I really like the "Let's Read and Find out Science 2" series. These are great science books for elementary school and they are perfect for my first grader. They use familiar examples to introduce basic scientific concepts in a simple but fun way. They are interesting for both kids and adults. I have found them to be a valuable tool to teach these concepts to my kids.This book about the sun and its impact on the seasons is really fun. The diagrams are very well done.
This is very understandable for young children. My six year old grandson is very interested in the solar system and this explains well as to how it affects the seasons of the year.
We used this book to discuss the science behind season changes and Winter Solstice with our five year old and his homeschool coop group. The book does a fabulous job of putting concepts into language that kids understand without watering down the information too much. The pictures and diagrams are great for visual learners as well!
Our three-year-old granddaughter loved this book. She's really interested in science, and I've bought her a number of books from this series. All are excellent.

I bought this because I make maps as part of my job. I'd like to learn how to make better ones and this book had some helpful tips, especially when it comes to making maps for people who are color blind. Something that never occurred to me. Many of the examples are nice, text placement, text size, fonts, colors, etc. Overall, it's a nice addition to my library and I consult it on occasion when I need to.
I love this book. I have been a GIS user for 10 years and really only came upon this book last year. It really helped me to improve my maps through thorough explanation of methods of map development and great examples. It didn't take me long to get through the book, but the information was valuable: clear and concise. It gave me changes I could implement the very next day at work- and I did. I wish I had found this book 10 years ago.
Got a nice new version and am really enjoying it. Got it for class, but it is a book I might use in my career as well.
This GIS cartography book comes with lots of pictures and the font is easy to read. No issues regarding shipping from the seller.

This book will be mostly pretty basic for anyone who is trained as a designer since it relies on standard design methodologies to display map information (as it should!). I thought that this book was very well illustrated and well written and I enjoyed having it on-hand for a work project.
This is an older addition, but this is a great reference book.

