From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-A former Navy SEAL describes his journey from aiding victims of violence to protecting people and, now, living a life of service. Modeling parts of his engaging memoir on the "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories he loved as a child, Greitens describes events along his path, preceding each with a short "You" segment presenting a moral dilemma taken from his own life. As a college student he began seeing the results of violence in the world with summers in China, Bosnia, and Rwanda. At home, he trained as a boxer to build his strength. After graduation he worked with Bolivian street children. At this point, halfway through the narrative, there is a series of black-and-white photographs. After a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford, realizing that "courage and compassion are two sides of the same coin," and determined to become someone who protected those in need, he joined the Navy SEALS. That difficult training takes up most of the second half of the book, which concludes with a few scenes from his service in Iraq; a description of The Mission Continues, his nonprofit organization; and an exhortation to readers to live lives of service as well. Review
"In a young-adult marketplace crowded with fictional tales for and about teen women, it's a relief to discover a book that reaches through the miasma of video games and sports biographies into the minds and hearts of young men, especially one that is so well executed. An autobiography that seeks to lead by example, "The Warrior's Heart" largely fulfills its mission with a story that's as relatable as it is inspiring." - Los Angeles Times "It's no small feat to make a difference in somebody's life, and Greitens has written a book that is a fitting honor to all the people who made a difference in his. By sharing these stories with young readers, he now has a chance to make a difference in a few more."- The New York Times "An uncommon (to say the least) coming of age, retraced with well-deserved pride but not self-aggrandizement, and as thought provoking as it is entertaining."--Kirkus, starred review"Adapted from the adult title The Heart and the Fist (Houghton, 2011), this volume has been rearranged, shortened, and streamlined in way sure to appeal to its new audience."--School Library Journal

The author Eric Greitens was a Rhodes Scholar who studied at Oxford, who also went on many global treks where he worked with the poorest of the poor around the world. From war-torn Rwanda to the incredible poverty of orphans in Bolivia. He saw where help was needed and realized that these people needed more than food and shelter...they needed someone to stop the genocide. So he became the best of the best--a Navy SEAL.Eric is modest..just tells his story with love, empathy, and incredible compassion. These are NOT the three adjectives when you first think of our fighting forces. He brings humanity to the world that most of us dismiss...We hear that 8 MILLION people were killed in the Congo genocide--tribe vs tribe, then just move on to the next story that catches our eye.THEN Eric returns from active duty overseas and finds that our vets are being “thrown awayâ€, discarded by the USA and Veterans Affairs. (To be fair now that CEO Robert A. McDonald is the new secretary of the VA, we are seeing great improvements.) Many vets committing suicide, many homeless or unemployed. What do you do with the skills you learned fighting in Fallujah? Where you faced constant death from an enemy from many different sides. The Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Boka Harum, and ISIS much less the enemy hidden in the craggy mountains of Afghanistan or in crumbling buildings and desert of Iraq. Unwinnable wars. And Eric decides to DO something. He created “The Mission Continues.†A support group AND a trust to help these returning vets NOT with charity but teaching them skills to learn to be someone else than a soldier, marine, airman or sailor. and not just skills, but a brotherhood and sisterhood where Vets could relate. Because only a returning vet truly understands what war does to your mind, spirit and mind. Eric now has three books. Read them all. Then help our returning vets. A “Thank you for your service†does nothing to help our vets return to society. This is a GREAT book!
Good book but I am more disappointed about the author since he has been in the news about his sexual accusations.
This is a young adult version of "The Heart and the Fist". Not much new for me since I had previously read "The Heart and the Fist". I bought this book to give to my 15-year-old grandson, so it's very appropriate for that. If you are an adult, I would recommend "The Heart and the Fist", by Eric Greitens (same author) instead of this book.
Given that Greiten's work is a scaled down version of his earlier " The Heart And The Fist " the author does a wonderful job of melding his divergent experiences together while, at the same time, presents clear and not to be forgotten lessons for young readers. A must read when one considers mental toughness and living a life of purpose.
