Newton--counselor, hypnotist and author of Journey of Souls--draws on his regressions of some 70 clients to explore the existence of souls between incarnations. The most affecting section of the book is the second chapter, where Newton turns his attention to grief and argues that between death and reincarnation, discarnate souls are able to contact loved ones and comfort them. Excerpts of his sessions with clients show people realizing that they have had one partner throughout many lives; that after previous deaths, the couple was reunited; and that after this incarnation, they will be together again. Elsewhere, Newton investigates the nonhuman manifestations of spirits on Earth, including elves, fairies and ghosts. Newton also takes on malevolent spirits; arguing that demons and the devil do not exist, he reports that after working with him, clients who initially thought they were possessed by a "malevolent spirit" usually realize they have miscommunicated with a benevolent spirit who was trying to reach them. A rich volume, chock-full of interviews and fascinating first-person narratives, this book is nonetheless not for the uninitiated; Newton sometimes fails to explain his terminology, so readers who do not know much about "lives between lives" may feel lost. Life changing information if you are ready for it. Was life changing for me--changed several core beliefs of mine as it sank in over a few years.
I've been recommending his books to everyone. If you have wonder what happens after we die, the actual accounts of his clients will tell you all. I'm more at spiritual peace since I read both books. We all come with a plan... not everything is black or white, for the most part is grey...Terrible circumstances we encounter or do might be because we had previously agreed to do them, we are helping someone (another soul) or we might have just decided to do them just because (free will). We have all been told that we come here to be happy, but not true, we come here to experience things we cannot experience in heaven. So yeah, some people have "chosen" to suffer and not get out of the hole cos that's what they came here to experience. The important thing is to learn the lesson quickly, move on and be happy until our next assignment :)...and there's no hell nor the Devil, only the one you create for yourself with your mind, when you disconnect from God/Source/the Creator.one last note, this book mentions a little more in detail about ghosts, spirits, "evil" spirits, "possessions" and other entities (not E.T.); very interesting indeed.
Both Michael Newtons books Journey of Souls & Destiny of Souls has literally changed my whole world. I 'accidentally' stumbled upon destiny of souls (which I read 1st, not knowing that journey of souls was his first one) one night meaning to google some phrase I heard on the Long Island Medium. I ended up clicking on this book for some reason, and was instantly so incredibly intrigued. This book in particular really stood out to me, after have reading this & journey of souls I can honestly say that i refer to these books in my mind once a day. I was raised Christian, but as I've gotten a little older I've always wondered- how can there be all these religions & they each have there own specific individual "rules" so to speak yet they all claim that their religion is the path to god, and THAT one religion is going to get them into heaven. I just couldn't picture dying, waiting in line to see if you were allowed access past those pearly gates and then god announces real quick "ALRIGHT GUYS, WE'RE ABOUT TO START ADMISSIONS INTO HEAVEN.. BUT GUESS WHOS THE LUCKY WINNER?? CATHOLICS! The rest y'all exit to your right, and Satan will take ya on down" so I've always kind of had this thought process that each religion has a way of coming full circle, and that being-- having faith in whoever, or whatever allows you to feel a certain way. Maybe its love, comfort, guidance, or gives you hope.. but my point is, this book did indeed make me feel validated on my thought process and the way I see/ view my god. Love this book, and will forever hold on & re read.
I've always believed in God, although my opinion on what God is has evolved over the years. I grew up thinking that He was an old man with a white beard. As I grew older this just didn't make sense to me and I have been on a quest for The Truth for the past 10+ years. While this book isn't about what God is, it definitely goes a long ways to explaining what God isn't, and it definitely proves that there is a God or at the very least an after life. I absolutely love this book. Before finishing it I had to go on line and find somebody who knows Dr. Newtons teachings so I could go through the process myself. I'm not so interested in who I was in my past lives, although that will be fascinating to find out. I'm more interested in what Dr. Newton describes as the life between life. Basically he gives great detail as to what exactly happens to our soul when we lose our physical body. The book gives great detail as to why we are here and how we chose to incarnate over and over again to learn lessons. This book has given me a new peace of mind regarding why things happen to us that seem unfair. I definitely look at life a lot differently now that I have read this book. The book has helped me to not take anything personal. Everything in life is for my own good and I have chose for these things to happen so that I can learn from them.
Lots and lots of information and case studies about what to expect on the Other Side and why. It's written well, although I had to take breathers. He's always presenting new information, but it can seem a little repetitive since it's all about love and learning on the Other Side.I'm thrilled to know there is an Other Side, but sometimes it sure sounds like everyone there is on drugs the way they're thrilled and joyful to be working most of the time, going to school, attending lectures on the importance of compassion, etc., passing the Cup of Sorrows, playing games like Tag. From all the near death books I've read, I understand the joy and peace and love there is indescribable. I guess any author trying to describe the details of life on the Other Side for hundreds of pages is going to risk rendering it almost too ordinary rather than extraordinary. Sometimes it sounds complex and filled with hierarchies that aren't really hierarchies because no one minds being at the levels they are at, even if they are lower down, because they're so darn happy. Who cares if you're feeling groovy!But I love that he's written this book. I love the regressions and the values shown to be important. I love the lessons people learn from their reincarnations. And I love that Earth is considered a very difficult and strenuous school, and the souls that choose to incarnate here return to the Other Side more insightful and strong as a result. Go earthlings!!!

