I'm not very good at math and I really enjoyed this. About half way through, the specific proofs covered go over my head (darn Newton), so I had to skim those a little and just read the narrative. It's about 3/4 readable text and a fourth walking through theorems, about a third of which were mostly doable for me. It is not necessary to follow all the calculations to benefit greatly from this book and follow it. I learned a lot about how things are calculated; how math developed by person, place, and over time; and feel inspired to try my hand at learning math. This really helped me understand and appreciate the development of math and related scientific fields (which are related) and some brilliant thinkers behind the calculator. For example, find the square root of 3. I can punch this into Exel. These guys had to solve it by hand. I don't feel so "math dumb" now that I understand how some of these difficult calculations came about (which run VERY deep of course). The writing is clear, at a good pace, and interesting (even for someone who grew up hating and struggling with basic math).
I just recently began teaching Math to 7th, 8th, and 10th grades. I bought this book in order to gain further insights into the history, and personalities of mathematics in order to bring some of that to my classes. The book is very well written. To fully appreciate it, you should probably have at least a high school background in mathematics, but it's not so intense that you need college calculus in order to grasp the narrative. Dunham does a great job of telling the story of the mathematician, his life and challenges, how he came up with the theorem, the significance of the theorem, what happens in mathematics and the world because of the theorem (why is it significant), and then walks us thru the different theorems in enough detail so that you get a feel for the brilliance of the thought, but not so much that your eyes glaze over in boredom of getting lost in the numbers.I highly recommend it; it is exactly what the title and review say it is. A leisurely walk/journey through some of the truly remarkable mathematics in human history.
This is a wonderful book. People with a basic grasp of math who are open to the idea that math might be beautiful will be rewarded. But I have a PhD in math and thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned some things along the way. (Because math is taught very ahistorically, Chapter 1 was entirely unfamiliar to me).These are *not* "*The* Great Theorems of Mathematics," as the subtitle suggests, but they certainly are "Great Theorems of Mathematics." Most "Great Theorems" are too technical to be presented in a book of this sort, but Mr. Dunham has done a wonderful job selecting theorems that can be proved with a minimum of prerequisites. In some ways this is a more challenging task than choosing the "greatest" theorems.My main reservation is the fact that at times the proofs get more ponderous than necessary, and can wind up obscuring the simplicity and elegance of the mathematics. The most glaring example is the already-noted proof of Fermat's Little Theorem (p. 226-9). The proof is incomplete, and presented in a very obscure way. The key fact, that (a+b)^p = a^p + b^p (mod p) follows easily and beautifully from the binomial theorem, so a complete proof could be given quite straightforwardly. I had the sense that some of the other theorems could have been presented somewhat more cleanly as well.The story behind Bernoulli's proof of the divergence of the harmonic series is enjoyable, but Bernoulli's proof is complex and unmotivated. Happily Mr. Dunham presents the beautiful proof Nicole Oresme from the 14th century. It is superior to Bernoulli's in every way: shorter, more elegant, and more illuminating, since pursuing his line of thinking makes it clear that the series grows as the log of the number of terms. So it's hard to see why Bernoulli is getting high marks for this particular proof, though he is overall a towering figure in the history of mathematics.Really, all my complaints are nit-picking. This is a wonderful book.I do want to defend Mr. Dunham from one of the other reviews: Euclid can prove (in modern language) that the area of a circle divided by the radius squared is a constant, and he can prove that the circumference divided by the diameter is a constant. But Euclid didn't show that these are the *same* constant, and that is why Archimedes result can fairly be seen as "greater" than Euclid's. Not that those theorems of Euclid's were slouches by any means.
I'm still working through the theorems in the early part of the book. The only way you will gain anything from this book is to work out each step with the text as a companion. That is an enlightening experience in itself.I suppose it's a good thing it was published in 1990 so it can't include Andrew Wiles' 1996 proof of Fermat's most famous conjecture. There is NO way the mathematical layman could follow that!
This was a challenging book for me to read, but only because I don't have the education to be able to absorb all of the formulas and proofs presented. In fact many of the theorems required me to carefully read them so that I could understand them and their implications.That said, I think the content for the book was thoroughly researched and I enjoyed reading about the connections across centuries.I came away with an appreciation of the great mathematicians and admiration for their quest for truth. Mathematics do not have an emotional, political, religious, or artistic component. For the most part, mathematics advances have not been stimulated by the desire to solve practical problems. Ultimately however, our understanding of mathematics help to define truth in everyday life, from cereal box size and nutritional contents to paying income taxes.Though I would be hard pressed to explain any of the theorums, I did find the book inspirational. While most any mathematical relationship (like the ratio of a polygon within a circle) can be found with an internet search, it is fun to try to determine some of these on my own. That describes a great book: it stimulates you to think and expand your horizons long after you've read the last page.

