I just bought a new ASUS Transformer that is running Win 8.1. Coming from a laptop with Win 7, I needed considerable hand holding in order find my way around 8.1. After reading the reviews (something I really appreciate with Amazon) I decided to try this book. It not only looked like it had what I needed, but it was also available as an eBook. I got it instantly on my Fire 7HD and was able use it right at my side as I wandered through my new ASUS. I am impressed with the overall coverage which seems to me to be written in a rather 'middle of the road' manner. This is, not too simplistic, but also not too technical. The author has included small side notes on either side if the main text that will explain some things in a simpler manner for those with limited experience as well as side notes for those who would appreciate more technical details. I have just read the first four chapters, but have found them very helpful in understanding how 8.1 works as well as some very handy tips and shortcuts. I am looking forward to reading through the entire book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is migrating to Win 8.1. Incidentally, I have found it extremely handy to have it as an eBook at my side on my Fire while using the Transformer.
Unlike in the past, software companies today -- every one that I have encountered, from the uncomplicated to the extremely complex -- do their customers a disservice by selling their products without manuals. They think they're saving money; what they're really doing is creating a generation of ignoramuses, who don't recognize, understand, or know how to use the features which their software manufacturers have spent so much time and money developing. I am amongst those who were very happy with Windows 95/98, XP and 7, but who strongly dislike Windows 8/8.1. I suspect that had Microsoft sold this manual with their product, they would have won over people like me, who have been long-time users but resent having to discard much of our past acquired knowledge about Windows because some developer thinks it's a good idea to do things his/her way.Pros*The author has done a great job in clearly explaining the operation of, and philosophy behind, Windows 8.1, with relevant explanatory images*Handsomely designed, easy to use book, with instructions to match*Book has a great index (a rare feature today)Neither Pro nor Con*I miss the CD, but the website has the information which would have been included on the CD, and it works well (therefore: no real loss)*The book is expensive, but worth the price*I have read David Pogue's New York Times columns, and found him a bit of a smart-aleck. There is some of that in this book as well, but I am the first to acknowledge that this is a matter of taste and, notwithstanding this comment, it does not affect the great value of this book.Cons*Book is heavy, but that offers the opportunity to build arm strength ;)*I wish there were books like this for some of the other software I use.ConclusionMy initial purpose in using this book is to make Windows 8.1 operate as much as possible like Windows 7 on a recently purchased Windows 8 computer, and there are many ways in which one can do that (even down to the Gadgets, which Windows 8 developers chose to delete). Pogue explains that Windows 8.1 is actually 2 systems, Windows 7 and the Tiles, so this is quite within the realm of achievement and I have been very pleased with the results.In the future I may become interested in trying to understand why MS developers believe I would want to lean across my desk and put my fingers on my 2 monitors to perform an action, when I could instead achieve the same results with my mouse, without constantly leaning over. If I do decide to try and understand Win8, this is the book that will do the job.Bottom Line: Thank you, Mr. Pogue. Great job.
Windows 8.1Missing manual? What manual? I’m an experienced computer user since the days of DOS, and have made my way through all the iterations of Windows since version 3.0. I recently purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and had my first introduction to Windows 8.1. There was certainly no documentation with the computer that gave any clue to navigating the new user interface, it took me several days to begin to use the computer in a productive manner, learning by trial and error. And there were more errors in the beginning for sure.But this review isn’t on Windows 8.1, it’s on the missing manual. And this book by David Pogue is comprehensive (932 pages) and well written. It even has an index of 32 pages. For most users the biggest hurdle in dealing with the new operating system is the tiled interface. This book explains the reasons for and the use of the tiled “tablet†interface, and explains the gestures need to utilize the new interface with ease.One of the biggest complaints that users have about any operating system is their frustration with the myriad ways to complete a particular action. David Pogue charts a middle course, he doesn’t list every way, but he tends to show how to complete the action with the mouse, with the keyboard, and if applicable, with touch. He also touches (sorry) on using Windows 8.1 in much the same way that Windows 7 is used, which will be the most common choice of those who work with programs such as Word, Excel, and Photoshop. He covers the “touch†interface which is likely to be used most commonly in tablets and some touch-enabled laptops. As is usual with David, his descriptions and explanations are clear and unambiguous.I think this book is a must have for those who wish to understand the features of and utilize in full the productivity of Windows 8.1. Highly recommended.

