opened. This makes finding the birds very easy.
Photos good and helpful - Color method of finding birds, in this case, IMHO, problematic - IMHO someone should change the printing so ALL the color swatches on the sides of the page don't line up but gradually index one after the other going down the edge of the page - Kinda' like some old dictionaries that had small indentions cut away about the size of a finger tip - Again, Just IMHO
I have my own copy of this book and use it, often. We will give this copy to a young family so that they can increase their budding knowledge of our area birds. It is a hand size for carrying along or keeping near a window. It does not contain all of the birds we see in our rural yard, but it is quick, easy, and fun to use.
This is a great little book! We own a copy and we have purchased 2 or 3 copies as gifts. It is very easy to use and even my youngest child (age 5) can use it to identify birds because of its easy color-coded organization. I highly recommend for a casual backyard bird watcher!
I especially liked the use of color for identification, side markings make finding the birds quick, and the illustrations are wonderful.
I purchased this book for a gift, but when it came the front corner was broken. Not a very pretty gift!
I'll admit it, I like the way that Stan Tekiela organizes his books. The color organization makes it so easy to find the bird you've seen. The photos are helpful in IDing and I like how he has put male and female photos for identification. He even lists them under different colors to help with identification. (For example the male redwing blackbird is listed under Black while the female is listed under Brown). He also includes a comparison between similar-looking species to help you correctly identify what bird you've seen.

I wrote a review on J Thomas Rompel book Citizen Warrior The 4th Branch II was in a hurry so it was kind of short the book was very good. I now have read the @nd book in the collection . I think it was great I was telling my wife about it so she read it as well and went and got the first book and liked it as well. One Down was fast paced and a fun read , I live in Tucson AZ and it's a little to close to the truth to be labeled as fiction or action book . It's the way it is by the Border this book should be required reading by all government elected offials. the only problem I have with this now I have to wait for the next book in the series.
I choose this title for my review has I enjoy reading this book 2 in J. Thomas Compel series. A fan!
The book moved very quickly with lots of action. This book to be read by all who like action movies.
Believable premise and plot for the most part. But the author needs an editor - badly - to work on grammar, spelling, dangling phrases that make no contextual sense. Those make the book very difficult to read and enjoy. Way too much repetition of feelings and emotions of the major players - at the wrong times. That made me skip over several chunks of text. A little of someone's innermost thoughts goes a long way in this kind of book. There's were a few leaps of logic ( or maybe faith!) throughout the book that didn't help getting through and comprehending the plot. Last, men in these situations don't "dab at their eyes" when the tears come! they wipe them away.
Interesting insight on one of the major problems of our Republic. I strongly recommend this interesting book , a must read for anyone who is concerned with how the deep state is destroying our Constitution and the United States.
This is a fast-paced, gripping story that, for me, was a cover-to-cover read. The characters are well developed and the theme action-packed and contemporary. Though a work of fiction, I see parallels to today’s America. Highly recommended; especially suited for those readers who empathize with Citizen Warriors and can envisage themselves in one or another role of the protagonists.
A great follow up on the first book in this series. Good list of characters. Keeps you engrossed to the point of not wanting to put it down. Can't wait for the next one.
Entertaining, plausible, fast paced, technical, and you better hold on to your hat when you get on this ride. I only slowed down twice and read it all the way through

I just finished reading this book aloud over lunch to my kids (six of them, ages 13 to 2) and I would say that it was a hit, overall. As you might expect with that age range, there were various degrees of "getting it" amongst the kids! However, we have also watched a DVD series called *Last Chance to See* that originally introduced us to the Kakapo, so that helped.Pros: fantastic photos! Wow! The text is enthusiastic, beautifully descriptive and has some nicely placed tongue-in-cheek parts. I was particularly interested in the sidebar piece on the original New Zealand conservationist, Richard Henry, and have assigned my 13yo the work of doing a report on him...seems like a great story waiting to be written by someone.Cons: Perhaps I was looking (personally) for some bits of more adult 'depth' to the writing and that would have been out of place for the overall work and it's anticipated audience; I'm not sure. I was greatly saddened by the unspoken but clear ENORMOUS amounts of money spent on each Kakapo alive. I would not want any species to go extinct, but - ouch! - so much on this bird species. However super-cool they are, they do not have the value of human life. Sometimes it's hard to get the right balance.
Kakapo Rescue: Saving the World's Strangest Parrot should have been sub-titled Saving the World's Most Endearing parrot. They are so cute, fascinating, and lovable. And endangered. As of the publication date, there were 93 left - all on one island, Codfish Island, south of New Zealand. The book, from Scientists in the Field, is the story of the people trying to save the Kakapo and the fascinating facts we are learning about this bird and the other unusual inhabitants on Codfish Island. All tween readers (and adults) will love this story and want to volunteer to camp out on Codfish Island to be a nest-minder. The beautiful photos will hold the attention of even the most reluctant reader and all readers will be crossing their fingers for a happy ending for the eggs of Rakiura and Cyndy (only one ends happily). All readers will fall in love with Sirocco the kitten-like old Kakapo who wants, and desperately tries, to get human companionship. Hopefully, all readers will have a better understanding of how fragile our Eco-system is. A great read for 10-14 year old who think they don't like non-fiction or science books.
I bought this as a gift for my mother, who is a staunch supporter of conservation. I wanted to introduce her to the story of these beautiful, fascinating birds, and this book definitely delivers! A good mix of photographs, history, and information about the kakapo and the ongoing conservation efforts to protect them. The book itself seems (so far) well made, and holds up to casual reading fairly well.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, especially those who enjoy reading about efforts to protect endangered species.
This book was an interesting chapter book I have ever read. The book was full of fun facts about the Kakapo Parrot. I have never heard of this parrot before and to read this book and learn about it and how it is considered rare was amazing and made me realize how important birds are in the world we live in. I like how this chapter book was easy and gave readers facts about the bird. Saving the bird was the main focus overall but each chapter of this book was wonderful to read and learn how the people set out to try and save the rare and mysterious flightless parrots. The author connected very well with pictures which were the actual photos taken throughout the journey to help save these parrots.
This is a wonderful book! Saving this species of parrot, which I didn't know existed, from extinction is such a worthy cause. The dedication of the author and those who working is awesome!
