I enjoyed the book and have been a fan of the author for a long time. I took off a star because the book really doesn't match the title. In fact, the book was much more about the author's anecdotal experiences than it was about either convincing or identifying atheist tendencies in the reader. The author has certainly led a colorful life, and has been extraordinarily lucky, and so being a fan I found it interesting to learn more about him. If you were not already familiar with, and interested in, Penn & Teller as famous magicians, you might not find the book interesting enough to get past the foul language, weird behavior, and a lot of general crass childishness written in, sometimes, excruciating detail.As a book on general atheism, I would not recommend it at all. There are some cute quotes and some discussion of why Penn is himself an atheist, but between all that the book is more about Penn himself and his personal anecdotes. I'm not even sure why he went this direction as he could have removed a very small amount of the book and sold it as "Penn's thoughts and stupid human tricks." I probably would have bought it anyway...
"You don't have to be very smart, fast, or funny to be an atheist. You don't have to be well educated. Being an atheist is simply saying, 'I don't know'."--Loc 80GOD NO! is god awful. Especially the first half, or so, where Jillette seems hell-bent to out 'Howard-Stern' Howard Stern with juvenile raunch. Way too much information.The second half is better--the 'Afterword' is very much worth reading--but still there's far too much recourse to too vulgar imagery.Penn Jillette has long been an admired champion of individual liberty, with much to offer on the subject. Packaging his good ideas in sleaze, however, is distracting and cheapens the product.Recommendation: Read, instead, Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Shermer, Jacoby, Ali, Ingersoll, Mencken, Twain, Barnum, Hayek, Ringer, Randi, Rothbard, or Rand. Their writings may tend toward the less visceral--but at least you won't get your metaphorical face rubbed in metaphorical body fluids.(NB: If by chance you are, or think like, a hormonal fourteen year old boy, feel free to disregard this recommendation--but read those other folks, too.)"There's a world of safety in doubt. I was disappointed in this. I've always been a fan of Penn Jillette, but it seems like he threw together a bunch of random thoughts and laced it with a lot of explicit sex talk in an effort to be hip.
The reason I am giving this book a 2 star rating is because it is not really even about religion, of course religion and atheism are mentioned throughout the book, it is not a book about religion or atheism, its more of a humorous/auto-bio type book. If you're a fan of Penn Jillette you should have no problem enjoying this book. However if you are expecting a book that is primarily focused on religion/atheism, this is not the book for you. That being said its still a pretty good read, some very interesting stories from Penn's life in this book.
First, a warning. If you are a frail lady librarian from the heartland, are of a certain age, or find strong language intolerable, you won't get past the Tourette's-like frequency of Jillette's &*#%s.That being said, Penn Jillete has an eye for a humorous line, and it doesn't get much funnier than his thoughts on the power (or impotence) of religion. He takes on God (or as he consistently renders it, god) and church alike as a problem in today's society, and isn't shy about telling us why he feels neither has a place in our lives.Much of the book is anecdotal in the extreme: we learn why his mother wasn't religious, and what his children do for the holiday season that falls at the end of the calendar year. A supremely moving story about the death of his mother provides an insight into a secular ceremony to replace a funeral service. Another hilarious tale shows us the power of breaking religious food laws, as he and Teller introduce an ex-Jew to a bacon cheeseburger at a restaurant named "Traif".I enjoyed it thoroughly, mostly while "revering the porcelain god", but my simple testimony shouldn't sway you. Look inside, read a page or two and make up your own mind whether to buy in. After all, that's what Jillette is asking us to do with the various holy books we are heir to.Can I get an Amen?
I read the book over a few days and was amazed that Penn and I looked at things so much alike. It's just stories, most are interesting to say the least and the rest caused me to laugh out loud several times. Its been awhile since a non-fiction book caused me to LOL. I'll probably re-read it at some point. I feel like I want to meet the guy after reading his book, he tells it like it is! Now i think I'm an atheist too and while i felt that way before I never really gave it a lot of thought. I say thanks to Penn for being so open about the subject. I'm now writing my own novel called "Santa Claus No!" j/k :-)
I purchased this book because I figured I was going to be amused by stories of awkwardness the author, Penn Jillete, experienced for being an atheist. Instead, it's a series of tales with lots of name-dropping of people I'm supposed to know. I know some of the people he mentions, but I don't think he "being friends with Joe Doe" is of any relevance for anything. Also, a lot of stories about women he slept with, and a lot about his career. I guess the book must be interesting for one who is a fan or watches his show, maybe if I ever watched I'd enjoy the book. But I almost gave up on it because also I found him sexist and sometimes offensive to women (like when he says he met someone hot who is 'too crazy to f...'). I mildly enjoyed the stories about his sister not telling on him if he was the unnabomber, and the one about the hair blow dryer. But that's it for me. I won't read it again.

