The code presented in this new book will not run due to changes (at least in part) to Beautiful Soup, which is used throughout the book. I'd love to get my $30 back to apply to the new version of the book when it comes out. Amazon seems to indicate the book is due in April '18 but the author's blog indicates it is not due out until the fall of '18. This book is useless as is so I'm not so sure I want to support the author by buying the new edition when it comes out. Lesson learned: don't buy any programming/technology books more than a year old as technology just changes too quickly.
This is mostly a beginners' manual, so don't expect extremely complicated programs or tips. However, if you are new to web scraping, this is a great introductory book to the tools available in Python and their uses. In my case, I had learned most of what was in the book using trial and error (and lots of time going through Stack Exchange questions!). If I had had this book before, I would have saved a lot of time learning the basics.
This is a truly excellent book. It is the closest I have seen in a book to the experience of sitting with a friendly, approachable expert who is ready to answer your questions intelligently and in a supportive way. You need the very basics of Python as can be learned from the Pycharm educational version but everything else is provided.
90% of the time this book has exactly what I needed to solve a real world problem. 10% of the time, it went over my head and I spent hours on YouTube shoring up the material I couldn't gain from the book. In example, the section on storing data in MySQL via PyMySQL was a bit too short, unclear for me to get a real handle on how to automate db queries with Python.Nonetheless, as an entry level python programmer, I found the book mostly readily accessible. If you're an experienced coder (python or otherwise) this book is a great investment in your data acquisition skills.I'll end on a positive note - my boss likes weather updates for our offices in four different cities (we do logistics.) He wants this report at 6:15am daily. I was able to write a .py script that scrapes the webpage, compiles results into a string, logs into my email account and sends the report to him daily, on time. Now I never have to worry about this early morning task again!If you need to automate the retrieval, processing and delivery of online information, this book is for you!
Good at describing how web scraping works but does not go into a lot more details on most areas. For example, it lacks completely as how to handle cookies. It's true that the requests library handles the cookies automatically but if the cookies need to be manipulated, it doesn't describe how such can be done.
After learning the basics of Python I really struggled to dig into a project. Programming, just like a foreign language, leaves your memory quickly if you don't use it. I had tried web scraping with several video tutorials, but couldn't work through the tutorials to the point of understanding how to build one myself. Then...I got Ryan Mitchell's book. This book sets you up with not only the basics, but also more advanced techniques that you'll need to really build out your scraper. Ryan touches on other subjects such as using a database, working around data hidden in Javascript, cleaning up data, using NLPT, and more. You'll get a solid foundation to launch into your own Web Scraping project, and learn just enough about additional topics (like MySql) to integrate them into your scraper. I really appreciate how Ryan made this approachable for both a Python beginner, and for an intermediate user.
Good book with some good tips. Fairly basic but does touch on some advanced scraping techniques briefly. Author does a good job and I would absolutely recommend this to others looking to learn more about extracting info from web pages.
Clear, concise, and engaging. I have been able to easily translate the lessons into practical projects. The author spells out the considerations for using each particular technique and the situations in which some might be more effective than others. The chapters are mutually reinforcing but you may find yourself skipping around if you already know what you want to get out of web scraping. This should not be your first python book.

This book was read to us when my DS's school had a Parent's "Stay Play" I saw the reaction to the children as the teacher read the book and had to bring it home for him. When it arrived, his eye's lit up and he screamed Momma Wolf's Coming. He's 2.5 years old and loves turning the pages on this colorful book and repeating the words he remembers from story time. It's a really great book and I love just interacting with him as he excitedly talks about the book! I highly recommend this book to any toddler!
One of our favorite books. Had to buy another hard copy as ours got dog earred after a few kids :) It is suspenseful, even a might scary for some children as the wolf is drawn in the typical vein of big bag wolf. The end leaves the reader pleasantly surprised and asking, "again?!" The illustrations are some of the most detailed and colorful, text is big enough to read comfortably.
Great book! Read it to my grandson who is four and he loves it.
My 3 1/2 year old granddaughter's favorite animal is a wolf. She absolutely loves this books and wants to read it all of the time . Some of the pictures were a little scary the first time we read the book. I also had to explain what a surprise party was so she could comprehend the story. After the first reading , she loved the story. She even told me the wolf "turned over a new leaf and that's why the animals liked him and gave him a party." A wonderful life lesson learned!" I highly recommend this book.
This book, a favorite of mine, was a gift to my niece's daughter, age 3. I actually ordered 2 copies one for her and one for me. She loves this book as do all the children at a school where I read. Not only are the illustrations and story captivating for young imaginations, but the surprise ending delights, and teaches how preconceived notions aren't always accurate! I WAS SO HAPPY THIS BOOK WAS AVAILABLE .....as it was published sometime ago.....This story is one of my all time favorites.....its sure to delight children ages 3 to 6 and readers ages 18 to 95!!!