I really like the "Let's Read and Find out Science 2" series. These are great science books for elementary school and they are perfect for my first grader. They use familiar examples to introduce basic scientific concepts in a simple but fun way. They are interesting for both kids and adults. I have found them to be a valuable tool to teach these concepts to my kids.This book about the sun and its impact on the seasons is really fun. The diagrams are very well done.
This is very understandable for young children. My six year old grandson is very interested in the solar system and this explains well as to how it affects the seasons of the year.
We used this book to discuss the science behind season changes and Winter Solstice with our five year old and his homeschool coop group. The book does a fabulous job of putting concepts into language that kids understand without watering down the information too much. The pictures and diagrams are great for visual learners as well!
Our three-year-old granddaughter loved this book. She's really interested in science, and I've bought her a number of books from this series. All are excellent.
All of the "Let's Read and Find Out" science book are a big hit in our house. This one is no different, and a welcome addition to our home school library.

I bought this because I make maps as part of my job. I'd like to learn how to make better ones and this book had some helpful tips, especially when it comes to making maps for people who are color blind. Something that never occurred to me. Many of the examples are nice, text placement, text size, fonts, colors, etc. Overall, it's a nice addition to my library and I consult it on occasion when I need to.
I love this book. I have been a GIS user for 10 years and really only came upon this book last year. It really helped me to improve my maps through thorough explanation of methods of map development and great examples. It didn't take me long to get through the book, but the information was valuable: clear and concise. It gave me changes I could implement the very next day at work- and I did. I wish I had found this book 10 years ago.
Got a nice new version and am really enjoying it. Got it for class, but it is a book I might use in my career as well.

This book will be mostly pretty basic for anyone who is trained as a designer since it relies on standard design methodologies to display map information (as it should!). I thought that this book was very well illustrated and well written and I enjoyed having it on-hand for a work project.
This is an older addition, but this is a great reference book.

If you want quick and dirty estimations this is a good book to use. A lot of the equations in the book are derived using a lot of assuming and estimating. My professor calls them "canned equations". Take Power for example: W = Tn / 5252. That 5252 was the result of dividing 2pi by 33000. As a result your answers would be slightly off, but it's ok. Just make sure to use a factor of safety when you're designing something in real life.Some annoying things about this book:-It spends too much time covering prereq materials. It wastes too much space briefly covering mechanics of materials and material science.-It makes assumptions out of nowhere with no rationale as to why. The author just cites a book that he read and just says to use this coefficient and account for its effect in order to solve the problem. That gets super frustrating when you're trying to figure things out for the first time.
My teacher designed for Boeing for 30 plus years and had a hard time understanding this book. A lot of explanation is continually left out on many concepts. It is vague and ambiguous in many ways! My teacher recommended "Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design" which was a little more clear on many of the concepts.
This is a textbook for mechanical engineering design and also a reference book for practicing mechanical engineers. It is assumed that the reader has had courses in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, and material science. In other words, it is assumed you are the equivalent of at least a junior undergraduate in mechanical engineering.The first section of the book functions as a fast-paced review of the aforementioned prerequisites. Don't expect elementary straight numerical problems even in the introductory section. The author gets down to business immediately with example problems that involve actual mechanical devices. The example problem solutions are excellent with separate solution sections labeled "Known","Find", "Schematic and given data", "Assumptions", "Analysis", and "Comment". Each chapter has solutions to a few of the many exercises. Of particular interest in section one is chapter 8,"Fatigue", and chapter 9, "Surface Damage". Chapter 8 is important because it contains a simplified, condensed, and introductory version of fatigue design and fatigue crack growth, and is probably going to be new material for many readers. Chapter 9 deals with the various kinds of surface deterioration in machine components. This is important because more machine parts fail because of surface damage than from actual breakage.Part two of the book is concerned with the application of the fundamentals of mechanical engineering to specific machine components. In practice, problems involving the design, analysis, or application of machine members can seldom be solved by applying the fundamentals alone. Also, there is seldom just one right answer. This second section of the book gives the engineer exposure with these types of problems. A good companion to this book is the latest edition of "Machinery's Handbook" since it has equations and tables in a very concise format. However, I highly recommend you get a copy of either the third or fourth edition of this book too. It has a wealth of material on mechanical design, and if you are already a mechanical engineer, it will make you fall in love with the discipline all over again.
This is a great book! It covers a lot of topics in a concise and easy to understand manner. This book has functioned as my toolbox for some time. I highly recommend it to any engineer that needs a reference book.If you are still in school get this book early. It might save you some headaches down the line.
This textbook is the main text assigned to the senior design class at my college for mechanical engineering. Very good book. However, The first half, maybe a little past half of the book is just a review of mechanics of materials and materials science. The first two chapters are a review of statics and a couple examples, maybe 3 on dynamics. I think this is good, but most students keep their dynamics, statics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, books to use as reference, so it feels like it is a waste of paper. In the machine component section of the book, the second "half", It covers, bolts and fasteners, welds, springs, bearings, gears, shafts, brakes and clutches, and the last chapter is on other machine components such as belts and chains and stuff like that. The chapter on welds is extremely brief to a point where it is almost useless, one is better off going to the library or bookstore to actually buy a good reference on welded joints. The chapter on bearings could use some expanding, it feels "rushed". And the last chapter is almost useless as well, it's almost like a tease. They mention interesting and very useful machine components but they offer little calculations for them, like the chain drives and the torque converter. Why bother mentioning it? It's not a reference, it's an actual machine design book. Another thing I found interesting is that for a couple of chapters and homework problems they refer you to information from websites online. Thing is, it is a book most would like to keep, but what five years from now? Will these web pages still be up? Overall it is a good book. But better books are out there.
Required textbook for a Machine Design course. Much more accessible than Shigley's (although that is apparently a classic textbook on Machine Design - I have both). Better explanations and seemingly more thorough on the applications side compared to Shigley's.

