"The Shakers: Two Centuries of Spiritual Reflection" is an excellent effort at understanding Shaker beliefs.The book, from its introduction by Gertrude M. Soule, flows very well and gives good detail of the key aspects of Shaker life throughout the nineteenth century. The first writings are a testimony to how Shaker community served to give experience of the Divine to each Believer and direction to his/her life. There is an excellent description of Joseph Meacham's viewpoint of how Shakerism relates to the life of Christ, and there are several other simple but effective sources later in the book.The next section deals with the way in which Shakers lived out their lives within the context of the Gospel and how Shaker theology was related to the ideal of Christ and Wisdom of earlier sects. Indeed, the whole chapter shows Shaker theology possessed a mystical spirit vased on the idea of the Light of God and the discernment of spirits. This areas shows how Shakers taught "to make the way of God their occupation" and how Shaker writers believed themselves illuminated by the divine Spirit.The third chapter "Sharing The Christlife" turns the focus away from theological matters to practical Shakerism and the observation of a religious life. Here we see the character of celibate communalism that was a fundamental Shaker doctrine and how the interests of each Believer must be the interest of all. Shakers felt the Spirit led them into this order, and in the fourth chapter we see a return to theological reflection. Because Shakerism believed God to have both male and female attributes (Ann Lee was seen as the Second Coming by believers), this part focuses on the role of Christ, and simple description of the birth and life of Christ are most effective to see Shakerism's connection to the Peace Churches of the Reformation.This part is more difficult to read than the relatively unchallenging earlier parts, but illustrates the manner by which Shakerism was effective in developing the humanity of Christ in a way rarely seen since the first millennium. There is a lengthy treatise on historical redemption that illustrates Mother Ann's historical role, and on the dual nature of the Godhead and Trinity. The last two chapters focus on the role of spiritual gifts in Shakerism that served to enhance their lives beyond rigid routine. The gift of peace, unity, and simplicity so evident in Shakerism during the nineteenth century are put out impressively throughout these parts. Written in touching mystical language, they show Shakers as people possessed of a truly joyful spirit.Focusing on as many Shaker writers as possible, the book gives a very good understanding of who these people were and how they evolved during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Rather than becoming incongruent, the use of many authors illustrates the communal spirit of the Shakers.An impressive historical resource.

This volume respects "the Believers" and kindly reveals them to ecumenically minded folks. Students who can appreciate a tradition with a fluid nature will enjoy this book.

Wonderful, helpful book on screenwriting. This book has helped me immensely in writing my own screenplay, which I quickly realized I was lost in and I needed some education on it. I took a lot of notes while reading The Story Solution, which is so practical in its guide for writing. It doesn't teach a formula for stories, but it very plainly says, "A hero must have this goal, then another, then these complications must happen," etc., and there are virtually infinite variations for that to keep the audience's interest. That to me makes it more helpful than more abstract books about screenwriting (though those can be very helpful, too). And it's a fun and exciting read. I loved it and will probably re-read it several times.
I've been working on the first draft of a novel. The scenes have been planned out (and replanned and replanned) and I've been working my way through them, considering the first draft a big brainstorm. I knew there were still structural problems. For example, the events seemed to be out of order as far as their impact and the heroine has been passive. By the time I finished reading this book on structure, the structure of my novel was completely replanned. Now the heroine drives the story rather than reacting to it and the story drives hard toward the climax just like it should. All the hills and valleys are there now.The part about characters was really great, too. This book provides a lot of examples of roles that characters should play, and this part really brought my novel to life. It had people in it, of course, but they weren't assigned specific roles that I understood very well. This book really pushed my WIP to the next level.
Never before have I read a book about story structure that is THIS BRILLIANT.I've read books that encourage authors to write down a character's likes and dislikes, behavioural nuances, as well as other such hogwash. These books fail to realise that a character liking the colour blue and who flicks their hair when they're nervous DOES NOT make for a compelling character. Advice like this has lead to an abundance of hair-flicking Mary Sue characters who passively wade through their story until they accidentally stumble across The End.Eric distills characters down to their most important function. Reality is, stories shouldn't happen DESPITE the characters- stories should happen BECAUSE of the characters. Eric shows us how to do things right."23 Actions"... although this book does detail these 23 actions in the latter part of the book, everything before this is also gold. I could never figure out why my dialogue was always so weak. Now I know.If you've ever suffered from a plot that flounders and sags half-way through, or had trouble bringing stories to a proper resolution, or had difficulty writing characters who make things happen, or if you've even suffered from writer's block, I recommend reading this book.The only writers I WOULDN'T recommend this book for are those who 1) are half-way through a book already (because reading this book will make you want to scrap everything and start over again, or 2) are greatly opposed to the idea of planning out your story in advance.This book still leaves the hard work up to the writer. But Eric sets the writer on the correct path.Needless to say, I've applied Eric's advice to my own work, and it's already 100 times stronger for it. I can't believe that following the advice of one book has had such a dramatic effect on the quality of my storytelling.
I have read over 200+ books on screenwriting, a most difficult craft to master (I am still on this long journey's path!), most such books rehash the same old same old. Regardless of whatever how-to book(s) on screenwriting you have read so far, get a copy of this book as soon as you can and read it cover to cover. Twice. Three times. Aristotle's three acts, and the typical 8 or so plot points one learns from Syd Field, Michael Hauge, and others is fine for some fundamentals. Then there are a few books that even teach structuring a film minute by minute (literally, as in 120 story beats, a book I read recently). This approach, 23 sequences or beats, seems like the best yet. I already created a template with the 23 actions each hero must take, plugged in my outlined beats for a supernatural thriller I am currently writing, and it worked perfectly. Kudos to the author, Eric Edson, who obviously knows the craft-- he has written many feature screenplays, and also is a professor of screenwriting at UCLA-- who better to get down to business and share wisdom on the craft of proper story development.