Your humble reviewer is devoted fan of Stephen King (1947-) the most famous novelist in America. King is also noted for his ability to spin a good yarn in the short story genre. Skeleton Crew (strangely there is no story in this collection that is called Skeleton Crew!) contains over twenty stories. All of them are good but the ones listed below are my favorite.The Mist-The longest story in the book. A video retelling of the tale is now showing on the Spike network. One Maine morning a mist invades a beautiful lakeside area. The first person narrator's wife urges him to go to the grocery to stock up but on his arrival he discovers that dinosaurs have invaded the market! This tale reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds . It has an apocalyptic theme and is quite scary.Mrs Todd's Shortcut tells the enchanting story of a lovely woman who resembles the ancient goddess Diana on her auto jaunts. A romantic story with great descriptions of a New England October.The Man Who Who Would Not Shake Hands-Tragedy following a car wreck in distant India. Every time the chief protagonist of this tale shakes hands with someone they die!Beachworld-A science fiction yarn about a spaceship trapped on a planet that is nothing but sand dunes!Nona-A bloody tale told by a serial killer who is insaneSurvivor Tale-A grisly story of an unethical medical doctor stranded on a forbidding island after his boat sinks. Not for the queasy among us!The Jaunt-A futuristic tale of mind travel from Earth to Mars.The Raft-Four college students decide to go swimming from a raft in a lonely Maine lake before being confronting by a horrible creature that eats them!The Reaper's Image-An early short story by King in which the image of the grim reaper appears on an expensive old mirror. Light and entertaining reading.
I read these stories back in the 1980's when book first released and purchased this one to re-read. Whatever one may say about Steven King's uneven writing from book to book, he is arguable better at the short story format than almost anyone writing today. When he is good, his characterizations are outstanding-he never fails to make you care about the people in his stories and most are well-drawn enough to be more than memorable.If you haven't read them I particularly recommend the novella "The Mist" and the incredible short stories "Nona", "The Reach" (King won awards for it), and "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut.A wide variety of plots and moods in these tales-CHECK IT OUT!
First of all, I am an absolute fan of Stephen King. With that out the way, I understand not every single story is going to be a stroke of phenomenal genius. This collection didnt captivate me as well as most of his novels do. The last two stories were the only ones that left an impression on me. As I have said before, I am an avid reader of all things paranormal and macabre. From what I have read, most of these stories weren't very well thought through, might have seemed rushed? Or possibly beginner stories? Sorry, I am not one to do research of any authors like that. I base my opinions off of their ability to take hold of my imagination, as I have an expansive imagination, and when reading, it is like watching a movie. It doesn't take away from previous novels and stories I have read from him. He does have an uncanny ability to draw you in. But this collection did not impress me. Still love you Mr. King!!
Reading Skeleton Crew slowly for over a year now, using it as a bridge between various other novels and such to help with my SK addiction, I can say Skeleton Crew serves as possibly the best sampling of Stephen King considering the diversity and length it gives, all for under $10. The collection features a full novel, nineteen short stories, and even a couple poems to mix things up. One can see that this really does include so much of the best from SK when so many of these stories later ended up being adapted into TV show episodes or even movies.Some notables include...The headlining feature of Skeleton Crew is certainly The Mist, which stands as one of his fan favorites, and even though it's shorter then most of his novels, he's able to still deliver on a great balance between tension, action, and character-development better than most of his 700+page novels. This story alone almost makes it worth the price, yet it only takes up a quarter of the collection.As many other reviewers note, Cain Rose Up sticks out awkwardly as a too simple and too violent story of a school shooting. It feels like it should actually be the end of a much more complex and interesting story (like Rage).The Jaunt is probably my favorite out of the whole collection for it's delivery on a interesting idea, and the resulting payoff at the end, it's also cool to read one from SK that delves into some fun sci-fi aspects. This whole story can be read online for free, so if nothing else, at least do that.The premise for Word Processor of the Gods is awesome enough, a homemade computer that is able to create anything into existence that is typed into it. However, I feel that this could've been made into something much bigger and better then it is, yet still stands as a good read.Nona felt the most like a SK story with a near excessive amount of characters that all felt like they should be part of a bigger story (which is why most of them later show up in other stories set in the same town). It still serves as a good read, especially if recently reading Body or Hearts in Atlantis.The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet takes some time to build up speed into a great disturbing yet subtlety comedic story. It's one of the longer and last stories in the collection and along with The Reach it's a great note to end on.Overall, I would recommend this collection for any SK fan, as it features many of his most popular and memorable works (especially in terms of works that are not full novels) might even be the best place for a newcomer of Stephen King to start.