After hearing Eric Greitens speak at a university commencement earlier this year, I was eager to read The Warrior's Heart: Becoming a Man of Courage and Compassion, an adaptation of his book The Heart and the Fist. Mr. Greitens is an engaging speaker - someone whose words challenge, uplift and inspire. He is refreshing, sincere and really quite remarkable. I worried that his book would not come close to the "real life" version of his message, but I was wrong. The Warrior's Heart is a thoroughly captivating narrative of Mr. Greitens' journey to become "a man of compassion and courage." It is a quick read, pulling readers in by putting them into various "what would you do?" scenarios. Woven throughout the book are examples of civic engagement as well as character lessons. Integrity, duty, service, perseverance, kindness, commitment, and yes, courage and compassion, are illustrated in Mr. Greitens' experiences from China to Croatia, Bosnia to Bolivia and eventually in his Navy SEAL training. The message never comes across as preachy, only illuminating and enlightening. This book is action-packed, yet poignant and thought-provoking.Mr. Greitens asks readers to "be more than just good, and better than just strong" by doing more than just "living for ourselves." I enjoyed this book and its message immensely. As a community leader charged with promoting civic and character education in our schools, I am excited about sharing this book with educators and students throughout my state. It has the power to motivate and inspire young people to become men and women who make a difference - people of compassion and courage.
My son is over forty. I sent him this for Christmas, writing only that "some of this is not for you" so he would get that I did not consider him a teen.Eric Greitens might write in short chapters, even as Dan Brown did in "The Vinci Code." But what he tells and how he tells it of personal enounters with real hard challenges, most ones he has chosen for growth, rivets a reader. This is a brief review and if it is to serve anyone, it has to help someone decide if this is his cup of tea. Don't buy this book if you cannot be inspired when you are too old to even dream of becoming a Navy Seal. I was a conscientious objector when Vietnam was raging. Eric Greitens is a conscientious and compassionate warrior way far along a path as humanitarian. I nominate him for a Nobel Prize for Peace.
This book reads like a primer on how to "grow up" and do something significant no matter how big or small the "what gets done" is. Mr Greitens has done well in describing the multitude of problems which need work and provides sources to be involved. He put his life on the line, no small feat. In the end, we are all brothers and sisters - we need each other and this book shows how first steps can be taken whether as a SEAL or as a volunteer to put our lives on the line for others. Great read.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. I think this book is a very interesting story of what a person can do if he or she really puts in the effort.I also think the story is good for all people not just the young. I am in my sixties and I have been showing service for most of my life. It is rewarding helping others to be as successful as they can be.

What a sweet, sorta second chance story. Dorothy and Ryan grew up together as really good friends.Circumstances parted them. Now there back and maybe, just maybe things will work to their advantage. Two different people, two different lives, pulled in two different directions.Where will each end up and how will they eachcontinue to live the lives each has made for themselves. With a lot obstacles and surprises, you need to read the book to find out.I was disappointed at the end at first, but then it made sense. You will see.I would definitely recommend this book, hands down.
Love's Sweet Cadence beautifully explores the depths of the human spirit that overcomes adversity and achieves peace and love that brings happiness to Dorothy and Ryan as they pursue God's plan for their lives . Riveria exquisitely describes their passion for music and for each other.
An enjoyable story of second chances in a small town. I love Dorothy’s character, weakness and strength. As usual, J. Riviera’s writing is a pleasure to read.
