The narrative is very fluid and I like the way the author swings between (i) the history of financial markets in 70/80’s, (ii) the rise and fall of Salomon Brothers and (iii) his own personal experiences inside the firm. The amplitude of the themes changes a lot, from broad to narrower topics, but the author manages to crisscross between them while holding the links and maintaining the flow. Besides, it is interesting to see how transparently the author shows that some prejudices people have about banks and financial markets professionals were intensely true. The book made me wonder how it may have been to live in such a unique work place and to regularly sleep and dine at places perhaps as impressive as some salaries mentioned: Le Périgord, Bristol, Tante Claire, Plaza Athenée, Claridge's, everything charged to the firm’s expense account. As the book mentions, some traders viewed the expense account as a soft-dollar compensation system.
Michael Lewis wrote this, his first book, in 1989. I was thirteen years old when it was released - it was one of the rare nonfiction books that received enough fanfare and furor that it penetrated my world. I didn't read it, of course, but I was aware of it because it was talked about on a variety of TV shows and news broadcasts.I didn't read a Lewis book until Moneyball, but after that I was hooked and gobbled up The Big Short, Flashboys and the Undoing Project. After finishing his book on those Israeli psychologists, I picked up Boomerang, The Losers, The New New Thing and now Liar's Poker. Despite enjoying all of the aforementioned books (The Losers is a dream for people that follow politics), I was hesitant about Liar's Poker because I figured it was a dated book about Wall Street in the 1980s.I am pleased to say that my concerns turned out to be unjustified. After graduating from the London School of Economics, Lewis fell into a job at Salomon Brothers (it was eventually absorbed into Citigroup). His first few months were spent with 120+ other young professionals with newly minted premium degrees (lots of Harvard and Stanford MBAs) in the Salomon Brothers highly regarded training course (an indoctrination series, really).A few chapters covers the training course and the various professionals they were exposed to, as well as a history of both Salomon Brothers and the bond market. Lewis goes to work in the London office, where he was moved from a lowly trainee to a lowly geek. He learns at the heels of two extremely gifted salesmen and within six months, after completing a major trade, grows from a geek to a BSD (read the book).Lewis was sitting next to the CEO of Salomon Brothers on the day of the Black Monday Crash and provides us with the helpless reactions of the traders on the floor, as well as the calculating response of his two mentors. Less than a year after the crash, Lewis left Wall Street because the belief in the value of money and those who made it had been shattered (he also acknowledges that he made enough to be comfortable and obviously wanted to write a book).The housing collapse and stock market crash of 07-08 had it's roots in the 1980s scenes where Lewis describes the unscrupulous taking advantage of customers and the belief by the Street that the government would always bail them out. 28 years after it was first published, the book is still relevant and quite entertaining.
Michael Lewis has an uncanny ability to take a subject----any subject----even one as typically "mundane" and boring as the financial world, and somehow bringing it to life in such a way that the reader is riveted from start to finish. I first read this book when it was new and was utterly astounded by his humor and ability to explain even the most convoluted economic concepts and turn them into "page turning" reading. I have since read/purchased all of his books, as well as having read his articles in Vanity Fair, and have yet to be disappointed. Whether he is entering the world of Silicon Valley's techie boom, NFL football, or the economic crisis in the Euro Zone he never fails to deliver a brilliantly written, absorbing, and somehow humorous take on his subject. I am certain that there is no topic which he cannot investigate and write about in the most entertaining yet informative way. This is a replacement copy of my original book which has been lost in our library's cosmos, but it is one that I simply must own. Long before Leo's "Wolf of Wall Street" or Michael Douglas's "Greed is Good" portrayal, there was Michael Lewis' spot-on depiction of the crazy 80's Wall Street boom and its excess. I really can't speak highly enough of Mr. Lewis' talent and writing ability.
I am a huge Michael Lewis fan and this was the one book of his that I had not read. The book, in my opinion, is by far his weakest one - which is understandable as I believe this is one of his earlier works. The book follows his short career at Saloman Brothers in the 1980's. It is interesting to see inside of a Wall Street firm at that time and to see the ethics (or lack thereof) - only on Wall Street is it acceptable to use your "customers" as a place to offload junk product that you do not want to keep for yourself. The book is really a timeline of his employment at Salmon Brothers and, unlike his other books, really lacks any other central theme to hold it together. It is mildly entertaining, but if this had been the first book of his I read, I would have missed out reading all his other fantastic books.
Lewis is prolific and entertaining. I have read only half of the books he has written but someday I will have read them all - he's that good. This book describes his early days, just out of college, as an investment banker. The locker room language may be a bit coarse for some readers; this book was not on my church's book club list. It is funny, probably 97% true and mainly a good read. The mammoth-sized egos which are depicted are similar to what I have seen in many sales environments and the military where everything seems and may even be, bigger than life.On more than one occasion, I had to stop reading because I was laughing so hard, wondering, "Did he really say that?! Wow! Are there really people like that?!" My early life in Manhattan, right after college was an adventure, but a mild one compared to the stories in this book.

