Life changing book for me! I first saw the name Suzy Cohen while I was waiting in line at Whole Foods and there was a magazine that she was featured in on Thyroid health. I purchased that magazine and couldn't put it down, I later purchased her book "Drug Muggers" and it truly has changed my life. I had a full Hysterectomy 3 years ago and my doctor at the time put me on huge amounts of Estrogen and along with Progesterone and Testosterone to balance my hormones and then after the shock of my body going through everything, my cortisol was high and my thyroid was sick. I gained 10lbs. overnight and was bloated and miserable, I was tired all the time, depressed and had no energy to do my morning runs. I hated the way I looked, I gained most of my weight in my thighs, butt and stomach. I complained to my doctor that I felt the Estrogen was to high because the only time I felt a little bit better and less bloated was the 2 weeks I was using my Progesterone that counter balanced the high Estrogen. I did my blood work again and it showed my Estrogen was low and my doctor said that my body was "craving Estrogen"! I continued listening to her and continued to be depressed and never felt right and I assumed this is what happens when you go into early Menopause and your fat and depressed so just get over it! I decided to go to someone else and they put me on a Estrogen patch that was 1/2 the potency of the Bio-Identical cream I was on and literally overnight I wasn't as bloated and I started to feel a little bit better, well at least my inner thighs weren't rubbing up against each other when I ran. I still wasn't quite right, not the way I use to be and I noticed if I ate broccoli at night I would wake up to be less bloated the next day. I didn't put all of it together until I read Suzy's magazine and book. I have always taken supplements but not the ones my body was being depleted from the HRT. I started taking individual B vitamins along with a B-complex and my mood lifted dramatically and I had energy again that I haven't felt in over 3 years, I also started taking Calcium D-Glucarate to flush out the excess Estrogen I am back to my original weight. I can't thank you enough Suzy for writing this book and opening my eyes, I truly am thankful!
I am so grateful to have this book. It has helpful information as to what nutrients may need supplementation when we take certain drugs. Natural ways to restore what is missing are also mentioned. I especially appreciate the information as to what forms of a vitamin or mineral are most easily assimilated, as well as what not-so-useful forms are being used by some makers because they are cheaper. There is a very helpful list of Resources, Great supplements: Companies that put their best foot forward" on p. 327 of the paperback version (the one I bought); also a chapter on daily values, with explanations of some abbreviations and "Are megadoses the answer?" (No.) and "Why I pay no attention to the numbers."People anxious to avoid unnecessary or harmful added ingredients will be happy to read, toward the end of the book, about "flavoring, binders, humectants, lubricants, disintegrators, and preservatives." And did you know this? (p. 313 of paperback): "Supplement makers...often list an ingredient even if it appears in a negligible amount or if it's extracted from the wrong portion of a plant. For example, unworthy supplements may state 'gingko extract,' whereas a high-quality supplement is proud to disclose the dosage as '40 mg gingko extract (leaf) standardized to 24 percent heterosides." (OK, I admit that I don't know anything about heterosides, but you get the idea.)Here are just a few of the many, many things I didn't know until I read this book:(1) If you are supplementing zinc and copper, neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood, they need to be taken in the proper ratio. "The ratio of copper to zinc is far more clinically valuable than the concentration of either one." Too much of one, and you end up with a relative deficiency of the other. Sometimes a deficiency of zinc arises due to the use of birth control pills that cause excessive copper, and then the resulting mood changes (for the worse) may end up being treated with psychoactive drugs, whereas the problem is actually being caused by an imbalance.(2) Re vitamin E: the lab-created form, dl-alphatocopherol, is cheaper to produce, but d- (not dl-) alphatocopherol is more biologically active. I had already read that somewhere else, but not this: Vitamin E is the name for a family of 8 molecules, so "the very best brands have all eight in their formulas." The author remarks that vitamins coming in the wrong form are a deal-breaker for her, and would be for me, too. And now, thanks to this book, I know which ones ARE deal-breakers.(3) CoQ10 suspended in rice bran oil or olive oil, rather than a dry powder in a capsule gets into the body's cells more easily and may be more bio-available. The better absorbed form of CoQ10 (i.e., ubiquinol) is sold under the brand name Kaneka QH.(4) The author considers it better to take beta-carotene vitamin A, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor. Buy natural forms because synthetic ones do not offer antioxidant protection, and the author and some other experts actually consider synthetic versions of beta-carotene to be "downright dangerous."The list of things this book has taught me goes on and on. But speaking of lists, here are the titles of a few lists and charts in the book:"Grapefruit interaction chart""Common drug muggers" (This chart is great, with headings such as "Types" (of drugs) / "Common Drugs" / "Install your security system" [what to take to counteract the depletion of nutrients in each case], and "...or these complications may result.")"Supplements to battle the drug muggers" (what supplement has what important nutrients, and what "drug muggers" it will fight)"Drug muggers of biotin (Vitamin B7)""Drug muggers of calcium""Drug muggers of CoQ10""Drug muggers of glutathione" ("The liver uses glutathione to metabolize all the medications you take and remove them from the body once their purpose has been served." Without it, your couldn't clear drugs and toxins from your blood.)"Drug muggers of magnesium"And many more...I should let it be known here that I have no connection with the author or publisher of this book or any other reason to praise it, other than the fact that I have found it so impressive and useful.
