Although it gets quite "wordy" at times, I really had no trouble visualizing his words and experience. I think it help to have a map of the area he is talking about to appreciate the book more. We are headed to Namibia in a few days, and I feel that this book will enrich that experience. He doesnt really encounter the rhino until 3/4 of the way through the book, but that is half of the fun. His descriptions of the other humans in his story are rich. I felt there was quite a bromance going on with one of the characters, in the end you find out why. You will be moved.Mr. Bass shifting his writing between his concern for his grizzlies in the USA and that of the black rhino in Namibia really drives home the need for our concerns for the environment and conservation.
I agree with previous reviews that said there is not much about rhinos or Namibia but plenty about the author's feelings. Definitely not a good source for anyone who is interested in Namibia or rhinos. Indeed, a rhino sighting doesn't even occur until page 150. I trudged through or skipped numerous sections filled with philosophical soul searching and rhetorical questions.
This is a philosophical treatise with the Namibia black rhinos as a central theme.
This was an interesting and informative read, a must for anyone travelling to Namibia or interested in the plight of the rhino.
"The Black Rhinos of Namibia" appear infrequently and fleetingly in this rambling reminiscence of a sojourn the author made to a rather small part of that country several years before the appearance of this book. The disparity of many of its passages suggests their having been culled from a journal to fit on pages among recollections of numerous times and places. The work is so distinctly personal as to manifest the author's conversations with himself - the essence of any good journal. The reader is taken wherever the author has been and treated to his innermost thoughts there, regardless of their disjunct and inchoate state. The appraisal of the book one renders is highly dependent upon one's expectations, objectives, prejudices.As a planner and leader of African wildlife safaris, I am concerned for the impression left on the reader who may aspire to see wildlife in Namibia or other African countries. The experience related by the author throughout much of the book requires considerable expense (or fortunate invitation) while offering rather long odds of realizing one's objective. In his Epilogue the author writes disparagingly of Etosha National Park where I've seen a black rhino with a young calf near a road when neither ran from the close encounter. Lodges in the heart of the park provide accommodation at reasonable cost, although I prefer Halali and Okaukuejo to Namutoni, the fort where the author and Dennis stayed. Park visitors are virtually assured of seeing far more wildlife by its roads and waterholes than by wandering the spaces of Damaraland. By all means experience the freedom of Namibia's vast open spaces, but to experience its black rhinos, do not eschew the 8,600 square mile "confines" of Etosha.
I've read and enjoyed some of Rick Bass's previous books, and I was really looking forward to this Vine selection. I have to say, I am a bit disappointed.Bass is as much a philosopher and poet as he is a nature writer, and there are passages in this book that are beautifully written. No surprise there. But the narrative kind of drifts around and never really builds any momentum.Bass goes to Namibia--an awesome, but unforgiving, environment--to seek out black rhinos and the people dedicated to trying to preserve them. Except for the fact that their horns aren't really horns, I knew nothing about rhinos when I opened this book, and I don't know much more now. OK: they're near-sighted, and they easily consume plants that are poisonous to humans. Every fifty pages you come upon those kinds of facts.And just as chimps have Jane Goodall, rhinos have their champions who understand the importance of developing the species profile into that of a "glamour animal," so that people (with money) realize the value of these magnificent animals before they vanish completely.I applaud Mr. Bass for helping that cause.Although Bass does embed some of his personal politics into this narrative. Like, you know all those greedy colonialists who invaded Africa and enslaved/killed millions of people to loot natural resources, then plunged the continent into decades of violent civil war, illiteracy and grinding poverty, and then set the stage for entire villages to be wiped out by AIDS? Bush's fault.Aside from that, Bass is duly impressed by the world that brought forth the rhino.If you LOVE either Rick Bass or rhinos, this is the book for you. But it won't draw you into "rhinoworld" the way John Vaillant's "The Tiger" brought those big cats to life. I don't know if there's a title like that out there, but there should be, because rhinos are truly amazing.This book did make me want to go to Namibia....for about a second. Then I remembered that I am not at all good with travel out in "the bush," as I prefer mid-range hotels near bowling alleys. And THEN I remembered that I live in Chicago, which has black rhinos at both the Lincoln Park AND Brookfield Zoos....so problem solved!!