This is a concise anthology of important Zoroasrtian texts translated from Avestan, Old Persian, and Pahlavi to English. The author, Prods O. Skjaervo, is one of the world's leading experts in Zoroastriamism, Iranian Studies, and Iranian languages so this book couldn't be any more authoritative. The book gives concise introductions to Zoroastrian sacred tests, theology, history, and ethics. The other chapters are devoted to newly or translated for the first time English renditions of influential texts. From the source itself the Avesta to stone inscriptions from the Sasanian period. Other very useful features include a glossary, list of texts, and a superb bibliography for further study.My only complaint is why with PF. Skajaervo’s expertise and a field full of brillant Zoroastian scholars, there is no new complete English translation of the Avesta and Pahlavi texts? It would be greatly appreciated. As a student, I wonder why my professors aren't planning of doing a full translation. There has not been a full English translation for over 100 years! While this book is very valuable, wouldn't it be easier to just make a full translation rather than publish occassional snippets or portions of these texts? Anyway, that was my rant of the matter but I strongly recommend this book to students and scholars who need concise introductions to texts and the bibliography for further study.

It's a pretty basic introduction to the subject with plenty of original literature from various sources, though I wish it offer some more insights on its overall structure of the the topic and what the outlines of its basic philosophical aspects and how they formed up
Prior to reading this book, I had encountered many references to the ideas and texts of the Zoroastrian religion, mostly in relation to the Vedic religion and mythology (with which early Zoroastrianism shares much in common), as well as with regard to its influence on the beliefs of the Hebrew and early Christian religions. However, as many of these references are often presented in passing and with very little context or explanation of Zoroastrianism, I was searching for a book that would provide me with a fairly simple overview of the topic before I explored the religion further.This book provides an excellent introduction to the sacred texts of Zoroastrianism, as well a brief overview of its beliefs and rituals. The first section of the book (comprising roughly 40 of the 260 pages of the book) introduces the background and history of the religion and its texts, as well as summarising a variety of aspects of Zoroastrian belief including Creation and cosmology, gods and demons, Eschatology, the relationship between body and soul(s), and ethics in clear and simple terms.The remainder of the book contains modern translations of various Zoroastrian texts, from both the older and younger Avesta (including the Yasnas, Gathas, Yashts and Vendidad) as well as number of later inscriptions and Pahlavi texts (i.e. Middle-Persian, around 9th-11th century CE). These texts are arranged by topic in order to correspond with the subjects introduced in the book's first section and are organised together according to their source (Old Avesta, Young Avesta, Pahlavi text, etc), which is both highly convenient and easy to read.With regard to the criticism expressed in C. Dalrymple's review on this site, most of the reviewer's questions are answered by Professor Skjaervo in the preface and editorial notes in the first few pages of the book, and are further explained throughout.For example, because this book is part of "The Sacred Literature Series" by Yale Univerity Press, Skjaervo points out that "the size of the book was limited, and I decided texts were more important", rather than filling it with excessive notes and discussions. Skjaervo states that "All the translations are my own, although I have, of course, consulted existing translations and discussions", and provides a list of resources, both books and online, for further reading on Zoroastrian texts, history and religion. In numerous places he points out where translations are uncertain or contested and lists the possible or most likely equivalents. For example, we see how the old Vedic gods Indra, Sharva (Shiva) and Nasatyas from around 1500-1000 BCE are transformed centuries later and emerge as the evil "demons" Indar, Sawul and Nanghaiyth. In addition, what we call 'gods' or 'deities' are more commonly referred to as 'lords' or 'spirits' in this tradition, which can be confusing for some more used to Western theology.Lastly, the reviewer's comments about Zoroaster's authorship in parts of the Avesta and the analogy of contesting the authorship of the Bible - we find precisely this kind of reaction to the recent scholarship and archaeology which demonstrates the polytheistic nature ancient Israel (see Israel Finkelstein, William Dever, Mark S. Smith, etc) and the unlikelihood that the Pentateuch was authored by Moses himself (the 'Documentary' hypothesis). If such critical scholarship offends you, I'd recommend avoiding books such as this one.All in all, a great, simple introduction to the texts and beliefs of Zoroastrian. If you are looking for a more in-depth examination and discussion, I would recommend books by Jenny Rose and Mary Boyce.