Last year I purchased M: Business by O.C. Ferrell for the Introduction to Business course I enrolled in. I really enjoyed this text and felt it complimented the course very well.The texts layout was very easy to read and follow. Important vocabulary was highlighted throughout the text and also defined in the margins of each page. I found this especially helpful when working on homework and studying for exams. This text also provides the reader with up to date examples of different aspects of the text, allowing this generation to easily relate to each of the different examples given.I did find it strange that this text does not provide the reader with a glossary of important vocabulary at the back of the book for quick referencing of definitions. Most other business texts—really most other textbooks in general—provide the reader with a glossary of definitions at the back of the book. Ferrell does provide an index of topics, in alphabetical order, with the corresponding page numbers in which the reader can find more information about each topic on. This approach provides the reader with all of the information available in the text on a topic or term, but when looking solely for the definition, this is a roundabout way of providing the information to the reader in my opinion.One aspect of the text I found to be particularly helpful was the active review cards located in the back of the textbook. My professor recommended we do these cards as we worked our way through the course, but did not require us to turn them in. I decided to use them to review and study for upcoming tests. They are perforated, so you can remove them and set them next to you as you work through the text to find the answers, which are provided on the back of the card for you to check yourself. Each chapter’s review card works through learning objectives and practical applications of what you learned in that portion of the text. Overall, I would recommend this text if you are purchasing it for a college course or are looking for an informative text on business. It covers a wide range of business concepts, from starting and growing a business to financing an enterprise. After reading M: Business you may feel qualified to teach your own introduction to business college course!
because it was clean and the pages were nice. I just didn't like the time it took me to receive it because my class had already begun while I was still waiting for my book. although I received it the time it was estimated but that wasn't sufficient enough for me in regards to my education. that's all.
Really easy to follow book if you decide to read it. I passed the course with an A an never read anything in a chapter other than the Bold Print words and their descriptions. But if you choose to read, its not hard to follow...its pretty simple stuff.

Siempre he sido aficionado a la fotografia pero desconocia de muchas cosas que el autor menciona y aclara de manera sencilla. No solo aprendi tecnicas, aprendi como sacarle provecho a un jobie y vivir de él.