When you look for that special book that defines the whole genre of what you like, you light up like a christmas tree when you find it.For me, this was my second Paul Bishop Fey Croaker thriller. And I've gotta tell you that this one was even better than the 5-star first one that I reviewed, "Kill Me Again." (If you think I've become a big fan of this author, you're right.) Rarely do you have a cop thriller that completely takes on a life of its own. All the elements of a great read are here. The story is a well laid out and starts quickly in the first few pages and builds in intensity all the way through to the exciting conclusion.Characters in this series are beautifully crafted. You feel as though you know them personally and they get better and better as the story progresses. The likable players become more likable and the bad guys are easier to despise as they go on.I go all the way back to the early days of LA ex-cop Joseph Wambaugh and I remember loving his books. There have been a few authors since then whose work I've enjoyed, but for police thrillers, none have even come close to Paul Bishop's work. I have a copy of the next book in this series ("Tequila Mockingbird") on my Kindle reader and can't wait to get started.Do youself a favor and get one - or more- of these terrific books. If you like great cop books, trust me on this one.
LAPD Detective Fay Croaker uses her interrogation expertise to get a confession from a violent rapist, bringing out tears in the heinous criminal with precise questions and intuitive sympathy. She is pulled away to handle an even more heinous homicide which turns into an serial killer case with many unique twists. Such is a detective’s life. One crime after another and Paul Bishop gives us the inside look at how it’s handled by cops and how the trauma of homicide work bruises the psyches of detectives. The narration of this audiobook is top notch, one of the best I’ve ever heard.
This is one of the few books that I was glued to from the very beginning. The author's knowledge of police procedure is very evident and his experience adds a tremendous insight into the plot. In the end, the descriptive terms were startling but real. In my sheltered life I have never heard of such events, but I'm sure the author has. I'll be back for more Paul Bishop novels. Watch out Joe Wambaugh there is a great writer following in your footsteps. Yes, Joe would also enjoy this one.
When I grab a novel for free, I know that a lot of times I'm getting what I pay for....but I'm usually driven to finish the book.This book pulled me in, sat me down, and didn't let go. Very tightly written. (I'm also used to limited editing in some of these freebies....I can recall one typo, and can't remember if it was in this one or the next that I also ended up buying.)The mystery was plausible, the procedure well done and appears accurate....it was a thoroughly gripping experience.Hopefully the author plans more than I see on the site, or I'm going to be terribly sad to hit the end of the road.
Croaker: Kill Me Again introduced me to the whole series of Fey Croaker books and I can't say I've been disappointed in any of them.Grave Sins starts out heavy and hard, getting into the personal lives of Fey and introducing some new characters that remain throughout the series. The police are as colorful as they are engaging--they come across as real life people each with their own struggles and interesting quirks.I found Grave Sins to be particularly engrossing as the main case becomes extremely personal to Fey. The writing is quick moving and enjoyable, once again carrying me well into the night to finish it (not too long of a book). It's less of a who-done-it and more a race against time to stop a sadistic killer.The book is surprisingly meaningful, taking it beyond the realm of simple enjoyment although it does that exceptionally well. Paul Bishop brings out very real and troubling issues which the rest of us would most likely rather not face or discuss. He beautifully juxtaposes the severe damage done by sexual abuse, showing us two sides of the coin and the power of individual choice (though that was probably not the author's intent)--Fey Croaker, confident detective who constantly strives to overcome her own severe abusive history, and others who let their abuse make them into abusers themselves.Paul Bishop's 30 years of experience working sex crimes gives it the seal of authenticity and a view into the real life of hidden worlds. Grave Sins is not only enjoyable but also intensely gratifying in its ability to open a reader's eyes.Do yourself a favor and pick it up. Just remember...this is as real as it gets.
Paul Bishop is fast becoming my favorite author. This is the third book I have read of his recently, and as with the other two I was captivated till the last page. It is obvious that he has a true honest feel as for what it is like to be a police officer. He is not an author where the reader can skip any pages because they are unimportant to the story, each page holds you in its grip till the very end. And now I just downloaded his book Deep Water which I will begin in a few minutes, and looking forward to this new adventure. Might be helpful to read his other book "Croaker: kill me again" before reading this to get a real feel for the main character.

I like the characters and the action.I would have given this book five stars if the editing and especially the grammar checking had been better. There are many examples of the wrong word being used, most notably to me lightening instead of lightning.

He published a book dealing with philosophy and religion in 2004, entitled Finding the Glory. How Good is Good Enough for God is his second book unlocking secrets of the seven churches of Revelation. His is married with 5 children and 13 grandchildren, living in Temescal Canyon, California.