It's really well done in terms of simple explanations (but also has a surprising amount of detail) and has cute illustrations. I highly recommend this book (and the series) to any science oriented parents.
The subject is matter. It does a pretty good job explaining the concept to young kids. My 2nd grader just read it. Although the age range is up to 3rd grade, these books also reinforce science concepts to my 6th grader. Four stars because in this series there is inevitably there is always 1-2 pages they don't do well.

I have multiple copies of this book in print version, but Kindle version is very disappointing. The book requires you to cross reference the day of the year in the back with the specific meditation, which is numbered sequentially. With the book version, it's very easy--typically I even leave a paperclip marking the appendix at the back, look up number for today's date, then refer to it. Very difficult to do in Kindle version. And, sadly, author/publisher didn't link dates to pages which would have been the logical step to take.I LOVE this book--hard copy it gets a 5-Star, but Kindle version very poor.

Its availability as an e-book only makes it better. The day-by-day format works perfectly on my smartphone. It somehow has a more lasting presence, not being dependent on the physical necessity of a paper page. I'm definitely pro-book, but some wisdoms, like this one, travel better (in my experience) than conventional books I like the relatively recent new cover, also. It well captures the sense of 365 Tao. My delight is complete -- and as a Taoist, I am fulfilled. My only question: what to do in a leap year? Does the Tao mysteriously grow another day? ;-)
This man is a genius!!! How can such heart-warming and intelligent guidance come from one person. I treasure the book and am so glad it came to me! I am having a rough time right now due to the death of a close friend and this book has helped me be calm and move forward. Such good ideas to think about and savor thru out the day.

This book was comprehensive in it's description of the Inca culture. It was probably more detailed than my daughter required for her 5th grade report but that is not a bad thing. Some of the activities included in the book are kind of boring and not that exciting for a kid.

This is an outstanding book. It will take you into the cockpit of a single-seat F16 fighter, both technically and emotionally. USAF fighter pilots undergo a series of selection processes that is as much psychological as physical, progressively skimming off the best of the best, followed by a regimen of intense training and evaluation that never stops. Pilots of the F-16, nicknamed the Viper, were at the pinnacle.Hampton can also write. He takes you into his mind as well as the cockpit, strapped down and festooned with gear, for a strenuous eight-hour ordeal with five mid-air refuelings, attacking ground targets and dodging ground-based missiles: just one mission of many. He doesn't pretend he is fearless; he forces himself against all instinct to act as though he is. In one instance he admits that despite his cockiness his breathing matches his pulse rateA few prior reviews have criticized the writer for arrogance. Not so. Machismo, yes. His book knocks non-pilots, other pilots, foreign pilots. As an ex-fighter pilot in the RAF I'd say that's how fighter pilots are, and you're supposed to get it.Still, he knows he and his comrades are insufferable. In an episode in the Officers' Club between missions, charged with "testosterone, adrenaline, and alcohol," he portrays himself as a jerk who gets dressed down by a more senior, battle-hardened fighter pilot.So if you can sink yourself into this book you will have an experience. But don't expect Lt. Colonel Hampton, the USAF's most decorated F16 pilot -- with twenty years' service, 151 combat missions in Iraq, Kosovo, and the first Gulf War, 21 kills, 12 medals, and a Purple Heart, to be a shrinking violet.
Hampton writes in an easygoing, accessible style, peppered with appropriate doses of fighter pilot bravado. Frequently funny and brandishing an "'Murica damnit" sense of humor, I did enjoy this book.If I had one criticism it would be how the depictions of various strike missions tend to blur together. When you are reading your fourth or fifth description of an air-to-ground strike on a surface-to-air missile site, it's nigh impossible for the average reader to keep track of what's north, south, east and west, up, down, who's inverted and who's not. I am not sure how to correct this flaw except to dial back on the (in some cases) excruciating level of detail.
I am a military pilot wannabe. Many of these personal stories about flying do not capture the experience, or add so many tedious details. This book seems perfect in that balance of covering essential details, but keeping the pace for the story. The author tells enough of his own story with the bigger picture of world events that precipitate military actions to result in a very readable and memorable book. It would be a great novel if it were fiction, but even better because it all happened. I just wish my boss would rotate out every three years or so! Whoops. Yeah, I'm not a pilot. If you enjoy military flying stories, READ THIS BOOK!
I liked the detail in the book and essentially the life as a fighter pilot. I think some additional detail or talks about some of the missions would have been great to have. The author only really talks about his first real combat mission during the 1st Gulf War but doesn't talk at all about the rest of that war. I know the Iraqi Air Force and Army was a lot stronger then, and our weapons only got better going into the 2nd Gulf War. His details though were great, I'd like to see him maybe write some fiction fighter pilot war stories, I'll bet they would be great given his background and first hand knowledge.
Flying has always been a dream of mine and did have a brief stint some years ago. But Dan Hampton takes flying into a high rung of resourcefulness to attain air wings of flyers that make our world safer. Although the book is a riveting adventure into a technical flying machine that perhaps someone should be predestined to achieve. These flying machines are not for everyone as they depend on a sophisticated individual that must be intuitive, super intelligent, and psychologically fit. Dan Hampton takes you into the seat of his F-16 machine for hours on end and thrills you with his skills and endurance to do battle and to lead his fellow wingmen to victory.A wonderful experience for anyone wanting to know what goes on inside the canopy of these super airmen.
I do not like to read, but I finished this book in one sitting. Even without having read many books of the same genre, I seriously doubt there is any better account of the modern-day Wild Weasel fighter pilot. If you want to know what it's like to fly a fighter in combat today, read this book. If you might be offended by real language, spoken opinions, and the true danger of aerial combat, then buy the book, read it, and have your eyes opened a bit. The detail of LtCol Hampton's accounts is impressive and accurate. Like most significant emotional events in life, combat is hard to explain. Every person who has been in harm's way has his or her own individual experience. Each experience is just as difficult to convey as the next, but LtCol Hampton has done an excellent job of bringing us to the fight, and feeling like we are on his wing. I WAS on his wing, a lot, and as an FNG, I'm glad I was. This is an excellent book written by a talented pilot. I am writing this review for the book, but I would rank 2Dogs just as high as a pilot and leader. Yes, he is confident, yes he has pissed people off, and yes his book is all about HIS experiences. Average guys with uneventful lives who please everyone usually don't have much of a story to tell. Those guys can be found down in the 1-star area of this book's reviews. Go ahead, read all their opinions, but then see for yourself and form your own opinion about 2Dog's story. Trust me, Viper Pilot will not disappoint.

