Times New Roman: How We Quit Our Jobs, Gave Away Our Stuff & Moved to Italy, by Martha Miller

Review

"What a clever title for a memoir that enables the reader to imagine he or she is living in Rome! Author Martha Miller explains how she and her husband used their 21-Month Plan, which included forgoing stops at Starbucks, to prepare for a year in Italy. The reader will enjoy the author's friendship with Gabrielle, a well-heeled French marquise married to an Italian. Gabrielle presents Miller with a portal into the life of the elite, and the author describes her findings with grace. We cannot help but like Gabrielle or, for that matter, dislike Signore Green Thumb who makes life unpleasant on the rooftop. I liked Miller's description of the difficulty she found in taking Italian classes as well as her presentation of other students. The outside world does not interfere in this book save for the tragic moment of the World Trade Center attack. I enjoyed reading about Italian TV as well as dogs in churches and the lady Miller sees at church (and on the street) with a pet ferret. Miller's graceful reflections extend to her Acknowledgements, which other writers will find beautiful; she makes it clear that no writer creates a perfect work alone. This memoir of a year in Italy is one that travel readers will find very engaging. The cover art is perfect and the testimonials on the back work well."Â Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards judgeÂ

From the Author

Times New Roman: How We Quit Our Jobs, Gave Away Our Stuff & Moved to Italy is a memoir of the nearly two years my husband and I lived in Rome, Italy, August 2001 -- May 2003. The title, Times New Roman, has two meanings. First, John and I, in effect, act as new Romans by transplanting ourselves and becoming inhabitants of Rome, at least for 21 months. Second, Times New Roman is a well-known font type, which represents my realized dream of becoming a published writer while living in Rome. In some instances, names were changed to protect the privacy of friends.Â

In preparation for my own relocation to Rome, I decided to purchase Martha's book with the hopes of gaining practical and applicable best practices. My copy is now highlighted from cover-to-cover with many of her thoughts and observations! Not only is this 'journal' a useful guide it's a delightful retelling that shares the charming, the surprising, the not-what-you-might-think, and many well-earned suggestions. For those of us that might be making this life-change later in their lives, without an Italian job assignment to fall into, and with limited financial resources, this book will be a comfort. Martha and John truly managed this transition from square one making an experience of a lifetime a possible and sincerely memorable one. I'm inspired!

Martha Miller makes Italy come alive in this vivid, beautifully written memoir. We all have dreams, but Miller turns hers into an exciting reality when she and her new husband move to Italy for two years. I felt that I was experiencing the culture, food, fashion, and people along with her and I loved every minute of it. If you love Italy or you want to understand how people really do make their dreams come true or you want to be transported into a new world, this book is for you. I didn't want their adventure to end and neither will you.

I very much enjoyed reading this book! It was well written yet easy to read! I truly felt the life Martha lived while in Italy, and sympathized (and laughed) with her struggles and joys. I love that she shared such personal aspects of her life and made the reader feel as though they were right there with her!

Times New Roman is warm and wonderful with a personal touch that feels like the author is sitting and chatting with you over a steamy-hot cappuccino. While the book cover 2 years, the story unfolds in a series of fun, charming vignettes each with their own sense of place and time that made me smile. If you're thinking about traveling to Rome and want some cute "insider" secrets – this book's for you!

This is WONDERFUL!!! Really enjoyable. Her writing style is so welcoming and friendly and she writes about something that many of us have dreamed of doing at one time or another. This is really worth the money and your time.Highly Recommend this book!

Fun and light read about having the courage to trek to another country and become immersed in the lifestyle. The chapters were short and engaging and drew me in to keep reading. An inspiration about the many rewards that can come from stepping outside of our comfort zone.

Loved this book. Buy it. Expeeience the expat life vicariously through the author. You will want to kick up your heels and go to Italy.

Martha Miller was able to capture and convey to the readers the essence of daily living in the city of Roma (Rome), Italia (Italy). Martha writes as if she is talking to you and taking you for a stroll in the eternal city. When I reached the last chapter I was a little disappointed and so I went back to the first chapter and enjoyed it all over again. Grazie mille Martha for the lovely passeggiata in Rome!Franco Rotondi

