This was a tough one to get through, just because I loved welcome to paradise so much. Chas has a very humorous prose and tends to use self awareness to take it to absurdity. I wanted to like this book so much more but the connections just felt so forced. Again, the lack of names to stories makes it difficult to paint a picture and satisfy baseline curiosity and so I found it so tough to really get into this one. It’s tough to throw out criticism like this towards an author I do get a lot of joy out of reading but this one just didn’t resonate with me, but to each their own.
But Chas barks up my tree and his general viewpoint is akin to mine... so I would have read this book even if it sucked, which it might have? Love the perspective of surfing through a very informed S. Cal cool industry intertwined surfer guy. While talking about how the surf industry protects surfers from openly reveling in their cocaine based antics Chas does still omit names and do the same...I suppose to protect himself. Cocaine + Surfing is definitely not a tell all, but it wants to be.
Did not like the fact that he protected the names of many of the people involved in his musings, and seemed to have tunnel vision in searching for his title connection.
Easy read, providing insight into an avenue of surfing. I bet Rory Parker actually liked it. Why are 4 more words required?
I have never surfed but enjoyed this book. This is a much better book than Girl on the Train.
Great book. Very entertaining. Chas is a talent. He took up a challenging topic and wrote a thought provoking book (not to mention very funny) Hopefully this gets the conversation started. Well done.

Salem Hyde is a new character on the young reader scene, and this book has wonderful characters, a fun, dramatic problem and a great lesson to be learned. The interactions between Salem and his new "counsel" are hilarious. My kids really enjoyed reading this book, right after I finished it myself!
We love reading this as a family. My kinder and 4th grade sons are always entertained.
Salem is a witch and she needs help with spelling and spell casting she entered a spelling bee she thought it was a spell casting contest she found out it was spelling and she couldn't back out she cast a spell that made misspelled words appear in the real life form she hurried to fix her mistakes with glue before the principal saw and she did
Very enjoyable. It's not often you see a graphic novel that's so focused on situational humor, but here it is. Will look for more "Salem Hyde" books in the series.

Very fun (and very clever!) graphic novel for kids who are chapter book-aged, but love things to be a bit more visual.
It's funny, and punny, I think I liked it better than the recipient did. I'm still reading it (it was a Christmas present for someone in the same household).

Author Will Jelbert summarizes in his first chapter, “The Happiness Animal will tell you everything useful about how to be happy.†I would agree that the book handily does just that.It begins with the premise that no matter the individual characteristics or circumstances of a person, the same basic components of happiness exist for all people. We follow the mythical examples of Ko, Doug, Rolf, and others, throughout their endeavors and failures, while examining the reasons behind them. While I didn’t find all of the examples to be personally relatable, I do believe the book’s examples are broad and varied enough that everyone would glean something valuable from them.Mr. Jelbert draws much of his own inspiration from classic authors such as Seneca (circa 4 B.C., quotes from whom are sprinkled liberally throughout the book), as well as from lessons learned during his own difficult journey. I appreciate that he has come by his own advice honestly, and shares some of his experiences with the reader.The Happiness Animal emphasizes the pursuit of complete sincerity, kindness, tolerance, awareness, courage, warmth, respect, listening, generosity... the list goes on… as keys to building greater happiness. Rather than just leave the reader with lofty character goals or empty platitudes, the author gives practical advice and exercises to help build the reader’s knowledge and skill set in these areas. I found the exercises to be genuinely helpful and thought-provoking.I believe the subject matter of this book is universally-applicable (who doesn’t want to be happier?), and found this to be an interesting read. The book could use another round of proofreading to clean up some of the punctuation and sentence structure issues, but I had no trouble understanding the author’s communicated points. His tone is conversational and friendly, more akin to a coffee shop conversation with a good friend than an hour spent with a paid therapist. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to become a more positive, healthy-minded person with improved relationships.
Things won't make you happy just as pills won't make you thin. You are what you eat and you are what you think. Your decisions and behaviors govern the end result of how you look and feel. Jelbert takes this philosophy one step further by showing the reader how to exercise through first understanding thinking links how they are controlled by attraction and association to preexisting links. Once this relationship is understood, demoralizing thinking links can be recognized and broken. Next, we look at exercising the ability to be honest. Sincere honesty is the most critical concept of the Happiness Animal. Without it, the rest of the exercises won't have much value. Once we can be honest, we will have harmony within and this leads to integrity and trust. Then, Jelbert has the reader understand and exercise kindness. Being kind to others and being kind to ourselves is the same thing and is necessary in the journey towards true happiness through empathy and compassion. Thirdly, there is tolerance. There are five types of tolerance that can be exercised and need to be exercised as tolerance is often the weakest of the Happiness muscles. There is tolerance towards fear, pain, others, events, and self. Next is awareness. Through awareness, exercising this muscle ensures the health of your physical body and using moderation allows for increased awareness and intuition. Lastly, there is courage that needs to be exercised. Courage is the acceptance of fear and conscientiously following one's intuition. Once a person becomes adept at exercising these 'muscles', the path to true happiness can be realized.
This is a very challenging review to write. I’m actually learning quite a bit from Will Jelbert’s book “The Happiness Animal.†The author seems to truly know his stuff, and has suffered through a miserable set of circumstances that has allowed him to experience (and know) true happiness. His mission in writing this book is to share the secret of being happy with the readers.The first part of the book is a good deal of exposition on what happiness is not. Jelbert provides examples and definitions of what does not make people happy, and wants the readers to squelch those misconceptions.What’s very impressive is Jelbert’s research. He has gone to great lengths to study his topic, and he begins each chapter with a quote from the ancient scholar Seneca, his apparent muse. I enjoyed reading the philosopher’s words, then seeing how the author would expound upon them.It isn’t until chapter 4 that we are given what Jelbert defines as the “happiness muscles.†It and the subsequent chapters each focus on a muscle and sub-muscles. Here’s the real “meat and potatoes†that the readers are longing for. I couldn’t help but feel the first three chapters were a bit heavy-handed on the dogma and diatribe, when what we really need to get to are the “muscles†and how to exercise them. Granted, it’s good to have the background, but I think Jelbert went a bit overboard on exposition. Chapters 4 onward are exactly what the doctor ordered!As much as the book is very soundly written, I have to challenge the editor or proofreader(s) for missing, the over use of, commas, that tend to, add dramatic pauses, much like, Captain Kirk was speaking, the dialogue. Take this sentence for example from page 30: “What you think will make you happy, is not the same as what will make you happy.†Why is there, a comma in there, then? Just for, the fun of, using, commas? It’s pretty rife, thoughout the book, and it’s a bit, jarring, to constantly see commas, wherever they’re randomly, placed. Gah. Despite that, the book is otherwise very well written, and it’s refreshing to see someone correctly use em-dashes.With the exercises the author provides, and the examples that we can relate with (or sometimes not), Jelbert gives us a workbook to help readers figure out what makes us happy, and how to embrace the happiness animals inside us. Get this book if you’re unhappy, or need some help getting back on the right track. Maybe skip the first three chapters though. And, if you can, overlook, the, proliferation, of, commas.

There should be 4 books in your shelf: Damages, Rules of the Road, Polarizing the Case and Reptile. Rules is a must no matter what type of personal injury case you are taking to trial. I also recommending reading Jim Perdue's books.

This is an excellent book. It focuses the attorney on the very essentials of his case. These essentials, or rules, must be easy to understand and convey, and must be indisputable.