I saw this book on television and decided to order it. I was struggling with some horrendous health problems and doctors were confused and unable to stop the pain. One medication, led to another, then another and they were still looking at adding more. Upon the books arrival, I immediately looked up my medications and there it was...the begnning of my relief. I began to immediately supplement what one medication had robbed from my body and even was able to get off the medication. I had been struggling with debilitating migraines and headaches for months and the relief was immediate. My pain levels went from a 10 to a 5 within days and are now down to 2's and 3's on a regular basis. Victor John Stenger (born 1935) is an American particle physicist, philosopher, author, and religious skeptic; he is also a regular featured science columnist for the Huffington Post. He has written many other books, such as God and the Multiverse: Humanity's Expanding View of the Cosmos,The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning: Why the Universe Is Not Designed for Us,The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason,Not by Design,Has Science Found God? The Latest Results in the Search for Purpose in the Universe,God and the Folly of Faith: The Incompatibility of Science and Religion, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 2009 book, “In I tried to be very clear that I was not talking about every conceivable god, just the God with a capital ‘G.’ This is a God who not only created the universe but continues to play a central role in its operation and, most important, in the lives of humans for whom he has reserved a special place in the scheme of things… I am not finished. Other conceivable gods can be imagined whose attributes also lend their actions to be examined under the light of reason and science… Many people in nations less religious than America believe there must be more to the universe than matter. I will focus on two concepts of realities thought to lie ought there beyond the material world of science that at the same time are based ostensibly on scientific principles---specifically quantum mechanics… The first concept, which I term ‘quantum spirituality,’ asserts that quantum mechanics has provided us with a connection between the human mind and the cosmos. The second concept, which I term ‘quantum theology,’ argues that quantum mechanics and chaos theory provide a place for God to act in the world without violating his own natural laws.†(Pg. 13-14) He continues, “I will [also] consider … a God who created the universe but does not act in any way that is inconsistent with the laws of nature. This God would be very difficult to detect by the means I applied in ‘God: The Failed Hypothesis.’ Such a God would not perform miracles… Such a God would have left no evidence behind at the creation, so we would expect creation to appear perfectly natural to physicists and cosmologists… Such a God would not answer prayers… Such a God would not reveal facts to humans that they cannot have obtained by sensory means… A moral God who deliberately hides himself, exacting punishment on those who do not believe for good reasons… However, we can imagine a God who deliberately hides from us but issues no punishment… and no reward… Such a God would not need his creations to grovel before him.†(Pg. 15-16)He acknowledges, “The story of Galileo’s trial by the Inquisition… is also part myth and part fact. Historians now largely agree that Galileo was not tried for teaching heliocentrism, but for disobeying a Church order… in 1616 he was instructed not to discuss heliocentrism as a fact until he had definitive physical proof. This he claimed to have in 1632 with the publication of Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. In fact the proof presented there, which was based on the assumption that Earth’s motion causes the tides, was wrong. The argument… incorrectly predicted only one high tide a day. Galileo dismissed as ‘useless fiction’ the proposal by Kepler that the moon caused the tides, which turned out to be correct… In 1633 Galileo was tried for disobeying the order of the Church. He agreed to a plea bargain in which he would admit that he had gone too far but for still unknown reasons the Inquisition overruled the agreement and handed down a harsh sentence in which Galileo was forced to recant.†(Pg. 89-90)He asserts, “Since we still do not understand how life originally came about on Earth, anyone is free to propose that God initiated the process. However, saying that ‘God did it’ is no more an explanation than ‘Nature did it.’ We need to know how it was done. Furthermore, just because science cannot currently explain the origin of life, we have no reason to expect it never will. Seeking God in the gaps of scientific knowledge has never proven to be a fruitful enterprise. Science has always had a way of filling its own gaps.†(Pg. 103)He also notes, “However, Darwinism is perfectly compatible with the deist god of the Enlightenment. Evolution can be seen as the way the deity decided to create life in the universe, the whole development of life including humanity being written into the laws of nature at the creation. The problem is, this requires an acceptance of the clockwork universe and leaves no room for human free will… However… the clockwork universe has been refuted by quantum physics, thereby pulling the rug out from Enlightenment deism.