Review

“In One More Step, Rachel Wojo gives permission to women all over the world to grieve, ache, and experience sadness while holding tight to their faith. It’s refreshing to find a sister of the soul who doesn’t offer platitudes but instead offers real life experience tangled in hope.” —Suzanne Eller, international speaker, blogger, and author of numerous books including The Mended Heart “We’ve all had situations in our lives where we just couldn’t see how we’d make it through another day. With this book, you’ll be encouraged and lifted up by Rachel, a friend who understands how to seek God’s strength and healing in the midst of the pain!” —Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times best-selling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries “This book is both personal and practical. Like our heavenly Father, Rachel is fluent in the language of pain. Anyone who has struggled or is struggling will find healing and hope on each page.” —Jon Weece, senior pastor and lead follower at Southland Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky, and author of Jesus Prom “When you sit across from Rachel in real life and look in her eyes, you see a woman who wants nothing more than to please and know Jesus and give him away. Her passion for God is as contagious as it is sincere and no doubt built from much time in the trenches of suffering with him.” —Jennie Allen, founder and CEO of IF:Gathering, author of Restless and Anything “If your life circumstances have ever left you full of fear, dread, or worry, then this book is for you. Rachel is the friend who has been through life’s cruel wringer and knows exactly how you feel. She gently shows you how to let God pull you out of the muck of life and point you back in the right—and righteous—direction. Encouraging and practical. This will be my new go-to book for hurting friends.” —Karen Ehman, New York Times best-selling author and Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker “Just when you think you can’t go on, a friend who’s been there offers you her hand. Rachel Wojo is a rare, beautiful writer who gets to the heart of the matter. In One More Step, Rachel writes honestly about pain but points to the beauty God wants to bring out of the broken places in our lives.” —Joanna Weaver, author of Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World “Rachel Wojo’s personal journey, insights from her walk with Jesus, and hope-filled words make One More Step an encouraging guide for every heart when life’s path gets rough.” —Holley Gerth, best-selling author of You’re Going to Be Okay and What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days “Where do you turn when life simply feels too difficult to even keep going? Told with both wisdom and honesty, Rachel’s story is equal parts heart-wrenching and encouraging. In the end, she offers a strong dose of hope for the hopeless and the strength to take just one more step.” —Ruth Soukup, New York Times best-selling author of Living Well, Spending Less “Rachel combines powerful biblical truth with very real everyday life. If you’re looking for help to simply take the next step, you will find it here.” —Sheila Walsh, author of Five Minutes with Jesus

Possibly because Rachel Wojo's life journey has given her so many varied challenges, possibly because you can hear her voice in her writing, possibly because God just placed her in this authorship position- this book cries out to the heart of every woman who has grappled with life's daily circumstances. I was no different. I tasted of a life totally blessed by a loving church, a godly family, living at a Christian Camp, teaching Sunday School, playing organ, serving on the mission field and seeing God daily work in my life. I have those memorials hanging on my wall and in scrapbooks telling of God's mighty work and love for me through the opportunities He afforded me. But when confronted with leaving the principalship job I loved, to become a caregiver in our home for my parents - one with Parkinson's and the other blind and deaf, I met "the job I didn't sign up for". I knew it was a calling, but like Moses, I did not feel prepared. In my mind this was for a short time, but in God's timing I am now on year nine. This short, easy readable book, pushes you to confront where you truly find satisfaction, who you are truly serving, whether your dreams are God's better plan, and the very basis for your strength to take one more step. God has given me "a new story." Thank you, Rachel for writing from the heart, for sharing your struggles and your JOYs! The added bonus of the videos online and the printable Stepping Stones Journal make this book a treasure and one of those gifts in the DESERT! Readers will read and reread this book for newly discovered gems of wisdom in those hard times.

This book is the best I have read ever (next to the Bible!) I have read many books in this genre, but Rachel's passion and genuine faith really shines brightest through her gifted ability to write about her life experiences (many very hard and painful) and how God love and goodness help her and others by taking just "One More Step." Through excerpts of her favorite hymns, a very helpful study guide with thoughtful and deep thought-provoking questions and a writing style that is filled with such love and grace Rachel has written a beautiful life giving book that points to God's glorious kingdom! This is a book you will want to have with you always...right next to your Bible, a cup of coffee, favorite chocolates and kleenex as you won't get through it without tears at some point. This book has helped me so much to deal with so many hard issues in my life and has helped pave the way to free me from the burden I have been carrying. What a beautiful heart Rachel has sharing such personal trial and heartbreak and the freedom she has found through the steps she has taken to live life in spite of really hard circumstances, one at a time, while honoring and trusting God. I am forever blessed by her gift of writing and sharing this book!

Rachel writes about her life experiences and how she managed to get through them. This is a book about true life experiences and is well written and very emotionally charged. It is a great read for everyone whether they've had times of grief, loss or they want to read about a wonderful family who loves God and each other. She relates her difficulties going through a divorce, a terminal diagnosis for her oldest daughter and how she coped with the loss. There are also exercises and Bible verses to help you along the way. Definitely worth purchasing this great book from an awesome author! There is also a free journal that you can download from Rachel's website to aid you as you go through the book.

