The guide includes specific chapters of each of the four headline cities, and concludes with a very worthwhile chapter on travel practicalities. As with other DK Eyewitness guides, this one includes lots of color photographs and maps. Amazon.com Review

Based on Sun Microsystems' online tutorials, The Java Tutorial Continued: The Rest of the JDK provides an up-to-the-minute guide to essential Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.2 features. This book provides material that is absolutely necessary for Java developers who are seeking to get up to speed with the latest release of Java. The book begins with a summary of JDK 1.2 features covered throughout the text. It then moves on to the new JDK 1.2 collection classes, which, for the first time, give Java programmers access to robust, customizable data collections. After a section on internationalization (also newly enhanced), the authors show how to use the Java 2D API for 2-D graphics, from creating basic graphics primitives to displaying images. The authors include some material on building JavaBeans and then discuss Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) database programming, including new JDBC 2 features such as batch updates and SQL3 data types. Sections on Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and Java servlets show off other ways to use Java in the enterprise. For the real-world Java programmer, there is perhaps nothing more frustrating than coping with Java's security model. Several chapters within this book help you take advantage of the new JDK 1.2 security policy and cover signing Java Archive (JAR) files to permit local file access for both applets and applications. The book closes with some useful material on the Java Native Interface for mixing Java with native C/C++ code. --Richard Dragan

From the Inside Flap

As the title implies, this volume of The Java Tutorial starts where the first ended. The first book covers API present in the Java platform's first release. This book covers API subsequently added to the Java platform. This book is a collection of tutorials written by Java team members. Each author who contributed to this book is an authority in his or her area of the Java platform. Some authors are even the creators of the API they describe. The hyperlinked origins of this book will be evident as you read it. For instance, underlined phrases throughout this book mimic online links. A link to material within this book is followed by the appropriate page number. A link to material outisde this book, such as to the JDK API documentation, is accompanied by a footnote that contains a URL. Other evidence of this book's online origin can be found on the first page of each trail/lesson, which provides the URL where the trail/lesson can be found in the online tutorial. You might be wondering why we use the terms "trails" and "lessons." We know that people don't learn linearly. People learn by posing a problem, solving it, uncovering other problems, solving them, and learning information as the need arises. Our original vision for the online tutorial was to encourage and enable this type of thinking and learning. We envisioned a mountain of ski trails, where at any junction, a reader could choose the most interesting or appropriate path at that time. But we also needed some sort of structure and organization, so we created a two-tier hierarchy; trails at the top level and lessons within them. We also use a high level of linking to help you pick and choose where you go and when. What You Need This book documents the Java Development Kit TM (JDK) 1.2 release of the Java platform. To compile and run the examples in this book you need a development environment that is compatible with JDK 1.2. You can use a commercially available development environment or the JDK itself. We've included JDK 1.2 on the CD-ROM that accompanies this book. The Java Plug-in ensures that your browser uses the latest Java Runtime Environment compatible with JDK 1.2. Finally, you need an editor that can save files in ASCII format with a .java extension. Also, the editor must allow you to specify both uppercase and lowercase letters in the filename.About the Authors Find out more about the authors who contributed to this book.Deborah Adair, author of Working with Java 2D Graphics and Java Sound Deborah Adair, the technical writer for the Java Media group at Sun Microsystems, specializes in designing and writing documentation for software developers and other highly technical readers. Looks like a good tutorial book - however, it's now several generations out of date, which is a problem. Sun keeps updated copies of the books on line, but the limits of printing mean that the bound volumes don't get updated. This covers Java JDK 1.2 - NOT JAVA JDK 5 (the current release). Since there are significant changes between the revisions, this is of limited utility these days.

As expected

I bypassed AWT knowing that SWING was on it's way. This book made it simple for me to create great looking GUI's for my apps. Follows the same style of "The Java Tutorial" Second Edition.

An excellent book - very informative but should be seen as a book to build on the foundation of the Java tutorial - edition 3 or something similar as the content assumes a good foundation of java basics.

Excellent book - detailed, comprehensive and yet easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this book for learning and implementing Java.

Girls Growing Up on the Autism Spectrum: What Parents and Professionals Should Know About the Pre-Teen and Teenage Years