I absolutely disagree with C. Dalrymple. This is a great book. If by controversy he means scientific method vs blind religious belief, there is not much to say about his comment. A great book, easy to read for both beginners and more experienced. If you are familiar with the works of Professor Skjaervo you know you wont be disappointed.

I have found this book with its 6 books inside to be one of the most reasureing set of books that anyone could owen. If read as one should, with an open mind to hear what the auther is passing to the reader, it is assured that peace and calm will be found. Also much of what many say is to hard to understand of the Bible will become clear. I will warn that the book titled 'the Great Controversy' will be hard to read, only because it speakes of History. Not History as most know it but as it realy was. If you don't like what that book says don't blaim the Auther, blaim history. Would I recamend it to others? In a heart beat!
Anyone interested in knowing JESUS and all He has done for us, needs to read these books. You don't hear this preached from pulpits today and that is a tragedy. A big source of what is wrong with today's society.

About the Author
Paul E. Billheimer and his wife began a tent ministry in Anderson, Indiana, in 1936 that grew to include a Bible institute, a Christian high school, a Christian day school, and, in 1957, a Christian television station. His books include Don't Waste Your Sorrows, Love Covers, Destined to Overcome, and Destined for the Cross. He and his wife spent their later years working with Trinity Broadcasting Network. They were married for 63 years and raised three children. Paul Billheimer passed away in 1984.