This book was part of a Bible Study I participated in on Rachel Wojo's blog. It honestly could not have come at a better time for me to read. This book is a powerful read if you are going through tough times, or if your faith and trust in the Lord is wavering. At the end of each chapter Rachel offers 2 sections to help move you forward, one is called "Pillars of Truth to Lean On", which is Bible scripture specifically relating the chapter you just read. The second section is called "Stepping Stone", which offers a few things to do to dig deeper into that chapter.I highly recommend this book for anyone who is facing or has faced a life struggle. Regardless of your situation, this book will help you find a way to take one more step.

Actually 4 1/2 stars! I likes it and appreciate it, but considering it hits on those hard times, which many of us have lived thorugh and will continue to experience, it's hard to say you love it, when it brings to mind the times of our lives. One More Step is one of those books everyone needs, if not now maybe some time in your life when the chips are down and down and down. We all go through trying times. Rachel reminds us that we can make it through, maybe not with panache, aplomb, Queenly Calm. but we can make it! And it's okay if we fall apart, we don't have to be perfect, everyone needs a little help now and then BUT we need to keep going, keep believing and keep trusting Him! Something she helps us to see in this book.We need to remember God is up there, that He is for us and That "I can do ALL things though Christ who strengthens me!"

I have purchased a copy to share with my family and friends. This book was one I was blessed to be chosen to preview. God was there talking to me as I read this wonderful book. My own copy is much loved; has marks of tears and all my notes; for He sent me this book when I needed to be able to take " One more step." All I wanted to do instead was to curl up and go to sleep and never awaken again. He used Rachel's words to lift me up so "I could walk the stormy sea," for He was with me in this book and it was a gift to me exactly when I needed it. Please read it to be encouraged, to inspire you, for it will help you to see that you are never alone.

This was a good story. It was such that you wanted to finish so as to find out how it would end.

to much $ for a short story

What a dramatic beginning for this book! We are placed in a courtroom where a man is being sentenced for murder. On the dock, the accused man proclaims his innocence and asks his friend in the courtroom take care of his sister. After exacting this promise, the accused then drinks from a vial and keels over dead. After a year of mourning has passed, this friend, Lord Sharpe, as well as a kindly marquess and marchioness, come to town to support this sister, Julianna, in a London season. Lord Sharpe has been troubled by the brother’s claim of innocence and is not quite willing to believe that his former friend is guilty. Will Lord Sharpe figure out the correct murderer who framed his friend? Will he fall for Julianna himself or help her to wed another man?I found the character of Lord Sharpe to be an interesting one. He is not portrayed as the typical Regency romance hero, who can definitely be a little touchy-feely to appeal to modern readers. Instead, he is portrayed as stiff and formal at first, bringing to mind Mr. Darcy (although he is more willing to dance!). He’s one of the reasons I think the book should have been longer. It would have been more appropriate for him to gradually become more comfortable in Julianna's presence, and a longer book would have been needed for his character to relax. For a novella, this book has some surprising twists and turns. In fact, that’s the second reason why I think the book should have been expanded: to give more insight into thoughts, emotions, and events of the story.I thought it odd that states that it takes place in “Nineteenth century, England” while the cover states it is a Regency; why not be specific if you are as on-point as Regency? The Regency period is a very narrow timeframe in English history and certainly not nearly as vague as the 19th century! There are some issues with grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Surprisingly, even a character's name was misspelled. Sometimes the baron is either referred to as Baron Holland or Baron Hollard. There are some issues with word choice as well, as sometimes the same or similar words were used right next to each other.Despite all that, this is a relatively well written short Regency suspense.I did receive an advance review copy, but this did not affect my review.