My son loves this book
This isn't our first my 1st Board Book and it definitely won't be our last. The books are sturdy and can withstand my enthusiastically and unintentionally rough two year old as he throws them around and bends them every which way. The pictures are bright and engaging so it gets my toddler asking questions about new things and excitedly pointing out the things that he knows/recognizes. Every letter has a handful of different pictures to talk about and we can discuss the letter sounds and what they look like.
My 1 yr old son and I really enjoy spending quality potty time reading this book. Yes, this is one of the things I use with him when I want him to concentrate and sit still on the potty and it works. He's learning his abc's and potty training at the same time :DHe loves to point at the different images and I name it for him. The whole book is clear and concise so it makes teaching the letters and sound of the alphabet easy.
My toddler (23 months) currently loves books with lots of photos of objects and animals for him to learn the words for, so I thought he'd love this book since it has more than one picture for each letter of the alphabet. However, this book almost has too many pictures and is overwhelming for some kids -- the letter B has 14 pictures on a two-page spread! My son usually just looks at the first few pages, points out the objects he recognizes and says the word, then loses interest long before we reach the end. I think this book would be better if there were only 2-3 pictures per letter. (Some less common letters, like Q and Z, do only have 2-3 pictures.)
BUY IT. Trust me. I have a library of over 200 children's books for my son, age 2. I was stunned at what an excellent item this is when we received it! He is only two but he knows his letters, so I thought the ABC board book would be a good fit for him. I had no idea! It was neat that he'd learned his letters already, but now I can ask him, "James, what letter does "airplane" start with?" and get the right answer. He knows DOZENS of these, thanks to this book!We love a great read and that is how we enjoy one another's company much of the day. This isn't a "Mommy, read it!" book. It's an "I'll let you sit on my lap and I'll hold the book so you can build your brain while I rest book." I love a book that I DON'T have to read just as much as one I do have to read. :) My son sits calmly on my lap, picking through the pages and pointing to realistic pictures of items, while telling me what each one is called. It's excellent for vocabulary building. It helps him build confidence in his ability to "read." And it has shown him that letters(shown on the pages for the words shown that begin with them,) MEAN something.This is one of those books that I think everyone should have. It will be part of my future baby gifts from here on out. (I like to give books because no one else does and they are the single best building block to education that I can provide to the child, as someone outside the home. Plus, they last forever compared to baby clothes!)I really encourage you to add this item to your home library. Your child will benefit from it immensely and you will both enjoy "reading" it. ;)
My 15 month old LOVES this book. The whole "my first" series has been a hit, but My First ABC takes the cake! He can already point out about a third of the photos when I ask him, and loves pointing at the photos to hear the words that he doesn't know yet. He gets so excited to show us the aaaypay (airplane) and ball, and brings this book to anyone who will read it with him.
I like the "My First" books by DK publishing for my daughter (age 1-2yrs). We have several of the tabbed board books. I knew that this book was smaller and not tabbed; however, it is an older edition, which I didn't notice before I ordered. The book is still cute, but some of the styles or pictures are dated-looking. Nothing is inaccurate, just something to know if you're used to the style of the bright, current-decade books.
My 2-year-old son's favorite book right now is "My First Number Board Book" by this same publisher, so I bought this one for him recently because he is interested in the alphabet, too. He loves it just as much as the number book! It is full of bright pictures, many of which are things that he already recognized so was delighted to be able to name them himself.
This book is awesome! We had to get another because his first 100 words book is starting come apart. He has always loved his books and the photos and letters in this book are more realistic so when we go outside or play around the house he points and tries to say the words. Can't quite say umbrella but he covers his head and says raaaain! lol.

What a treasure trove! I love the set up of this book. It starts from the very beginning- with the parts of a guitar. The format of the lessons mixes theory with technique and practice. Mr. Ferrante covers some of the most famous guitar riffs so I can really feel like a rocker as I learn to play guitar.The videos make learning from a book so easy! It's the next best thing to having your own personal teacher. Mr. Ferrante speaks clearly. He is personable and makes me feel like learning to play the guitar is within my reach. The demonstrations of the fingers are clear and concise. This book is a true bargain!
This course is an amazing value to take a student from the very basics in rock guitar through at least two or three years of instruction. I simply cannot believe how much material is included. The videos are extremely helpful, especially with young learners. My 12 year old son already knows how to read music somewhat, BUT this course is helping him in areas where he struggled. My 10 year old step-daughter is ecstatic that this is available for her to use now. She had been using YouTube videos and printed materials that confused her.There are videos throughout the entire ebook, located on the exact page where they are applicable. No searching, no loading CDs. Perfect for teens! The videos help with everything from holding the pick to helping train the ear to different chords.I think this is a great course for dedicated older children and adults. My 10 year old is very dedicated and has a high reading level so this program is perfect for her age and above. I previewed their other course geared for younger children and I can't wait to try that one with my other daughter.Damon is so personable and friendly. He is extremely talented and an excellent teacher. It isn't easy to find both of these qualities in an instructor. His videos are easy to follow and extremely clear. I'm so happy I found this program for my children. Where in the world can you get such a value for three years of music instruction for your children? I love it! I shared it with everyone I know.** Just a tip: The videos were taking a while to spool in HD quality. When I switched to standard video, the quality was just as great and the videos never hesitated again.