A Love Song to Cherish is an enjoyable sweet Christian Contemporary romance with a great second chance at love theme. No one knew, ten years apart, returning to a small town, music and being asked to render musical gifts at a wedding would gift Ryan and Dorothy with so much. Although they may appear to have it going on in the eyes of others, they could not fool each other. They knew it was more going on behind the smoke screen. Dorothy on a quest to fulfill her new-found purpose and continue recovering as an addict and Ryan on the quest to ask the hard questions and find purpose may very well find what they need in the small town of Cherish.Throughout their quest, the one constant is their love for music and the craft. Its undeniable presence brought their connection to light in a way they both could not deny. Although ten years was a long time ago, the music and small-town memories and true friendship made the time apart seem like yesterday. A few trips around town and a few sweet kisses brought it all back; their friendship and love that in their teenage years neither dared to explore.Josie Riviera did a fantastic job showing the vulnerability of both Ryan and Dorothy and the trust they both shared in their friendship. Faith, family, and friendship ruled supreme in helping them both find their true purpose, way back to God and true love. Even though they had plans of their own regarding who they were and their mapped-out success, they found that God had the perfect plan for them both. I really enjoyed reading Ryan and Dorothy’s story; I got such a down-home feeling. This is a great inspirational love story that you will find enjoyable from the beginning to the end. Although a quick read, you will not be disappointed. I was left smiling at the end.I look forward to the next book in the Cherish series.
A Love Song to Cherish by Josie RivieraStarts out with Dorothy and she had not wanted to come back home ever again. Nothing worked out-her boyfriend found another and she was once alone again. She is in withdrawal from opiods and the symptoms could last a few years...She's heavily into music, especially at churches. Health issues kept her from playing her musical instruemnt. She's only back in her hometown for her brother...his wedding to Alice and they wanted her to play. Ryan (a nerd) will be the singer...she'd not seen him for years when she left to find fame and fortune.Ryan is accomplished worldwide. He's not found a reason to go back to church but recalls the feeling it left him with. What I like about his book are the unpredictable scenes, caring and such inspirational support. Love how their secrets came out with no judgment.Note from the author, recipe and other works from the author and about the author are highlighted at the end and acknowledgements.Excerpt from A Christmas to Cherish is also included.Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
Love’s Sweet Cadence is a beautiful Christian Romance. Two close high school friends return home to Sweet Grove, Texas to provide the music for the wedding of Dorothy Thompson’s brother. Dorothy, who is to be the vocalist’s accompanist, comes home with fears of failure as her dreams of being a concert pianist have fallen apart. She does not know that her old friend Ryan Edwards, now a successful opera star, has come to sing at the wedding.Where will the renewal of their friendship take them? Have their lives diverged so much that they can never be more than friends? Can bringing Ryan back to his faith help bring them together? You must read the book to find out what obstacles they need to overcome if they want this reunion to be more than just a short rekindling of their old friendship. The primary characters are well developed and very real. The story flows smoothly and I love the way the story ends. Although this is a stand-alone novella, I can see the potential for a follow up book. (Josie Riviera, if you are reading this, consider that a not so subtle hint).I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. However, this review is voluntary, and any opinion here is entirely my own.

Textbook for nursing school. Being a non-traditional student, I am not a fan of attending lectures, but instead prefer to read a textbook on my own time. This book served its purpose and helped me to pass my OB class with an A. Easy to read and covered all the topics in OB and Women's Health fully. It had plenty of pictures to help with explain some of the more difficult to visualize topics and went into enough detail so that you feel like you have a firm grasp on the material. Good coverage of nursing topics, nursing diagnoses, and things of the like that you will need for NCLEX.
This ia one of the worst transactions that I have ever done with amazon. How can you present information of a new book for rent and then rent out a book that every single line in the book is highlighted such that it makes it even difficult to read? This book was rented out for 35 dollars with the clain that it was a new one and the current edition in the market. Please the rental for this book needs to be reconsidered.Am so dissapointed becuase it makes things very boring.
This book will tell you everything you need to know about maternal and newborn nursing. It covers general women's health to conception all the way to newborn nursing care. Even if you're not a nursing student, and just a pregnant mom that wants information, you'll get unbiased facts right here.
Got the e-book version and it’s not letting me download in my amazon kindle app. I don’t have it downloaded anywhere else. I have been using e-textbooks from kindle before and I’ve never had this problem.
I actually really liked this textbook. As a student, it was simple enough to read; but still went into the pathophysiology of everything pretty well.