Francis Newton was the second son of a baron, on trial for murder. The verdict was that Francis was to be spared the gallows, but he would be incarcerated for a time and would never be able to return to society. But before everyone cleared out, Francis yelled his protest of the verdict and said that he was innocent, someone had set used him to take the blame. He turned to his former friend Thomas, Viscount Sharpe, and again said he was innocent – even though Thomas was the one who had found him standing over a body and holding a bloody knife. He asked him to find out why he was set up. He also asked him to care for his sister who would shamed by this. Although Francis had brothers, he knew they would not take care of her. Thomas gave his word and Francis pulled out a vial of poison and drank it in front of everyone, still declaring his innocence.Thomas was in shock and just stood there. A kindly older gentleman told him he should leave, commended him for agreeing to care for Francis’ sister, and told him to come see him when the mourning year was over. He was Marquess of Thurston and would make sure Julianna was not barred from social events since he had some influence over the ‘beau monde’. He also mentioned that he did not feel Mr. Newton was truly guilty; something more was going on. True to his word, as soon as Julianna arrived in London, the Marchioness of Thurston, wife of the Marquess, had been sent to meet with Julianna as her sponsor. She had arranged for several dresses for Julianna, introduced her, and made Julianna ready for her Season in London. At the ball, Thomas signed Julianna’s dance card and asked Lady Thurston if he could take Miss Newton to meet some acquaintances. As they walked, Julianna reprimanded him for not asking her first, as she did not wish to be spoken of as if she were not there. Suddenly a bearded man knocked into them hard enough that Thomas fell to the floor. Since all were unhurt, the man walked away without waiting for an introduction. So Thomas introduced Julianna to his acquaintances and she gained several more dance partners. While she danced with Lord Borden, he sat down and heard something crinkle in his pocket. It was a note stating Newton was innocent and there was more at stake than he knew! When Julianna returned to him, he showed the note to her and she immediately realized the bearded man must have slipped it in Thomas’ pocket! But why? Who was he?Henry came into the drawing room, angrily asking why Julianna had to always be in his way. He was arrogant, cruel, and hateful to her, demanding she leave “his” house and telling her he never cared for any of his family members. In the midst of the fight, Thomas arrived and intended to take her to Lady Thurston for the remainder of her stay. But she refused and said she would avoid Henry. Lord Borden asked to call on her, and that would keep her out of Henry’s way. Her only regret was that she was beginning to wish it was Thomas who was courting her.Thomas arrived the next day and told the butler he would wait until Lord Borden left. He approaching the drawing room’s slightly open door and heard laughter. But instead of being glad their relationship was proceeding well and he would likely be freed of taking care of her, he felt irritated and wanted to interrupt them! She would be gone from his life, his promise to Francis completed -- and a deep sense of disappointment overwhelmed him! Lord Borden stepped out and greeted Thomas. As they talked, Borden confided that he was going for the dowry! The lady herself held no interest for him! His courtship was merely a game to him to get the money for himself! As Thomas joined Julianna, he could not bring himself to tell her the truth about Borden’s intentions. Would she find out in time to refuse the man’s marriage offer? Would Thomas give any thought to the unusual feelings that were confusing him? And would he and Julianna discover who had given him the note and who had set up her brother as a murderer and thief? This was such a good story! The mystery was well done and kept the reader on edge. In addition, we see Thomas and Julianna beginning to warm to the other while time runs out as Lord Borden pursues his courtship. Such an exciting story line, and many directions it can take! The twists and turns have only just begun as the hunt for the true murderer heats up! Don’t miss this one – it’s awesome!

I loved this story by Joyce Alec. Kept me captivated until the end!Julianna is in a very difficult situation after her brother Francis is accused of murder. He declares himself innocent and then commits suicide. But Francis seeks Thomas help before his death asking him to help out his sister. And he does, with the help of a Marquis and a Marchioness that take Julianna under their wing. But things get very complicated and dangerous, and they both must risk their lives to uncover the truth surrounding Francis death. Will they survive and will their love survive too? This was a sweet and clean romance full of suspense and intrigue. I was totally captivated. The characters were relatable and endearing too!I totally recommend this book to lovers of the Regency romance!I received a complimentary copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest and unbiased review.

I pre-ordered this as soon as I knew it was being published, all on the strength of The Martian, which I loved. So now I can tell you that Sophomore Slump is a real thing. Artemis isn't a bad book, it's just not a great book. I'm not sure it's always a good book, but I'm up and down about that.As I was beginning it, The Housemate read me a highly critical review by the AV Club. Most of the review was about how the main character didn't feel like a woman. I felt that was relatively unimportant, that gender wasn't an issue in the story as far as I'd read, and honestly I still feel that way. Weir could have made his protagonist male and changed almost nothing about the narrative. Had this book been about women's issues, I might have felt short-changed, but as it is, this is a pretty standard thriller, and representation is way down on the list of things one expects from this genre. However, irony is ironic. When I picked the book up again after hearing the review, I found that it had been close to being right. Not spot-on, just close. None of the characters had any depth for me, mostly they were interchangeable plot devices. Again, that's standard fare in the genre, so I'm willing to shrug and let it go in spite of the fact that I know Weir can create dimensional characters. But what flummoxed me was that the action sequences were so dull. They were highly technical, and where that worked in The Martian, it does not work here.I found myself racing through those parts to get to the human interactions, which if they didn't have the depth I could have hoped for, were at least more interesting than all the tech stuff. I found myself thinking that someone told Weir that "people loved all that technical stuff in The Martian, so maybe you should do it again, and do more of it." Yeah that worked when it was a single man against the elements and ultimately against technology. But here? It's kind of flat. At least that's how it felt to me.So in the end, while I enjoyed parts of it, those parts proved greater than the whole, and I can't be super enthusiastic the way I was about The Martian. That makes me sad. It doesn't mean I won't read the next thing Andy Weir publishes, but I'm not going to be so quick to pre-order it next time.