The code presented in this new book will not run due to changes (at least in part) to Beautiful Soup, which is used throughout the book. I'd love to get my $30 back to apply to the new version of the book when it comes out. Amazon seems to indicate the book is due in April '18 but the author's blog indicates it is not due out until the fall of '18. This book is useless as is so I'm not so sure I want to support the author by buying the new edition when it comes out. Lesson learned: don't buy any programming/technology books more than a year old as technology just changes too quickly.
This is mostly a beginners' manual, so don't expect extremely complicated programs or tips. However, if you are new to web scraping, this is a great introductory book to the tools available in Python and their uses. In my case, I had learned most of what was in the book using trial and error (and lots of time going through Stack Exchange questions!). If I had had this book before, I would have saved a lot of time learning the basics.
This is a truly excellent book. It is the closest I have seen in a book to the experience of sitting with a friendly, approachable expert who is ready to answer your questions intelligently and in a supportive way. You need the very basics of Python as can be learned from the Pycharm educational version but everything else is provided.
90% of the time this book has exactly what I needed to solve a real world problem. 10% of the time, it went over my head and I spent hours on YouTube shoring up the material I couldn't gain from the book. In example, the section on storing data in MySQL via PyMySQL was a bit too short, unclear for me to get a real handle on how to automate db queries with Python.Nonetheless, as an entry level python programmer, I found the book mostly readily accessible. If you're an experienced coder (python or otherwise) this book is a great investment in your data acquisition skills.I'll end on a positive note - my boss likes weather updates for our offices in four different cities (we do logistics.) He wants this report at 6:15am daily. I was able to write a .py script that scrapes the webpage, compiles results into a string, logs into my email account and sends the report to him daily, on time. Now I never have to worry about this early morning task again!If you need to automate the retrieval, processing and delivery of online information, this book is for you!
Good at describing how web scraping works but does not go into a lot more details on most areas. For example, it lacks completely as how to handle cookies. It's true that the requests library handles the cookies automatically but if the cookies need to be manipulated, it doesn't describe how such can be done.
After learning the basics of Python I really struggled to dig into a project. Programming, just like a foreign language, leaves your memory quickly if you don't use it. I had tried web scraping with several video tutorials, but couldn't work through the tutorials to the point of understanding how to build one myself. Then...I got Ryan Mitchell's book. This book sets you up with not only the basics, but also more advanced techniques that you'll need to really build out your scraper. Ryan touches on other subjects such as using a database, working around data hidden in Javascript, cleaning up data, using NLPT, and more. You'll get a solid foundation to launch into your own Web Scraping project, and learn just enough about additional topics (like MySql) to integrate them into your scraper. I really appreciate how Ryan made this approachable for both a Python beginner, and for an intermediate user.
Good book with some good tips. Fairly basic but does touch on some advanced scraping techniques briefly. Author does a good job and I would absolutely recommend this to others looking to learn more about extracting info from web pages.
Clear, concise, and engaging. I have been able to easily translate the lessons into practical projects. The author spells out the considerations for using each particular technique and the situations in which some might be more effective than others. The chapters are mutually reinforcing but you may find yourself skipping around if you already know what you want to get out of web scraping. This should not be your first python book.

This book was read to us when my DS's school had a Parent's "Stay Play" I saw the reaction to the children as the teacher read the book and had to bring it home for him. When it arrived, his eye's lit up and he screamed Momma Wolf's Coming. He's 2.5 years old and loves turning the pages on this colorful book and repeating the words he remembers from story time. It's a really great book and I love just interacting with him as he excitedly talks about the book! I highly recommend this book to any toddler!
One of our favorite books. Had to buy another hard copy as ours got dog earred after a few kids :) It is suspenseful, even a might scary for some children as the wolf is drawn in the typical vein of big bag wolf. The end leaves the reader pleasantly surprised and asking, "again?!" The illustrations are some of the most detailed and colorful, text is big enough to read comfortably.
Great book! Read it to my grandson who is four and he loves it.
My 3 1/2 year old granddaughter's favorite animal is a wolf. She absolutely loves this books and wants to read it all of the time . Some of the pictures were a little scary the first time we read the book. I also had to explain what a surprise party was so she could comprehend the story. After the first reading , she loved the story. She even told me the wolf "turned over a new leaf and that's why the animals liked him and gave him a party." A wonderful life lesson learned!" I highly recommend this book.
This book, a favorite of mine, was a gift to my niece's daughter, age 3. I actually ordered 2 copies one for her and one for me. She loves this book as do all the children at a school where I read. Not only are the illustrations and story captivating for young imaginations, but the surprise ending delights, and teaches how preconceived notions aren't always accurate! I WAS SO HAPPY THIS BOOK WAS AVAILABLE .....as it was published sometime ago.....This story is one of my all time favorites.....its sure to delight children ages 3 to 6 and readers ages 18 to 95!!!
So our daughter came home from school and earnestly told us that Wolf is Coming. We weren't sure if this was some veiled and creepy Doctor Who reference or something else. Suffice to say, we were relieved when we finally learned that it's all about a surprise birthday party for their friend Wolf. He's not going to blow your house down; he's there for his party!
Excellent book! Not too much print, but a lot of communication via the illustrations. The colors of the illustrations are some of the best I have ever seen on printed children's books. It's a bit of a mystery story, and ends well, unexpectedly. I wish I could illustrate this well!
My 2 year old granddaughter loves this story. I had to read it five times the first time I read it to her. She loves howling with the wolf and exclaiming "Surprise!" as we read it. The illustrations are great. A winner.