As a work for non specialists, "A Time to Die" is an excellent, well written, and thoroughly explained piece of journalism. It is written for laymen, yet does not condescend to people without a background in submarine operations. The K-141 'Kursk' sank on August 12, 2000 off northern Russia during a training exercise after an aged torpedo exploded in the bow of the boat, sinking the ship rapidly to the 350 foot deep seabed. 28 men survived in the aft of the ship and lived in a cold and dark environment for several days before being killed by a rapid flash fire.The elements that led to the tragedy are compelling. The Russian navy was (and is) in utter disrepair after the breakup of the USSR, and rescue submersibles were among the first budget cuts made. Only several days after the 'Kursk' sank was help from England and Norway solicited, due largely to national pride (and fear of espionage). The entire debacle happened only a few months into the Putin administration and proved to be a watershed in Russian politics.Moore tells the story from the viewpoint of the survivors, the would-be rescuers and the victim's families, with special emphasis on deteriorating Russian capabilities (and the preventable nature of the disaster) and the political forces that doomed the survivors to a sure death. Overall it is a superb telling of the salient points of the tragedy, its investigation, and aftermath. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book, particularly the pictures of 'Kursk' in drydock after the accident. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a general treatment of the technical side of the disaster and an in-depth covering of the political machinations involved.
The author appears to have taken great pains to insure the accuracy of his account of this tragic accident. The information is presented in a manner understandable to non-technically inclined readers. It offers a sympathetic view of the person's involved in the actual rescue efforts while not mincing words concerning the culpability of those whose decisions and actions hindered the rescue efforts. Overall it is an excellent work covering one of the most tragic events of our time.
The book, itself, is written in such a way that even the most mechanically inept people can understand what, why, and how what happened happened, but those with a background in mechanics will find this book just as interesting, due to the little "nuggets" throughout the book that prove interesting to those with a working knowledge of submarines. This IS a book that should be considered a "must read" if you want to know more about the incidents surrounding the doomed submarine.People with a background in history will also be interested in this book, because of the story BEHIND the scenes, so to speak... the story of how the "politicos" in Moscow tried to tamp down the disaster. That was what caught me by surprise the most... the fact that it seemed like this all happened in 1980's Russia, rather than the Russia of the 2000's. This IS just MY opinion, but Putin bungled the whole incident, and I didn't have a single nice thing to say about him after reading this book, but that's probably a discussion best had in a totally different forum.
. This telling really examines the story of the sinking of the Typhoon sub Kurst and the loss of all aboard. The pitiful state of the Russian military in the 90s is really the culprit responsible for the disaster and the inability to respond to the situation. Much of the book is a reconstruction of the events base on the evidence retrieved after the sub was raised. The incompetence and secrecy of the Russian system but eventually accountability was delivered to many of those responsible for this disaster but the real culprit was the desire to have a viable military without the money to actually do it safely.
Not sure what drew me to this book some 12 years after the event. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remembered hearing about the disaster and I also remembered some eerie pictures I'd seen of the Kursk sitting on the ocean floor.Robert Moore has done a bang up job of piecing together the loss of one of Russia's most prized submarine's: The Kursk, and put it into language that all of us can understand.The book tells us about the conditions on the base where the crew and their families lived. Also he outlines the limited resources and archaic equipment the men had to work with. He goes on to explain how budgets related to rescue had been systematically slashed year after year. The Kursk represented the cutting edge in stealth and attack but, ironically, should it encounter failure, the equipment to save the crew dated back to the 50's or earlier.Moore sets the timeline for the military exercise the Kursk was involved in on the day of disaster. Following failure to receive communications from the Kursk, ideas started to form there was a problem. Slowly the wheels of Russia started to turn and even slower acceptance of the realization that something was wrong. Help from Britain, Norway and the USA was initially declined by Russia due to distrust and the need to maintain secrecy. Meanwhile, men were dying horrible deaths in an impenetrable tomb some 360 feet below the surface of the Berents sea.Moore tells us about the families of the men receiving contradictory reports and deliberate stonewalling by the authorities. He also tells us how offers of help using far advanced equipment were viewed skeptically and declined for days by the higher ups in Moscow.Eventually, Norwegian and British divers got the hatch open on the Kursk and here the book, for me, became very gripping. Moore's writing does a wonderful job of putting you at the scene also, the writing puts you in the 9th compartment of the sub where the 23, who survived the catastrophic explosion, were huddled awaiting rescue.The book is written in laymen's terms and adequately details the events of a sad day for humanity as, undoubtedly, the value of Iron, steel, secrecy and politics were placed higher in value than the lives of men.
