Is this a good book? Yes! But is it a great disappointment? Definetely YES!!!Sophia Institute Press "brings back into print books that have long been out of print." Great. They also usually abridge those books, make editorial revisions, etc. This book is another example of their taking an absolutely wonderful book and redoing so that it loses much of its appeal. Readers who have no access to the origianl find it wonderful and helpful but if they could read the original book they would be as disapointed as I am. Actually, I have never been satisfied with ANY of their reprints and usually refuse to buy any of their books.The original book "Kindness" by Fr. Lawrence Lovasik published in 1962 is 334 pages versus 246, and has 33 chapters divided into 8 parts versus 17 chapters in 3 parts. Fr. Lovasik stated "Words move, but examples draw in our contact with people in daily life... Examples taken from daily life are apt to infulence the reader more than a treatise on the virtue of kindness." The original book "Kindness" contained a multitude of interesting examples taken from his book "Treasury of Catechism Stories." There seem to be none of his examples in this reprint. Also, the original used Scripture quotes from the translation of Fathers Lilly and Kleist. The reprint uses quotes based on the Catholic Edition of the Revised Standart Version. WHY????? I knew when I ordered it that is was an abridged edition and contained editorial revisions but this is ridiculous.The original is out of print and rare so copies are expensive when you can find them. I have an original but wanted to buy extra copies as gifts and to put in our Church Adoration Chapel. I am sure it will be helpful but it would have been so nice if Sophia Institute would have just reprinted the entire book. If you can find the original - buy it instead of this one. So much important information is missing as to make it seem like an entirely different book.If I was putting what I learned from the book into practice, I would have probably only said "kind" things about this reprint but I am not perfect yet and this really irritates me when they do this to a wonderful book.
This book is a gem for the spiritual life. It was recommended by my spiritual director when I was in a real self pity slump. The Lord spoke to my heart through this book in a way that gave me a totally different outlook. Years later I ordered it for a friend who was suffering injustices and having trouble seeing the light. She later told me that she spent a day praising God for the author and everyone who had anything to do with this book coming to her. I must admit that I was rather turned off by the title because it sounds like just another "self help" book, instead of the very orthodox Catholic spiritual guide that it is.
Humankind is so gosh darn communal! We must interact with people all the time. Our greatest joys and our greatest hurts often come from the actions or words of others. Some folks are a joy to be around, and some folks are a strain for even short spells. Mix in the sinful nature of mankind and you get one big social mess. Christ is the answer of course, but how do we:1. Navigate the infinite twists and turns of motives, emotions, deeds, words, joys, hurts, gossip, detraction, malice, courtesies, judgments, etc. in others? and2. Know if our own social motives, behavior, and words are in accordance with God’s will?Father Lovasik provides the answer in this practical guide to kindness. Don’t let the title fool you, this book covers the whole sandbox of human virtues and vices regarding human interaction. After reading this book, you will know how to deal with social dysfunction in others and you will be enlightened with your own social flaws / remedies. Every positive concept is defined, examined, illustrated with examples, and bolstered with solid scripture, theology and common sense, while every negative concept is defined, examined, illustrated with examples, and remedied using scripture, theology and common sense. This book is denominationally neutral, so all Christians should glean much from this fine work. Get your highlighter because it is full of treasured quotes. Now I know why Patrick Coffin has this book on his top 16 Christian books of all time. It is truly one of the best books I have ever read.

hi i received this bundle in 2 days with free shipping, and the cost is much cheaper than in college bookstore, my college is selling it for $170.00 and i saved a lot on amazon, i am making others life easier by giving this review. it contains everything that you need, a registration code, an essel to hold your book, a small manual to accompany which i feel not necessary, and the main book of document processing.. its all in one big box.. though amazon dont give any such description and so its difficult to understand what you are ordering. i feel the other students before ordering just order a book and you can buy the code online on the gdp site.. well it both makes the same cost.. amazon saved my money..thank you so much amazon
I was very skeptical about buying this because I could not get a clear answer as to if it came with an access code and if it even worked if it did come with one. It came in a box with the cover looking like the picture. It contained a hard cover spiral text book, a student word manual, a cardboard easel and the registration card with access code (which worked). I would recommend to buy if your looking for a cheaper buy than the college bookstore.
Ordered this because it included access code per item description. But when the book came, access code did not work. On calling the publisher, they informed the code has already been used. I had to buy access code separately paying for a full book
It came with the GDP activation code and all the books I needed for my college course.
This is a great item for class. It has the large teaching book with a smaller "reference" book (gives examples of proper document formatting & abbreviations). My only complaint is the "easel" that is included: it's cardboard, had a 1/2" base/"edge" to rest a 3" book! I ended up buying a different easel (metal, with a larger base) just to hold the book in place because the cardboard one was not big enough for the book.
I'm very pleased with this purchase. I wasn't sure if the kit had the access code, so I chatted with an Amazon representative who checked on it for me and said that it did. This was a great deal because Amazon allowed me to pay for the item over a 6-month period with no interest.
This is the worst. I ordered this book in new status and it was not new. New is meaning ALL things are included. Such as access key and so on. So now this has put me behind as far as finding the correct material for my class which starts Monday and no one has the book. Thank you very much.
Works just what I needed it for, a college textbook. My complaints with it is the easel is completely worthless, some of the pages are printed off-center (luckily I can still at least read what I need to), and there are little pieces of paper that come off every time i turn a page. I think they didn't do a good job when they cut out the holes for the spiral binding.