I did every activity under the instruction of my economics teacher (who routinely checked the progress) and got a 5. So I guess it's worth it.
I bought this book new, but when it came, it was completely used. There were about 30 pages not written on out of 200. I want my money back.

This book is a treasure of not only vietnamese food but Cambodian too. Organized for a real cook not just a recipe follower. It introduces you to the culture and ingredients before any recipes. The photography is outstanding and the 150 recipes are a good representation of the cultures they represent. My only complaint, is she uses the local names for fish sauce for each country, so essentially the same ingredient is called a different term in Cambodian vs Vietamese dishes. Once you learn this, then the book is simply a pleasure to use as a guide for the wonderful experiences you can have preparing and enjoying this fresh healthy style of food. I Purchased it after a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam, and this is a far more cost effective way to sample the wonders of the foods from these countries.
I purchased this book first on a sale and found it so well written and clear that I decided to buy another one as a gift. The recipes are described in American and European measures (lb/oz and cups, Kg/g and spoon or metric system) making it easy for anyone to read and follow the recipes. The illustrations are very nice and the recipes cover both Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisine: many are simple to make and already brings great satisfaction to your palate. Some are more complex (making stocks can be an adventure) and very flavorful as well as inspiring. By the way, for the stocks, don't be so impressed: preparing one day the pork ribs (needing to boil first in water), save the water for a later stock for a delicious soup. Same for chicken (all stocks preserves great in the freezer anyhow so don't be scared of playing).From a few combinations, I started to make recipes within the spirit of the cooking of the countries so, this book is very educational beyond speaking of the introductory overview of the Vietnamese and Cambodian cuisine and ingredients).I highly recommend this book.
We bought this book after looking it over at the library. It provides a fantastic education about typical ingredients and the culture of Vietnam. The recipes have all been delicious so far and we have made quite a few. Nothing is too difficult and I was easily able to find the ingredients. I did have to go to the Asian market for one thing, but otherwise all were readily available. Love it and glad to have it on my cookbook shelf.

This book is simple to read and understand. The recipes aren't very authentic but are easy to follow. The recipes are more geared for restaurants. The first quarter of the book, is a write up about the cultures and food of Vietnam and surrounding countries. I made about 4 meals from the book and absolutely loved them.

I had been looking for a good Vietnamese cookbook for a long time. Saw a copy of this while on vacation in this cozy organic restaurant. I had a chance to look through it while waiting for my meal and fell in love. Decided to order it first thing after coming back from vacation. Arrived promptly and I love it!