So our daughter came home from school and earnestly told us that Wolf is Coming. We weren't sure if this was some veiled and creepy Doctor Who reference or something else. Suffice to say, we were relieved when we finally learned that it's all about a surprise birthday party for their friend Wolf. He's not going to blow your house down; he's there for his party!
Excellent book! Not too much print, but a lot of communication via the illustrations. The colors of the illustrations are some of the best I have ever seen on printed children's books. It's a bit of a mystery story, and ends well, unexpectedly. I wish I could illustrate this well!
My 2 year old granddaughter loves this story. I had to read it five times the first time I read it to her. She loves howling with the wolf and exclaiming "Surprise!" as we read it. The illustrations are great. A winner.

I love this book! It is very helpful! I love that it is hard cover and the rubber-ish feel to it. The dust cover it nice but I always take it off when using because it gets in the way, always sliding off, etc.. Very nice cloth that comes with this(we aren't opening ours though). Amazon sells this at an unbeatable price!
Since Diamond and Pearl, the "official" Pokemon guides (produced by the Pokemon Company and published/distributed by Prima) have been released in two volumes, with the Pokedex being included in the second volume, with the exception of Platinum's guide which was thicker and did have a Pokedex. So I bought the X/Y guide realizing and expecting this. What is annoying is that, while pages for each location have a listing of the Pokemon available, there's no index at the back that lists Pokemon by name and points out what routes they are found in for cross-referencing. There's also no listing of attacks and items at the back, just a TM list and info on what the Marts sell. I know that the Diamond/Pearl guide had these lists, because I just checked it as I'm writing this.The guide is hardcover and smaller in terms of page size, about the size of a novel. Which means that the maps and font are smaller and it's much harder to lay flat opened to a specific page. I don't see why they went this route with this guide, especially for reasons that I'll cover later. As a walkthrough, it is fairly detailed, pointing out items, listing (but not identifying on the map) hidden items, and showing the locations of each enemy trainer and the number of Pokemon they have (but not their complete rosters; then again, these guides have never included them). Full rosters are given for major opponents, and detailed strategies are given for Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. The walkthrough only covers up to the Elite Four - post-game matters will likely be in the next volume. It covers how to use the game's touch screen and communication features. So as a walkthrough, it's okay - not great, since I would have liked to see an alphabetical list of available Pokemon as well as details about the attacks and items - after all, this is a new generation of games, so there's going to be new examples of both.So, why did I say this guide was of poor quality? Its construction. Like many of the recent Pokemon guides, this one is printed on semi-glossy paper with poor-quality ink that tends to smear. I was hoping that since this is a supposed "collector's edition" that they would have used upgraded ink to print it. What is worse, however, is the horrible binding job that they did with my particular copy. The back cover and last page of the book has separated from the rest of it after less than a month of use, which is inexcusable. And no, I was not rough with handling the book. The binding came apart through normal use. Of course, the fact that it is a hardcover made using it normally (as a guide that you need to keep opened to a particular page) difficult.I'd really rather they stuck with the old-style (paperback, full-size) Pokemon guides (except with better quality ink, of course). Because not only is this hardcover edition smaller and harder to keep open to a specific page, apparently it was designed solely as a collector's item and wasn't durable enough to withstand, you know, actually using it as a guide.
Any time there is a new Pokémon game coming out, I always preorder the guide book with it. It's just what I've been doing since Gold, Silver, and Crystal. The best guide book I ever bought was the one for Platinum. It was huge, but something was missing from it. When Black and White came out with their Hardcover guide books, it was perfect.When I bought this book, I was expecting something similar and in-between Platinum up through Black and White 1&2. The only thing this book offers you is a simple walkthrough of the game. There is nothing in the back of the book about the Kalos Region pokédex. Nothing on how they evolve or when. On top of that, some of the info in the book is also wrong, such has some of the Horde info. Much better off using Serebii for that sort of info. The book itself, while conveniently hardcover, is also quite small. Certainly nothing compared to the former guidebooks.If you're looking for just a walkthrough, this book is fairly ok for it. But if you're in need of more than that, you'd be better off using the internet for it and saving your money.
Three stars because the information contained within the book is laid out well, and is as good as the guides before it.I've read a lot of the past reviews and have this to say.1) No regional 'Dex is unacceptable. I got it, most of us probably don't need a national pokedex in a volume 1, but c'mon, give us a regional Dex.2) The size is atrocious. This half size book means they likely did half ass research on wether or not this book would be appreciated at this size. Let me tell you now, it's not! The larger books can lay open in my lap while I am playing; this small one is an inconvenience at numerous levels, but mostly because it keep flopping shut on me.3) A couple of the features from previous books have been left out. The main one is the "day of the week guide" and the easy 2 page summary guide, usually found at the beginning of the old books. Those two features are exceptionally helpful and are, sadly, absent.All in all, the information provided is mostly complete, there wasn't a lot of info on the legendaries birds, which would have been helpful (like how to track them?!?!), but I still used the book extensively.