†(Pg. 104)He says of Fritjof Capra’s The Tao of Physics, “To Capra, bootstrap theory was a beautiful example of the connectedness that he found in Eastern philosophy… Capra joined [Geoffrey] Chew’s group in 1975, just having written his best seller, and… just as the bootstrap began to unravel.†(Pg. 145) Later, he adds, “Capra was putting his money on bootstrap theory, which did away with the notion of elementary particles. However, even by the time of the publication of Tao, elementary particles were back in fashion and had become part of the standard model… Capra’s contention that physics implies a universe as one interconnected whole is edifying and poetic. Certainly, parts of the universe are connected in various ways. But Capra insists that we cannot understand our world unless we treat it as one inseparable whole.†(Pg. 171)He argues, “The main message about complexity… for the purposes of this book is the fact that complexity can arise naturally from simplicity… The development of complex systems from simpler systems has been demonstrated in virtually every field of science and, indeed, everyday life. Snowflakes develop spontaneously from water vapor. Amino acids and other molecules of life are easily assembled from basic chemical elements… Once life exists, organisms develop from the splitting or merging of cells.†(Pg. 151) He continues, “Emergence is just a name for the evolution of complexity out of simplicity, no doubt a notable phenomenon and little doubt that it arises purely from particles of matter.†(Pg. 161)He explains, “The difference I have with creationists is they think the Bible is correct and science is wrong, while I think that science is correct and the Bible is wrong. As we shall see, however, evolution does not conflict with the new deism… while we do not know exactly the mechanism by which our universe appeared 13.7 billion years ago, we can present any number of plausible scenarios based on well-established physics and cosmology… Similarly, we cannot explain exactly how life originated, but many proposed scenarios consistent with well-established chemistry and biology can be found in reputable scientific journals. Thus no rational basis exists for claiming that a supernatural origin for life or the universe must have occurred… no case can be made that we need something more than matter to understand the universe.†(Pg. 211-212)He asks, “If life is converging inevitably toward high intelligence, how is it that of the millions of species on Earth we have only one, Home sapiens, with that ability? Look how far ahead we are than other animals in intelligence. Indeed, since most life forms are microbial, intelligence would not seem to be very high at all on the universe’s agenda.†(Pg. 231)He states, “The new deist god creates the universe but includes in it a huge element of chance. Of course apologists will work very hard to reconcile this new god with Christianity, but… It is hard to see how they will make this god into one who still should be worshipped and prayed to… I have bad news for them. Modern physics and cosmology imply that all the creator did when he made the universe, if he existed at all, was make a single toss of the dice.†(Pg. 235-236) Later, he adds, “The Enlightenment deist god, who created a perfectly predetermined universe, can almost but not quite be ruled out… And science has no reason to introduce into its explanatory systems an Enlightenment deist god.†(Pg. 261) Still later, he observes, “Deism and Christianity have always been totally incompatible---as incompatible as science and Christianity.†(Pg. 243)He summarizes, “My main arguments against the existence of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic God are scientific ones. A God who plays such an important role in the universe as the God of the great monotheisms should leave observable, physical evidence for his existence… he cannot deliberately hide from us and remain a moral god… Absence of evidence can be evidence of absence beyond a reasonable doubt when the evidence should be there and is not found… God’s actions in the world, including the creation itself, should be detectable. Of course, an all-powerful God is free to do whatever he wants, but it is inconsistent with his omnipotence for God to violate presumably perfect laws that he instituted in the first place. Furthermore, such a God would be much easier to detect by our direct observation of natural law violations. We see no such violations… We can safely conclude that an omnipotent God who takes direct divine action in the world without violating natural laws can be ruled out.†(Pg. 241)He concludes, “So we appear to have good evidence for a universe that came about spontaneously, without cause, from nothing. The laws of physics also came from nothing. The structure of the universe emerged from nothing. Indeed, we can view that structure, including Earth and humanity, as forms of frozen nothing.†(Pg. 262-263)This book is a substantial addition to Stenger’s earlier arguments; this book focuses more on the “religious/philosophical†issues than the “scientific†issues, but it will be of great interest to those who like his other books (although it should be supplemented with at least one or two of his more scientifically-focused books).