If you want quick and dirty estimations this is a good book to use. A lot of the equations in the book are derived using a lot of assuming and estimating. My professor calls them "canned equations". Take Power for example: W = Tn / 5252. That 5252 was the result of dividing 2pi by 33000. As a result your answers would be slightly off, but it's ok. Just make sure to use a factor of safety when you're designing something in real life.Some annoying things about this book:-It spends too much time covering prereq materials. It wastes too much space briefly covering mechanics of materials and material science.-It makes assumptions out of nowhere with no rationale as to why. The author just cites a book that he read and just says to use this coefficient and account for its effect in order to solve the problem. That gets super frustrating when you're trying to figure things out for the first time.
My teacher designed for Boeing for 30 plus years and had a hard time understanding this book. A lot of explanation is continually left out on many concepts. It is vague and ambiguous in many ways! My teacher recommended "Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design" which was a little more clear on many of the concepts.
This is a textbook for mechanical engineering design and also a reference book for practicing mechanical engineers. It is assumed that the reader has had courses in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, and material science. In other words, it is assumed you are the equivalent of at least a junior undergraduate in mechanical engineering.The first section of the book functions as a fast-paced review of the aforementioned prerequisites. Don't expect elementary straight numerical problems even in the introductory section. The author gets down to business immediately with example problems that involve actual mechanical devices. The example problem solutions are excellent with separate solution sections labeled "Known","Find", "Schematic and given data", "Assumptions", "Analysis", and "Comment". Each chapter has solutions to a few of the many exercises. Of particular interest in section one is chapter 8,"Fatigue", and chapter 9, "Surface Damage". Chapter 8 is important because it contains a simplified, condensed, and introductory version of fatigue design and fatigue crack growth, and is probably going to be new material for many readers. Chapter 9 deals with the various kinds of surface deterioration in machine components. This is important because more machine parts fail because of surface damage than from actual breakage.Part two of the book is concerned with the application of the fundamentals of mechanical engineering to specific machine components. In practice, problems involving the design, analysis, or application of machine members can seldom be solved by applying the fundamentals alone. Also, there is seldom just one right answer. This second section of the book gives the engineer exposure with these types of problems. Each chapter in this section deals with design issues in particular types of mechanical devices - springs, gears, bearings, clutches, brakes, etc. The final chapter of the section is a case study of the first commercially successful automotive automatic transmission, drawing on the knowledge of all of the individual devices studied in previous chapters of part two.The updates to this fourth edition versus the third edition are:* Chapter 1 has some new material including a hierarchy of design that sets design guidelines for minimizing risk as well as the documenting of a new product.* Section 3.14 "Engineering Material Selection Process" is new material.* Section 6.4 on "Fracture Mechanics - Applications" has been expanded.* There are two new sections in Chapter 8 entitled "Fatigue Crack Growth" and "General Approach for Fatigue Design".* There is more reference to various websites in this edition.* Both the example and homework problems have been revised.The third and previous edition of this book is only two years older than the current fourth edition, and actually contains about 100 pages more material than the fourth edition. Given the high cost of the fourth edition, and the fact that the third edition can be obtained used rather inexpensively, you might want to consider getting the third edition of this book if you do not consider this list of new features essential. A good companion to this book is the latest edition of "Machinery's Handbook" since it has equations and tables in a very concise format. However, I highly recommend you get a copy of either the third or fourth edition of this book too. It has a wealth of material on mechanical design, and if you are already a mechanical engineer, it will make you fall in love with the discipline all over again.
This is a great book! It covers a lot of topics in a concise and easy to understand manner. This book has functioned as my toolbox for some time. I highly recommend it to any engineer that needs a reference book.If you are still in school get this book early. It might save you some headaches down the line.
This textbook is the main text assigned to the senior design class at my college for mechanical engineering. Very good book. However, The first half, maybe a little past half of the book is just a review of mechanics of materials and materials science. The first two chapters are a review of statics and a couple examples, maybe 3 on dynamics. I think this is good, but most students keep their dynamics, statics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, books to use as reference, so it feels like it is a waste of paper. In the machine component section of the book, the second "half", It covers, bolts and fasteners, welds, springs, bearings, gears, shafts, brakes and clutches, and the last chapter is on other machine components such as belts and chains and stuff like that. The chapter on welds is extremely brief to a point where it is almost useless, one is better off going to the library or bookstore to actually buy a good reference on welded joints. The chapter on bearings could use some expanding, it feels "rushed". And the last chapter is almost useless as well, it's almost like a tease. They mention interesting and very useful machine components but they offer little calculations for them, like the chain drives and the torque converter. Why bother mentioning it? It's not a reference, it's an actual machine design book. Another thing I found interesting is that for a couple of chapters and homework problems they refer you to information from websites online. Thing is, it is a book most would like to keep, but what five years from now? Will these web pages still be up? Overall it is a good book. But better books are out there.
Required textbook for a Machine Design course. Much more accessible than Shigley's (although that is apparently a classic textbook on Machine Design - I have both). Better explanations and seemingly more thorough on the applications side compared to Shigley's.