I was disappointed in this book. The reviews I read said it was a book used by school counselors and other therapists.... I find this hard to believe. Not that the book was bad, it just does not cover much at all on alcoholic/drug dependent parents (which was on the front cover). In fact I bought this book for my teenage grand daughter, read the book myself, and do not feel she would gain from reading it at all. I had hoped there would have been more advice for teens on how to deal with abusive and/or alcoholic parents. I felt for the cost of the book (I purchased used) it felt well under any expectations I had.
As a school counselor in a high school, I have used this book (and its previous edition) many times. Having a parent with mental illness is a tremendous challenge and burden for teens. This book provides practical strategies for teens and speaks with a voice that is clear and compassionate. It is a phenomenal resource and support.
This is an excellent book for all of the reasons described in the other reviews. As a counselor, I recommend this book to my clients who have teens. The purpose of this review is to let fellow amazon customers know that a NEW UPDATED EDITION of this book is available through other sellers for $18.17 (at the time of this writing). The updated version has a slightly different title, but per the table of contents, contains all of the material in this book, addresses the abusive, alcoholic, and mentally ill parent, and includes additional helpful information. A lot of books on troubled family members - whether it is a parent with a mental illness, an abusive partner, a child with substance abuse problems - end up focusing on the person with the primary problem. Just like in real life, the attention is drawn to the biggest chaos and the loudest noise, putting the reader - who is seeking help - in a secondary role, and sometimes all you are left with, is the part of understanding therapist.This book focuses solely on the children of troubled parents, their feelings and thoughts. It gives specific advise on how they can better cope with what they are experiencing, both short-term and later in life. By only touching lightly on the type of problems parents may experience and the erratic behavior they may display, the author does not create a conflict of loyalty for the young reader. Children can read the book and focus on their own feelings and reactions, which they may sorely need living under the circumstances described.The language is simple, maybe a little childish for the oldest teens, but the concepts are sometimes complicated and a stretch for the younger ones. Older children and teens cover such a range in development and it is difficult to speak to them as a group. I think this book has succeeded in reaching them all.