I am a big fan of Dr. Stenger, and I found Quantum Gods absolutely outstanding. Besides addressing the misuse and abuse of quantum physics concepts, the book provided a magnificent, in depth discourse on the evolution of particle physics and quantum mechanics. I am on my third reading now. I also appreciated the professionalism of Dr. Stenger by not reverting to name calling that so many authors seem to do (A great example, and travesty, is the pitiful work by Vox Day: The Irrational Atheist). I do thank the late Dr. Robert L. Doty (my father-in-law and friend of George Gamow) for turning me on to the works of Victor Stenger. If you truly appreciate science and physics, please read Quantum Gods. It will enrich your life.
I found this book to be thought-provoking and worth reading, although I have a couple of substantial criticisms. Up front, let me say it felt somewhat padded to get to book-length: about half (roughly the middle half) consists of encyclopedia entry-style sections on topics in the history of science.The motivation behind the book is a good one: a sequel to his prior book which moves beyond traditional religion to criticize some newer and less traditional ideas about God and spirituality. He identifies two targets: the first is the group of new age-type ideas which invoke quantum mechanics (QM) to support ideas about personal spiritual powers and/or cosmic consciousness; the second is a set of attempts to accommodate God's putative role as creator or intervening agent with modern science.With regard to the first target, I liked his debunking of new-agers who think humans "create their own reality" and thereby acquire something like paranormal powers. What I didn't like is that his own interpretation of QM is idiosyncratic: he tries to hew as close as possible to the worldview of classical materialism. He dismisses the reality of the wave-like aspect of QM, and tries to argue we can have a particle-only ontology (with one twist: the particles need to be capable of moving backward and forward in time). This is an unusual and unpersuasive interpretation.I thought the best part of the book were the late chapters criticizing "quantum theology" - some recent ideas about accommodating religion and science. I agree with Stenger that attempts to locate divine action in emergent phenomena or in subtle manipulation of quantum outcomes are fraught with difficulty. He admits it's possible we could have a deist God if we accept that this God created an indeterministic cosmos and was willing "play dice." Such a God, of course, isn't very attractive to those who yearn for a more traditional deity. But even here Stenger's own view is that there are natural accounts of the birth of the universe which do away with the need for a creator.Stenger doesn't devote significant space to the idea of the multiverse, although there are an increasing number of physical and cosmological theories which suggest its existence. While I agree with most of Stenger's criticisms of theology, I think the multiverse is the one conceptual place where there's the potential for a naturalistic worldview to make contact with a (non-traditional) notion of God: a transcendent and creative entity of which we are but a small part.
This is a fantastic book on physics. Not since Stephen Hawking have I read a physicist so informative. In fact he is probably more informative. He debunks New Age mystics in this book, which even many self-proclaimed atheists buy into, hence why some of the reviews are mediocre even from secular people. It's a great book and really shed some light on quantum mechanics, and I recommend this be read before or after The Unconscious Quantum, also by Victor J. Stenger.

