The thing about this book is you learn things you had never thought before but always suspected. On the surface it might seem that it's not true or even just sensationalist. This absorbing ethnography acts as one subculture's corrective to Reviving Ophelia, in that it offers a refreshing portrait of adolescent girls who are far from insecure. In this refreshing portrayal of girls who are far from insecure, Levine presents a contrasting path to that of mainstream adolescent girls. While a graduate student in American studies at Harvard, Levine spent a year living as a "participant observer" in the Lubavitcher community in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, entering with the following assumption: "The possibility that these girls' lives could be anything other than the Platonic essence of feminine subjugation seemed as unlikely as a suckling pig on a Shabbos table." What she found instead is that Lubavitch culture nurtures most girls' inner and outer voices. Though they are not immune from adolescent concerns about fashion, weight, looks and cliques, the Lubavitch emphasis on each person's godly mission to bring the Messiah deepens their spiritual outlook; the single-sex environment in which they mature helps develop vibrant, expressive personalities. Those who clash with Orthodox strictures, however, experience intense and painful struggles. From interviews with 32 girls ages 13 to 23, Levine found "downright juicy" material and culled seven portraits of girls (disguised in name and background) in their "idiosyncratic splendor." The essays are sometimes repetitive within the context of the entire book, as if Levine wrote each to stand on its own, but her bright, lively narrative compensates. Levine invites readers to share the "pure delight" of knowing these girls, and challenges us to draw on Hasidism as an unexpected source in helping our own girls develop into secure, confident adults. Stephanie Wellen Levine's Mystics, Mavericks, and Merrymakers about teenage Lubavitcher girls. Levine lived in the Crown Heights, Brooklyn area for a year doing the research, which was academic, but the book succeeds and reaches far beyond its substantial academic roots. Anyone who has ever lived in Brooklyn knows the Lubavitcher Hasidic sect--claimed to be the largest Jewish organization in the world. They are the group that does outreach to other Jews, trying to bring the Messiah through an accumulation of good deeds done by Jews, such as lighting candles on Shabbos. They used to drive a truck called the Mitzvah tank around New York City, blasting music and inviting participation in their practice to anyone Jewish. Today, they are famous for their welcoming Chabad houses all over the world (and the brutal terrorist attack on one of these in Mumbai in November, 2008). Their outreach is unusual, as Jews, unlike Christians, don't generally give a high value to proselytizing. Even a staid, mainstream Protestant church like the one I grew up in had an ideal of going out into the world and witnessing and converting, even though we didn't do it much--everyone in town was pretty much already affiliated with one church or another. I have always been fascinated by people whose belief is strong enough that they feel privileged to grab people by the lapel and try to convert them. I am also fascinated by closed systems, whether religious or political, that have all the answers. It seems wonderfully comforting to me-- and also stunningly wrong-headed. The Lubavitchers are one of these groups with a complete, self-referential system and all the answers. They also prove to be, in Levine's book, a varied, warm, intelligent, supportive and enthusiastic community. They welcomed Levine into their homes, confided to her about their lives, and seemed genuinely puzzled and hurt that in the end she returned to her secular life in academia instead of joining them. The book is organized around representative individual girls who range from those who are deeply enriched by the mystical teachings of Chabad--indeed uplifted, glowing with delight at the insights their study and meditation give them-- to some serious rebels who drink, socialize with men (and Lubavitchers keep high walls between the sexes) and eventually leave Crown Heights, albeit with sadness over the loss of their warm and nurturing community. One of Levine's fascinating and perhaps broadly applicable insights is how strong and lively the girls are in their largely single sex lives: they make deep friendships, tease their teachers and disrupt their classrooms, delight in clothes and parties-- and then switch quickly to religious studies and rituals. All of them are expected, of course, to marry early and produce many Jewish babies. The complexities of these lives-- the success and the failures-- make up the texture of this wonderful book. I'm so happy Stephanie Levine has told us about her year with the mystics, mavericks, and merrymakers.