Paul E. Billheimer's book on prayer, "Destined for the Throne" is the most innovative book I have read on the theology of prayer in quite some time. Most books on prayer are distractions. They tell you to pray more. Tell you how often Jesus or a tremendous saint of the church prayed. Tell you about people who pray for hours, fast for weeks, pray a specific formula, pray in a certain way, that you need to pray more, or that you certainly don't pray enough and that is why the whole world is going to hell. In other words, they are books about prayer that don't really encourage you to pray, they just keep you from praying. Such books can be summed up in four words: "Prayer: Just do it." Billheimer's book is not in that league of prayer book, THANK GOD! This is a book on the theology of prayer as it relates to the destiny of the church in eternity and with Christ. A powerful and encouraging book about Bride of Christ spiritual warfare that stirs you to pray by revelation instead of by formula. "Destined for the Throne" explains the simple reality that God has chosen to use the prayers of the Church to move mountains, break chains of bondage, change societies and quite possibly get that unsaved or backslid loved one into a right relationship with God. And that our prayer mission prepares us for the life to come during both the Millennial Kingdom when we shall reign with Christ on earth, and then afterwards, in the period of the New Heaven/New Earth and the New Jerusalem. You WILL want to pray more after reading this book. I am encouraging more people to read this. Because the Church needs to pray. And this prayer revelation is the kind of revelation which can prevent God's people from perishing as we pass through these "Last Days" closing years of the Church age into the permanent presence of our Lord in eternity. Recommended? Yes, and highly so!
At 134 pages, Destined for the Throne is not a big book. But it took me nine months to read it, because what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in depth and power.I came across Destined while review-hopping at Amazon. When I finally got around to reading the book I had forgotten why I had bought it. But it didn't take me long to remember.Billy Graham forewords the book by saying that "every" Christian looking for a deeper witness should study this book prayerfully and apply its principles. And Billheimer himself introduces the book as what some will consider a "totally new and unique cosmology".I've got to say that most of what Billheimer has written is not new to me at some level, but never have I seen it stated so clearly and powerfully. He puts his case together so thoughtfully, logically and circumspectly that the book's immediately huge impact only grows as one continues to read.Basically, Billheimer's thesis is that "the primary purpose of the universe... is the production and preparation of an Eternal Companion for the Son", and that "since she is to share the throne of the universe with her Divine Lover and Lord... she must be trained... for that role".The ramifications of this understanding are astonishing. If the thesis is true, then all our experiences must be viewed through its lens. Trials and sorrows aren't merely to be somehow borne with otherworldly patience, hoping for some vague reward in heaven. Rather, they are to be spiritually assayed according to how they can be used to conform us in Christlikeness and prepare us for our heavenly dominion as kings.I found Billheimer's angelology amazing. I know that because of the incarnation, man in Christ actually has become greater than the angels. But Billheimer sees further into this mystery, saying that the angels are "not made in the full image of God". I initially found that very hard to accept, but the more I think about it, it is the only explanation I can fathom for God choosing to make man the focus of His redemptive program. After all, God is not impressed with power or grandeur. It is entirely consistent that He would show His greatest work in a very blind, impoverished being.Billheimer progresses from cosmology to the mystery of prayer, and relates the two. Why, he asks, did God center the entire building of His Kingdom around the medium of prayer? Why would God, who knows everything, and has all power, voluntarily limit Himself to working through the prayers of His church?The answer is twofold. First, it is in prayer that we draw near in ontological union with God. This is our priestly role. If we had power of ourselves, we would employ it independently of God, which would lead to disunity and chaos. So it is necessary that we continually draw near to God and conform our will to His in order to tap into the power available to us. The forms of prayer that most effect this aspect are repentance, thanksgiving, praise and worship.Secondly, through prayer we engage in a spiritual warfare that not only manifests Kingdom victories in the temporal realm on earth, but which also raises us up in authority and power as kings fit to rule the universe - a task to which we are destined, just as the book's title asserts.Billheimer thus constructs a theology of prayer in which prayers prayed in God's will simply must be answered - if the church will persist in praying. And lo and behold, this is exactly what Jesus told us in Mark 11, Luke 18, John 15, and several other places.The book ends on the power of praise. As we exalt God, we ourselves are lifted out of our sodden earthly perspective, and we begin to see according to eternal realities.This actually has been a difficult review to write. I think that it took me so long to read Destined because its subject is an area I need to do a lot of work in. Just as Billy Graham stated, this is a book to be studied carefully and digested prayerfully.If you're looking for an excellent theological challenge and some amazing encouragement to your prayer life, I strongly recommend Destined for the Throne. It's on my list for a reread, soon.
Prepared to sit beside the Judge of the Universe - Who, ME? Not so incredible as it first appears. But that is a position you are destined to fill, provided you meet and pass the challenges. How is that possible, even if it is probable? Billheimer leads the reader step by step through the necessary preparations that few are willing to undertake. Jesus warned that the 'gate is narrow and the way straight, and few there be that find (search for) it. You won't make it if you don't really care, but a 'reward' (crown, not cheap either) awaits those who dare to accept the challenge. Get off the broad path to destruction by reading your Bible, assisted by this challenging book!
This is a very interesting book full of great views that will challenge your views regarding yourslef as a child of God, the role of "The Church" and God's purpose for us all. I have enjoyed reading this book, which I am still reading. Give yourself time and a quiet place to read and re-read and digest the information, I would also suggest have your bible available to look up scriptures so you can research and study. Whether you are a new christain or "seasoned" christian this book is for you, becasue it will get you thinking about what really is the purpose and the point of prayer and the power behind it. If you want to read something that isn't old hat or if you are needing to find something to stir you up and get you praying this book is it...
This is one of my top 10 books. I have been a Christian for almost 30 years. I read this when I first became a believer and it touched my life. I read it again just recently and I must say the wonderful blessing it was to me again, giving me an eternal and triumphant perspective on life, ministry, and tribulation. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to go deeper in their spiritual walk.

This book is not as described. It is not any or hardly any quotes from St. Therese. It is just a book that shows you some Bible passages that YOU have to LOOK up in YOUR own Bible -- I don't have a big Bible to look through. Anyway, the rest of it is some meditations based on Bible passages. NO, St. Therese -- buy something else.
There is so much in this book. I will be going back to it a lot.