As a work for non specialists, "A Time to Die" is an excellent, well written, and thoroughly explained piece of journalism. It is written for laymen, yet does not condescend to people without a background in submarine operations. The K-141 'Kursk' sank on August 12, 2000 off northern Russia during a training exercise after an aged torpedo exploded in the bow of the boat, sinking the ship rapidly to the 350 foot deep seabed. 28 men survived in the aft of the ship and lived in a cold and dark environment for several days before being killed by a rapid flash fire.The elements that led to the tragedy are compelling. The Russian navy was (and is) in utter disrepair after the breakup of the USSR, and rescue submersibles were among the first budget cuts made. Only several days after the 'Kursk' sank was help from England and Norway solicited, due largely to national pride (and fear of espionage). The entire debacle happened only a few months into the Putin administration and proved to be a watershed in Russian politics.Moore tells the story from the viewpoint of the survivors, the would-be rescuers and the victim's families, with special emphasis on deteriorating Russian capabilities (and the preventable nature of the disaster) and the political forces that doomed the survivors to a sure death. Overall it is a superb telling of the salient points of the tragedy, its investigation, and aftermath. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book, particularly the pictures of 'Kursk' in drydock after the accident. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a general treatment of the technical side of the disaster and an in-depth covering of the political machinations involved.
The author appears to have taken great pains to insure the accuracy of his account of this tragic accident. The information is presented in a manner understandable to non-technically inclined readers. It offers a sympathetic view of the person's involved in the actual rescue efforts while not mincing words concerning the culpability of those whose decisions and actions hindered the rescue efforts. Overall it is an excellent work covering one of the most tragic events of our time.
The book, itself, is written in such a way that even the most mechanically inept people can understand what, why, and how what happened happened, but those with a background in mechanics will find this book just as interesting, due to the little "nuggets" throughout the book that prove interesting to those with a working knowledge of submarines. This IS a book that should be considered a "must read" if you want to know more about the incidents surrounding the doomed submarine.People with a background in history will also be interested in this book, because of the story BEHIND the scenes, so to speak... the story of how the "politicos" in Moscow tried to tamp down the disaster. That was what caught me by surprise the most... the fact that it seemed like this all happened in 1980's Russia, rather than the Russia of the 2000's. This IS just MY opinion, but Putin bungled the whole incident, and I didn't have a single nice thing to say about him after reading this book, but that's probably a discussion best had in a totally different forum.
. This telling really examines the story of the sinking of the Typhoon sub Kurst and the loss of all aboard. The pitiful state of the Russian military in the 90s is really the culprit responsible for the disaster and the inability to respond to the situation. Much of the book is a reconstruction of the events base on the evidence retrieved after the sub was raised. The incompetence and secrecy of the Russian system but eventually accountability was delivered to many of those responsible for this disaster but the real culprit was the desire to have a viable military without the money to actually do it safely.
Not sure what drew me to this book some 12 years after the event. Slowly the wheels of Russia started to turn and even slower acceptance of the realization that something was wrong. Help from Britain, Norway and the USA was initially declined by Russia due to distrust and the need to maintain secrecy. Meanwhile, men were dying horrible deaths in an impenetrable tomb some 360 feet below the surface of the Berents sea.Moore tells us about the families of the men receiving contradictory reports and deliberate stonewalling by the authorities. He also tells us how offers of help using far advanced equipment were viewed skeptically and declined for days by the higher ups in Moscow.Eventually, Norwegian and British divers got the hatch open on the Kursk and here the book, for me, became very gripping. Moore's writing does a wonderful job of putting you at the scene also, the writing puts you in the 9th compartment of the sub where the 23, who survived the catastrophic explosion, were huddled awaiting rescue.The book is written in laymen's terms and adequately details the events of a sad day for humanity as, undoubtedly, the value of Iron, steel, secrecy and politics were placed higher in value than the lives of men.

I don't like that it doesn't let me print from book. Some cites let you print a certain amount of pages from their online books. I had to copy text then print it. I normally print out the homework questions.