So, for the reader seeking a scholarly discussion of the Hasidic religious tradition's influence on the feminine psyche, this book may seem too repetitive; but, for the reader expecting a storyteller to reveal the complexities and variations of the Hasidic teenage girl's experiences through a sympathetic series of portraits, this book should be satisfying.In the end, Levine's exploration of Lubavitch culture epitomizes the adage that "you can't judge a book by its cover" and enlivens the old idea that we can find insight into our own culture by examining another. What she offers for most readers is the chance to challenge preconceptions, and come away with a fresh perspective on American life.

This was such a wonderful eye-opening book about the variety of girls in the Lubavitch community in Crown Heights. This book breaks the stereotype that says that girls from very religious families become "drone-like" or don't have their individuality. Within their very prescribed world, because of the teachings and influence of the rebbe, there are countless opportunities for personal exploration and expression. It was inspiring to me as a mother of a girl as well; I want my daughter to have some of the passion and commitment displayed in these pages!
The book has been covered, it was quite good, though best as an introduction for people totally unfamiliar with the culture.Particular to the Kindle Edition - no page numbers, and indexing is not linked. this book had a good history of the rifle but very little practical information for anyone who knows anything about firearms. I was hoping for an exploded view of rifle and tolerances and measurements. also a chapter on buying extra stuff like ammo vests. I give it 2 stars just because the first and last chapters were interesting.

I enjoyed this CD recording with Pastor Osteen reading his book. I find his voice and enthusiasm relaxing and believable.
I love Pastor Osteen's books. I ordered this one for my brother and thought it a little odd that the hardcover price was less than the paperback book. I figured it must not sell as much so the price was lowered. Little did I know that the hardcover was a tiny book smaller than a man's wallet (see dimensions). Just wanted you to know just in case the size of the book matters. Content-wise... I'm satisfied.
I have always been a huge fan of Joel. I don't listen to the hype about his money, and blah blah. His words are so motivational and uplifting. He really knows how to touch your heart. Great words.
I love listening to Joel Osteen. Each Sunday my husband and I listen to him and always gain something from his sermons. The reason I enjoy him so much is because he's got something for everyone. He constantly reminds me that God loves me just the way I am, and as long as I'm trying to do my best, God gives me promises in the Bible. But I didn't know where to find them. I read this little book each day and have found those promises from the Bible that we're promised to receive, but we have to be in agreement and remind ourselves that the Lord wants to give the promises that we need to be willing to receive.I know it's a small book. But the size of the book is filled with amazing things, reminders we need each day.
Not a fan or follower of Joel Osteen but a truthful person, I have to admit, this is a good and well-written book. Easy to read and easy to put into practice. This book is full of promises that we as believers know are true but sometimes can wonder if they will ever come true for us. Only criticism of this book as that he should have put the scripture reference next to each scripture.
I love this book. I use it as a companion to the book The Power of I Am. It is wonderful. A nice reminder that God is GOOD, not waiting to pounce on you for messing up, and also that you can change your attitude to embrace hope instead of feeling like you don't dare expect more. It is not a "prosperity" thing as much as it just provides hope and lets you open up to expecting good things. If you are ready to start looking forward instead of grieving over the past this is the book for you.
This book helped to break out of a dark place in my soul, after being betrayed by my husband. Their affair had started before he married me, and continued during our 18 years of marriage, until her husband knocked on my door.It was just a verse, a short synopsis, a short story per chapter. I couldn't stand to read much more while my soul was in that horrible place. The book geantly prodded me back into the arms and thinking that can only come from God.Since, I've bought it as gifts for anyone I've met that needs an encouraging word.
I really enjoy Joel Osteen, great to wake up and listen to the Word and the hope that it gives. I believe in what Joel is saying because he does back it up with scripture, and I know the verses he quotes. There is always hope in the Bible and Joel with his little booklet (this is very small booklet) enables people to have it on their person without having a large book to carry. Its very easy to put in a handbag or in a man's pocket where one can pick up and declare these promises of God. For the above reasons I can say its a good purchase.
I have read/listened to this book daily for several months and will continue to do so. Thru a very trying year (death of a parent, divorce & etc), this book has really focused me on what's most important in my life - having a close relationship with GOD. I have read/listened to several of Joel's books but this is the one that I will continue to read daily with my bible. Thank you Joel for writing this book of declarations.