I found this book very easy to follow and I love the instructional videos, it really helps you practice what is being taught. It is a unique learning experience that allows people who learn differently (whether visual or auditory) to grasp the techniques. I really enjoyed learning the basics of the guitar all the way up to playing music with skilled expertise. This is an enjoyable learning opportunity for all levels.Damon is an awesome instructor who explains various areas thoroughly. One of the things I enjoyed most were the visual area of color explosions which give students the ability to strum along and practice what you have just been taught. You cannot go wrong learning how to rock with this instructional book! The easy one click video instruction really adds to this unique learning experience.

Then it goes on to teach you major chords and intervals. This book is an excellent tool and guide for learning the guitar. Somebody who has never once touched a guitar can have knowledge within minutes of reading this book.I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about starting to learn the guitar.

I was a bit surprised by the negative reviews. I've been feeding a family 40 years. But I never quite got into completely "home made" because convenience foods were so easy. (We have 21 children, 2 foster adults)The stories are cute, but most of my at home kids have special needs, so they trust me on the foods I make! :o) My (non special needs) teens 13,13,14 and 16 are excited because after all these years Alana's book has convinced me that I can can! We are now searching gor an electric pressure canner.I find Alana's suggestions, ideas, and tons of encouragement just what I needed to get going on completely homemade at our house. We are basically a gluten free, sweetener free family but the recipes are adaptable using cup for cup from King Arthur.Thanks Alana!!
This book is ok. I should have really trusted the other reviews. I usually tend to give the benefit of the doubt when others criticize, but they're right - it's not that good of a book. The recipes are good, but they are so basic. If you are just learning to cook this book would be great for you, but if you've been doing it your whole life it's going to bore you - TRUST ME! I wish I would have listened the others. I thought this book was more "home-made pantry" type items - like it says - but personally I consider only about half of it pantry stuff.... it has a recipe for lasagna - which to me doesn't fall under "pantry" ..... The recipes themselves are great, the pictures are great, it's just much more of a beginners book.
I like to read some of a book before I buy it and cookbooks are no different. I first read the sample available on Amazon and then found my library had an ebook version of it I could borrow. I actually am reading the book like a novel and I am enjoying it so much. I got to the chapter on frozen foods and I went to the Amazon Kindle store and purchased the book, returned the library copy. I always read reviews prior to most any purchase and reviews of books are helpful but I always take 1 star reviews and 5 star reviews with a dose of scepticism. Sometimes people give 1 or 5 stars out of laziness, I liked it, 5 stars, or I didn't like it, 1 star. For me, a 3 or 4 star review of a book is good and solid but I chose to give this one a 5 star review because of some of the 1 star reviews I saw. I thought some of the 1 star reviews were mean and petty! I want to judge the book on the usefulness of it and if you truly did not find it useful, OK, give it 1 star but to give 1 star based on a swear word or 2? You can't watch TV or a movie or read almost any fiction book that doesn't contain profanity these days. It has made its way into every day causal conversation and I can't believe the people who said they were offended by the mild use of a few swear words. I can see marking it down for a mistake in a recipe (like the one where it called for tablespoons of salt rather than teaspoons) but some mistakes are not going to be caught by the spell checker and if the proof reader was not also making the recipes, they probably would not have caught it. I really like the book, I am excited to try my hand at making mozzarella. In fact, I am going to make the pasta, into ravioli, make the ricotta, the mozzarella, the sauce from scratch, and the bread to go with the meal. I have made ricotta before, and paneer (fresh Indian cheese), I make bread all the time, I have made pasta once many years ago, and I used to make pasta sauce from fresh tomatoes when I was younger so some will be new and some will be just going back to the way I used to cook when my kids were little and I had more time. I can't wait to make some of the snacks and crackers with my granddaughters! I very much enjoy the book and am excited to try the recipes. I am a vegetarian so some of the recipes I will have to adapt to fit my needs but I have a granddaughter with allergies to artificial food coloring and being able to make some snacks she couldn't otherwise have is a huge plus for me.
I was excited to get this book since I love baking my own bread and generally long for a more simple and natural life. However, these recipes require equipment and complex processes as well as expensive ingredients like unpasteurized dairy so unless you have a milk cow in your backyard your time and money will be better spent just purchasing 98% of these pantry items. Because I feel like most of the recipes are not worth attempting, I feel like the book is largely useless for me anyway.
For someone looking to eat closer to home with fewer preservatives and less GMOs, this is a great base recipe book (and delicious, too). I love this cookbook more than my own children. Okay, maybe not quite, but I do love it a lot. I've made almost all the recipes, and they're ALL wonderful. I tend to skip over the author's personal notes about her family, but I do enjoy reading about "tense moments" within a recipe when she reassures the reader at the moment one might think "is this going to work?" For instance, yogurt or mayonnaise. I admit I thought something horrible was happening, but it worked! So many of the recipes incorporated into other meals I create make it so incredible. Her pie crust recipe is to die for: I used it in addition to my grandmother's rhubarb strawberry pie filling. The chai is outstanding (and so easy and fresh). No partially hydrogenated oils for me!