Review

The authors unflinchingly address the most challenging issues of girls and puberty with grace and matter-of-fact discussions of pelvic exams, periods, eating disorders, healthy sexuality, and self-perception. The discussions range from choosing undergarments to the difference in boys' and girls' aggression in adolescence. Full of hints from other parents, research results, and suggestions from professionals, this book is an essential guide to adolescence for parents of girls on the spectrum (and it's also great for parents of boys!). Author: the Spectrum, The Newsletter of The Autism Society of North Carolina, USThis book provides a valuable insight into the concerns commonly faced by girls with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), and their parents. It offers advice and coping strategies on a host of areas, including approaching adolescence, navigating puberty, self-perception and self-confidence, understanding friendships, looking at healthy sexuality, promoting personal safety and many more...The book has a warm and engaging reading style, and the may case studies of experiences from families, daughters and educators provide brave testimonies and excellent recommendations for support; a useful reference list is also provided. This book is a must have read for those interested in helping females on the autistic spectrum. Author: Youth in MindIt gives me great pleasure to introduce ASQ readers to this terrific book!...Girls Growing Up on the Autism Spectrum is an A+ read! Author: Liane Holliday Willey, EdD, Autism Spectrum QuarterlyThis book is not only reassuring; it is inspiring, and bursting with ideas and achievable strategies. The authors write with authority and conviction, and tackle even the most difficult and delicate of topics. If ever you needed to be convinced that girls with ASD can overcome the difficulties and challenges of puberty and adolescence, have successful friendships and relationships and enjoy a healthy sexuality, then take the time to read this book - it is a must-have for families, teachers and therapists alike. Author: Sarah Attwood, author of Making Sense of Sex: A Forthright Guide to Puberty, Sex and Relationships for People with Asperger's SyndromeThe authors tackle an important and sensitive issue for young people with ASC. The information presented is based in research and presented clearly in a most usable format. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to young people (it might even help a few boys!) with ASC and their parents. Author: E. Veronica Bliss, psychologist and Director of Missing Link Support Services, LtdShana Nichols, Gina Marie Moravcik, and Samara Pulver Tetenbaum provide solid, specific advice on teen issues - social life, changing bodies, friendships, diet and nutrition, self-reliance, anxiety, and more. This is an excellent beginning, with resources listed (books, articles, Web sites, blogs) in every chapter and short case studies that break up the text throughout. The authors tackle the bigger issues of socialization and friendships, plus the nitty-gritty of raising an adolescent girl - periods, ob-gyn exams, weight, privacy, and hygiene. Author: ForeWordThere's really only one way to say this: If you have a daughter anywhere on the autism spectrum, or even with unexplainable quirky behaviour, this book is a must. While there are hundreds of good books about autism, girls have their own unique issues when it comes to this puzzling disorder. Dr. Nichols' book is a standout. Addressing girls on their own, and in such an insightful, scholarly and reader-friendly way, what 'Girls...' has done is invaluable. You'll be shocked at how easy it is to have a girl on the spectrum misdiagnosed or not therapeutically treated correctly, but you're not left on your own. Nichols provides great counsel. 'Girls...' offers not only important information about the child, but it also provides necessary strategies for parents (and medical professionals) to help improve the child's life, and not a single subject goes untouched. The teen years are tough enough for any girl, but for one who has spectrum challenges, it can be devastating. Nichols, the clinical director of the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism and Developmental Disorders, provides expert advice that is practical and necessary, on topics ranging from cognitive concerns and everyday behaviours to sexuality and just fitting in, which for a teenaged girl can be the most important issue of all--on the spectrum or not. Nichols draws from many wells here - vast research, conversations and interviews with parents, teachers and medical experts, and most importantly, these young girls. This is one of those hallelujah books for which parents search high and low. Author: Long Island PressRather than constructing a "how-to" book, in which pre-planned lessons have been created focusing on puberty or sexuality issues, the authors provide a broad conceptual treatment of the relevant sociological and cultural issues. That is, not only do they address the social, communication, and behavioural vulnerabilities that these girls may display, but they place these vulnerabilities in the context of a girl's social world. From this vantage point, the authors describe concrete steps and processes which may be useful for working with girls on the spectrum to help them cope with the issues they confront as they mature...This volume continually reminds the reader to think about the challenges typically developing girls and young women face throughout the pre-teen and teenage years as the context for their understanding of a girl with an ASD. After 17 years of trying to understand the laundry list of diagnosis' my daughter had received (ADHD, Severe Dyslexia, Receptive and Expressive Language Disorder, Sensory Integration and Modulation Disorder, Anxiety and OCD), I finally got my answer. When I read this book, I felt like I was reading my daughter's life story and wished I had discovered it years sooner. Interestingly, when she was 14, through the encouragement of my daughter's life long counselor, I took her to a major university and had yet another practitioner dismiss her individual issues as follows after I had him do a screening for ASD: "On a behavior rating scale specifically targeting symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder, xxx's mother provided responses indicating that she displays many symptoms similar to those of individuals with ASD. However, the combination of her learning and attention problems is more likely than ASD to explain these symptoms."So 3 years later, I read this book and was so moved, that I called the authors, flew to New York and had them evaluate her. I told them I had a pencil and a highlighter when I started reading their book and finally put them down because I was highlighting everything! The diagnosis is in and my 17 year old daughter has high functioning autism. Finally someone who understands how ASD presents in girls has put clarity to our daughter's situation and now we can more wholistically help her prepare for adult life. Girls with ASD are "research orphans" and there are few practitioners in the world that understand how differently they can present. By far, it is the most important book in my library of books on all of my daughter's challenges. It has changed our lives.

I like this book because it gives a lot of concrete examples/tips to try to help your daughter with many different aspects of real life issues. I would recommend this book.

This is a good book for someone who is looking for stories and examples or mild to lower functioning ASD - I felt like for my daughter who's high functioning and twice gifted this has nothing that was helpful. Even if my child was lower functioning I feel like this was more of stories that were depressing and not actually helpful in teaching the parent how to handle situations. This book has been recommended by several therapist and psychologists but like I said I personally didn't find it helpful and felt like it was a bit more of stories vs helping me to understand what ASD is and how I can help my child through issues such as melt downs, periods, sex, personal hygiene ect

I could not set it down! Affirmed so much I have had questioned by family over the years and enlightened me as to my daughter's care for the future. This should be prescribed reading for all Doctors and parents of developmentally challenged children. My 28 y.old daughter was diagnosed asautism spectrum until last year at her new " work" facility. It changed the perspectiveand approach to my daughter.

Best book yet on what my daughter regularly experiences as an aspie/ pdd-nos gal. Very informative, good combination of facts and person experiences. Too bad our girls are overlooked as having Aspergers for so long not allowing for earlier interventions and services. There is hope after reading this.

I bought this book to help my Autistic Step-Daughter navigate her pre-teen and teenage years. The author covered every single topic that I knew would need to be covered, and it was extremely well-written. Everything was written without getting bogged down in clinic terms (unlike every other book I have read on Autism). I highly recommend this book!

As a school social worker, books on working with students on the Autism Spectrum Disorder are helpful. This is a great resource!

Provides clear and concise information about guiding a daughter with Autism or Asperger's through childhood, puberty, adolescence and beyond. Much information about health and personal care.