Mostly every page in this book is highlighted, this provides me no room to study or take my own notes. It’s very confusing to read someone else highlighted notes. I am very upset
just what my daughter needed for class
I would just like to note that the textbook rental I recieved had highlighting and notes written throught the textbook. There has also been soft wear and tear around the edges and cover of the book. Other than these slight issues the book overall has been great.

Amazon.com Review
Two by Two is a whirlwind tour of the Los Angeles dancing scene by Eve Babitz, who has made a career of delineating the social comedies of L.A. Here, in a series of loosely connected chapters, she talks with instructors of various forms of social dance--including tango, salsa, country two-step, and both East and West Coast swing--about why dancing has become so popular again, even with all the difficulties of learning the steps. The story does not so much progress in a linear direction as it orbits around a shifting core, propelled by the occasionally sparkling dialogue. Apart from a sharply unexpected dose of reality in the book's epilogue, Two by Two occupies a pleasantly hazy daydream that, while it may or may not inspire you to hit the dance floor, reveals the charms that Babitz and her friends have found there.

From Publishers Weekly
In each chapter of this erratic look at the Los Angeles dance scene, Babitz (Black Swans) focuses on a different style of dance, with most of the text consisting of interviews with dance teachers. Predictably, the atmosphere of each dance space varies greatly. Paul McClure teaches two-step and insists that his studio, In Cahoots, is "just like the Cheers bar, everybody knows your name"; the salsa scene is, as Babitz describes it, "grisly" and far less friendly. The Stevens sisters, who run Pasadena Ballroom Dance, brag that their lessons have been the source of more than 450 marriages. Throughout, Babitz insists that dancing is flirty fun (as well as a good way to stay trim). Many of her observations are annoyingly flippant, such as her bizarre take on gender politics (male-female relations today are "ridiculous," she statesArather than sending for mail-order brides, American men just need to learn to dance). In a straightforward epilogue, Babitz tells of an accident she had while lighting a cigar that led to six weeks in the intensive care unit being treated for third-degree burns, then casually admits that, since her accident put her out of commission for a year, the information here may be out-of-date. While the book may waver past the radar of the uninitiated, those immersed in the ballroom world will identify with Babitz's obsession with dance. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The book is about the dance scene in Los Angeles in the 90s. Babitz took dance lessons, went dancing, interviewed dancers and instructors, and made friends among them. There is commentary interspersed with dialog. The book reads easily and in the Epilogue, written some time after the main text because she was seriously burned and spent time recovering, contains a brief update on the dance scene (which rapidly changes, with clubs coming and going, fads coming and going, dancers coming and going, including some dying). The chapters are based on specific dances: fox-trot, two-step, tango, cajun and fais-dodo, ballroom, salsa, and both east coast and west coast swing. At first blush the book seems a break from her previous works. They were fiction (although pretty autobiographical) and based primarily in the 60s, with some tales from her parents generation back into the 30s, when Holllywood was Hollywood. There was a grace and an ambiance which she presents. And there were certain people who were graced and who helped make that ambiance. In many ways that period passed in the 70s, when she wrote to fiction pieces. There is a nostalgia about them. TWO BY TWO also harkens back to that time, to Fred and Ginger, to when there still were social graces, where flirting was an art form. The dance scene has elements of this and TWO BY TWO traces this out, but in a New Journalism fashion. And the book is a paen to dancing, because it is fun and good for you. I recommend this book
I became interested in Eve Babitz after reading the March 2014 Vanity Fair article about her youth. She sounded fascinating and I vaguely remember her as writing articles for the L.A. Times magazine or similar publications in the 80s. This was one of the only two books by her I could find. It was highly disappointing. Reads as if she transcribed her phone conversations with a friend. The overall effect is like listening to your aunt talk to a friend of hers about a bunch of their other friends doing something that you have no interest in. I can't imagine this being of interest to anyone who does not take dance lessons. The blurb tried to promote it as having "celebrity gossip," but aside from one line about Madonna taking tango lessons from Joe Shmoe or whatever, I didn't see any. Gave up after skimming 1/4 of the book. Big yawn!