At heart there's a fun little romp around a hypothetical moon base and a criminal conspiracy. That part is not so bad.My beefs with the novel are threefold:* The author cannot write a convincing woman, at least not from the woman's own perspective. I've never been a woman, but I have been a teenage boy, and I am pretty sure that adult, straight women spend less time thinking about breasts than a teenage boy. The narrator is obsessed.* The libertarian nuttery runs deep in this sucker. Laws against flammable materials are zealously enforced, but pedophilia is perfectly legal, selling drugs to minors is perfectly legal, and unions are basically just thugs who beat you up if you work without the union. (And yet, for some reason, the most skilled workers refuse to join the unions? because it would mean being paid less? who would join a union to make less money?)* Lastly, the economy makes no sense whatsoever. They use a company scrip for currency (in order to evade all the evil banksters on earth!), and the company scrip is "grams safely landed on the moon." Apparently a delivery boy makes 12,000 grams a month. A beer costs about 25 grams. At one point they disclose that a gram is roughly 1/6th of a dollar. Meanwhile, in the real world, it costs about $13 to get a single gram of material into LEO, to say nothing of a transfer to, or soft landing on, the moon. The entire plot hinges on exporting bulk fiberoptic cable from the moon to the earth at a fabulous profit, somehow? I don't know if the author has ever handled fiber optic cabling. It's not lightweight stuff.

Everyone has to make a living somehow. Even on the moon.Jazz Bashara grew up in Artemis, the moon's only human colony. Tourists flock there for the chance to spend their life's savings on a guided tour of the lunar surface-- which involves wondering about in a high tech hamster ball-- and sampling the local delicacy known as Gunk, a flavored algae no one voluntarily eats a second time. But for the full time residents, Artemis is a small town with the same problems as any community. It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. And everyone knows Jazz Bashara is up to no good.Jazz has a brilliant mind, but saw more fit to rebel against her traditional Muslim father than to apply it to her future. At 26, she finds herself the lunar equivalent of an errand girl, living in an apartment the literal size of a coffin, and smuggling contraband from earth just to make ends meet. She dreams of the day she'll have a home she can stand up in, and access to non-communal bathroom, but Artemis is expensive. There's a sharp divide between the haves and have-nots: those who can afford to have an earth standard of living shipped into city and those at the mercy of the natural restrictions of living on the moon.So when one of the wealthiest haves, a sketchy businessman who employs Jazz's smuggling skills on the regular, offers her a huge sum to take out a competing business, she takes him up on it. What starts as a complicated, but doable, task quickly spirals out of control. Jazz soon finds herself in the cross hairs of some powerful enemies and discovers Artemis's dirty secrets.Any expectations I had for this book were purely speculative, because, unlike most of the rest of the world, I have not read The Martian or seen the movie. That said, I was surprised 1/3 of the way through to realize I was reading a lightweight heist novel with some heavy handed commentary on wealth inequality. Yes, it's set on the moon, and the author does not let you forget it, but it's the backdrop to the real issue: Jazz needs money. One of the largest problems of this book is Jazz herself. She's supposed to be a grown woman, but she narrates like a teenage boy. She's as obsessed with her sex life as everyone else in Artemis seems to be, and I have to wonder if author Andy Weir has ever met a woman before. She's also really chatty and familiar with the audience in a way that grates over time:"Getting the contraband to Artemis... well, that's another story. More on that later.""Okay, you can stop pretending you know what a niqab is."The whole book has a very YA vibe to it. It's lightweight and the heist gets a bit ridiculous. I mean, they plan out every detail on an ipad-like device that their enemies have proven to be able to hack, but I digress. Between chapters, we get letters between Jazz and her earth penpal that date back to when they are children, but this has little relevance to the story at large and often feels like filler. And we get moments that read like a bad cable movie:"He's right, Dad. I am an jerk. But Artemis needs a jerk right now and I got drafted."Artemis has it's moments. It's fast paced and often fun. The descriptions of the moon colony, and what life might be like were anyone to attempt settling it, are interesting. But if you're expecting anything more of this than a forgettable caper tale, you might be disappointed.