About the Author
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, on February 9, 1940, John Michael Coetzee studied first at Cape Town and later at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Ph.D. degree in literature. In 1972 he returned to South Africa and joined the faculty of the University of Cape Town. His works of fiction include Dusklands, Waiting for the Barbarians, which won South Africa’s highest literary honor, the Central News Agency Literary Award, and the Life and Times of Michael K., for which Coetzee was awarded his first Booker Prize in 1983. He has also published a memoir, Boyhood: Scenes From a Provincial Life, and several essays collections. He has won many other literary prizes including the Lannan Award for Fiction, the Jerusalem Prize and The Irish Times International Fiction Prize. In 1999 he again won Britain’s prestigious Booker Prize for Disgrace, becoming the first author to win the award twice in its 31-year history. In 2003, Coetzee was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Were you perhaps under the impression that JM Coetzee was once an innocent, wonder-filled little boy, marvelling at all the unexpected delights of Mother Earth? Read this book and disabuse yourself! At age seven, fictionalised Coetzee, but also, one cannot help but suspect, ‘the real’ Coetzee, was already viewing the world through a prism of outsider-ness, violence, sadism and, as a special bonus, a serious case of Oedipus complex.Which isn’t to say it’s not a very good book. Like grown-up Coetzee, little Coetzee dislikes everyone, especially himself, but this is better than self-pity, I suppose. He describes the racism, brutality and narrow-mindedness of rural Afrikaans South Africa with great accuracy (sadly, I am not sure much has changed since Boyhood’s 1940s - 1950s setting), but without stereotyping the Afrikaners. It is perhaps no wonder that a sensitive child, unable to grow accustomed to discrimination, the destructive caprices of adults and the violence of Apartheid South Africa, should form such a grim world view. There are some lovely passages on the narrator’s love of his uncle’s farm and the outdoors.I most appreciated the novel a portrait of a kind of vulnerability specific to sensitive and intelligent children. As is often the case with Coetzee’s books (for me), Boyhood is a ‘good’ book, but the narrator’s disgust for human failings depresses me. I am weak enough to prefer my realism tempered with some delusional compassion for my own and hopefully others’ weakness.
In the fascinating BOYHOOD, Coetzee examines the personality and emotional growth of a very able boy, always first in his class, from his tenth to his 13th year. This boy, the prince of the household, is both childishly dependent on his mother and resentful of that dependence. As a result, he sometimes heaps scorn on her. Meanwhile, he is disappointed with his weak father, who he views as second-rate. And this boy has fantasies of omnipotence, which emerge as he practices cricket alone or considers death, which, in his imagination, he transcends. The selfish and uncharitable perspective of this self-centered boy, who is also an outsider with odd affiliations, animates the people and stories that Coetzee presents in this novel.The question you’re probably asking right now is: Who would want to read a book that explores the point of view of such an unlikable character? Well, the answer is anyone who is interested in family dynamics and the foundations and development of character, since the reader finishes this book with a firm grasp of the protagonist’s personality and the ins-and-outs of his extended family. There is also much in this book about race relations in South Africa from 1950 to 1953. This is not Coetzee’s subject in this novel. But the issue is there and manifests in surprising nuggets of information. At the age of ten, for example, the protagonist says he has personally met only four natives.IMHO, there are three truly exceptional chapters in BOYHOOD. These are:o Chapter 13: Elderly Aunt Annie breaks her hip and the protagonist, with his mother, travels to the hospital. There he learns that the father of Aunt Annie, who is the sister of his mother’s mother, wrote a long and unreadable book about his youth in Germany and his divine visions. Aunt Annie had the book printed, which she was unable to sell. Scores of copies that the world does not want are in Aunt Annie’s storage.o Chapter 15: The protagonist considers his affinity for the English language, where “he feels at home.†Specifically, he considers: How did his mother, whose extended family tends to use the Afrikaans language, learn to write and speak impeccable English? And why did his father love Shakespeare and not slip back to an Afrikaans identity?o Chapter 18: The protagonist’s father tries to reestablish his law practice. In doing so, he nearly ruins the family, which survives only because of his mother’s strength of character and the family resentments she harbors.There is, BTW, not even a single word in this pellucid novel (and probable quasi-autobiography) that is out of place. Highly recommended.
i love this author. all his books are great.
Few authors would merit the five stars... but Coetzee does it over and over again, whatever his subject, he captures me and doesn't let go until I get to the end. Insightful, funny, harshly real... and superb writing!

First book I've ever read by Coetzee; put off him before because assumed one more colonial author; this doesn't fit any stereotypes, and prompts me to start reading his novels.