I am already a fan of the South Beach Diet and Dr Agatston's books, including The South Beach Diet Supercharged, because they helped me change my "diet" mentality and "couch potato" existence into an active lifestyle and a 65 lb. weight loss! I appreciate that he makes complicated subjects understandable and always provides a game plan. I was lucky to obtain an advance copy of The South Beach Wake-Up Call and was blown away by Dr. Agatston's ability to wake me up once again!With his new book Dr. Agatston provides a call to action that can truly change the way Americans think about their lifestyle choices and how those choices can impact their health. This is not a "diet" book, although it does re-state many of the South Beach Diet principles. It is a book that challenges the trade-off that many Americans have accepted: Our fast-food, sedentary way of life has contributed to two-thirds of American adults being overweight or obese and childhood obesity tripling in recent years. This is not a small problem considering the link between obesity and diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. The impact that these epidemics will have on our health-care system is enormous. Already our children are developing health problems not normally seen until individuals are in there 50s. That is scary stuff !Now don't panic, it is not all bad news. Dr. Agatston provides 7 major strategies to help us remold our lives for the better (and it doesn't all have to be all at once). For example, there is a chapter that talks about sitting down to home-cooked meals and enjoying food and family. We just started this last Sunday, when I made breakfast for everyone at home. We ended up sitting at the table for hours munching on my homemade waffles (from The South Beach Quick & Easy Cookbook) and eating our turkey bacon and fresh fruit!If you had asked me beforehand whether I had the time to do this, I probably would have said "No." But after being reminded of the benefits of the family dining table, we've decided to have these gatherings every week. We even have a "no paper zone" dining table declared so we always have our table ready.I had to laugh when I saw the strategy on de-cluttering your home. I have wanted to do this for years and have never been successful! Now I feel my family has the tools to get started. Dr. Agatston's chapter reminded me of how much energy is put into dealing with the clutter and how it can create a toxic environment in your life. We started to walk around, as a family, and take notes of what needs to be done. The plan is to tackle just one room every week. The nice thing about this is I can get out of being the "bad" guy because now it is Dr. Agatston who is saying: "clean up this mess." And as he also says, outward clutter is often a symptom of inner clutter, or emotional turmoil, and that is often what is preventing us from moving forward in so many aspects of our lives!While I already have many of the South Beach cookbooks, this one takes known superfoods and creates new recipes that give you a "one-two" punch for your money. What a fun and smart idea.The South Beach Wake Up Call is definitely a marvelous read, sprinkled with interviews from leading experts in areas like childhood obesity and sleep, and with successful dieters, Super Moms, and patients of Dr. Agatston's cardiology practice. The book helps us to understand the history of how we got into such a sorry state with our health and how we can change it. Perhaps the book's greatest contribution, however, is that it acts as a catalyst for bringing this important wake-up discussion forward with our families, our politicians, and our communities.
This book is a breath of fresh air. There are plenty of lose weight fast schemes, but no one mentions changing one's lifestyle. In our culture, it is always the quick fix that sells. I have lived in another country where people ate well but we're also active. I rarely ever saw an obese person. They regularly consumed sweet snacks and thick sauces in moderation. They didn't sit in front of the TV. They made time for physical activities. They didn't sit a lot.Dr. Agitation explains how our lifestyle is making us sick. Then he gives us seven strategies to change our lifestyle for the better. I gave this book five stars, because the book is well-written, resourceful, and true. Like his other books, this one gives the reader practical information about how to become healthier. He includes recipes and resources to make the changes that each individual and or family needs to make to become healthier, not just to lose weight. Most of us were not meant to survive on pharmaceutical products and their side effects. Preventive care is key, but some conditions can be reversed. And we get to eat! Be the first to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Be a leader. Read this book. Read it!

I see from the South Beach Wake-Up Call that I can be healthier and more fit by making additional incremental changes. Anything we do toward eating better and moving more is an improvement.The Wake-Up Call includes 7 Strategies for improving our lifestyle. Some of these are usually not included in lifestyle-changing strategies, e.g., Control the Clutter, Control your Mind. This is an area which will improve my life. Another is the previously mentioned, Sleep Better - Live Longer. Other strategies deal with food and exercise, meal planning, and the importance of sharing family time at meals.This is a Wake-Up Call I needed to read. Following its recommendations will help me improve my health and my wellbeing. It can do the same for you.

I started on South Beach in mid August and have lost 52 pounds. My b/p is running 110/70 without meds ( had to come off of them) Sugar went fron 120-130 range to 84!! I feel awesome! I go thru the bakery deli and never look twice. I know what withdrawal I will go thru if I indulge and it's just not worth it to me.