He may not have succeeded in his initial goal but he comes as close as anyone in writing a biography of our ocean.He explains how the ocean was born, how people living on its shores reacted to it and how, most importantly, it has influenced the development of the civilized world. To do this, he tells tales of man's first attempts to go out on the water, pirates, naval battles, the development of sea-going commerce and other topics. He also includes numerous anecdotes from his personal experience with the ocean.He fears for our future if we don't change and start treating our environment like a home and not a garbage pit.I'm not opposed to space exploration. It has resulted in many benefits for mankind. Still, I wish just a portion of the money and the interest could be directed toward oceanography. This is the planet on which we live. I have no desire to go live on a barren rock where there's no other forms of life.
In my lifetime, the number of books I have failed to finish number less than the fingers of one hand. Ones where I skip large sections are even fewer.I almost did not finish this book! Early on Winchester gets bogged down in lengthy, over detailed, uninteresting commentary about the Atlantic and the arts. YAWN! I also was a bit put off by his "show off intellectualism" by insisting on throwing in $10,000 words for no good reason. Being a retired journalist, I never used them with an audience ... so I wonder if he did when he was supposedly a journalist.Having said that, after skipping that major section, Winchester redeemed himself when he started examining the early explorers of the Atlantic, and he continued an intriquing account from that point until the final pages of the book.
Normally I would not comment on typos or proof-reading errors in a book, but my Kindle edition of this book (bought in June, 2018) abounds in them. Some pages have several errors. After a while the errors intrude on the reading experience. Turning out sloppy work is an insult to the reader who pays over $9 for the book – especially a book by a respected author and journalist who has written over 20 books, quite a few of which I have read and enjoyed.Hyphenation and the use of ‘m-dashes’ is confused, inconsistent and idiosyncratic. Some of these errors are the inevitable result of the way Kindle breaks up words to suit different reading devices, but most are the result of bad (or non-existent) proof-reading of the Kindle edition. Hurricane Katrina appears mid-sentence as Ka-trina, as does the Nether-land ‘s (with space as shown) instead of the Netherlands. On one page the minute marine organism Prochlorococcus is spelt Pro-chlorcoccus and as Prochlo-rococcus in mid-sentence. There is ‘Ayoung researcher’ instead of ‘A young researcher’. There is the phrase ‘do-ingterrible damage’ - you can work out what is intended, but why should the reader do the job of the editor?Italics are used in a weird way. Some text that should be in italics is not, and conversely. For example, years are sometimes in italic, sometimes not. One word of a related two-word phrase might be in italic, the other not.The book is padded with lengthy quotes. Bizarrely, they are all centre-justified. Some are double spaced as well. A couple of short quotes are in fonts that don’t match the style of the text – probably an error and not a stylistic choice.Paragraphs are spaced and have the first line indented. Either style is acceptable but not both together. Printed books conventionally have first-line indents but no space between paragraphs, while electronic text often has space between paragraphs and no indents.Many of the footnotes are irritatingly trivial or marginally relevant at best. Probably one-third of the 90+ footnotes should be culled.The author used Shakespeare’s ‘The Seven Ages of Man’ from ‘As You Like It’ to structure his book, which is quite a useful approach when discussing the Atlantic Ocean from its origins to its ultimate demise. Unfortunately, a couple of the chapters are excessively padded to fit the structure. In Chapter 3, the author goes on and on about literature and art works, which supposedly relate in some way to the Atlantic, but the discussion wanders down marginally relevant byways that are far from the central theme of the chapter.The quality of the writing is highly variable, ranging from lyrical excellence at Winchester’s best and sinking into a morass of rambling text at its worst. Winchester can be excessively preachy at times and self-indulgent at others. That’s largely a matter of taste, not necessarily a defect of the book.In summary, I cannot recommend my Kindle edition in its present state. It is a great pity, because Winchester has a good story to tell and often tells it compellingly.I have not read the print edition. Possibly it is free from the technical defects that ruin the Kindle edition, which should be withdrawn from sale, edited and properly proof-read.
Simon Winchester consistently scores with all-embracing histories. In "Atlantic" his passion for this most grand of all the oceans is readily apparent. He crafts the tale with not only knowledge and wit, but with a palpable love that bursts through the entire narrative. Highly informative with photos throughout, lovers of both historical yarns and solid research should find this work both satisfying and enlightening.
