Having been disappointed in the earlier investing books by the Gardners (You Have More Than You Think and The Motley Fool Investment Guide), I found Rule Breakers, Rule Makers to be a solid and satisfying investment book. That was a pleasant surprise. If you decide to read any of the books by the Gardners, I suggest this one.The book is a combination of a conceptual search for outstanding growth companies to buy stock in, along with a quantitative discipline to test your thinking. This is also unusual in investment books, 99 percent of which are qualitative only.The first half of the book focuses on Rule Breakers, newer companies that have successfully established a new business model that will emerge as the new standard in their space. The examples are pertinent and interesting to consider. The cases are turned into specific guidelines for you to consider in selecting stocks.In a time when new business models are created much more frequently than ever before, this is a superb focus for an investment book. I strongly suggest you read and focus on what is said here to select the companies.Generally, you will not be able to pick stocks that will outperform the market. See John Bogle's excellent book, Common Sense About Mutual Funds, to learn more about why. The only approach that I think has a chance is to locate business model innovators. My research into top performing stocks has shown this factor to be determinative for many of the best companies.The Rule Maker section looks at more mature companies that have such market power that they can create a successful future for themselves. The main benefit is that it may be easier to sleep with a portfolio full of these stocks because they are typically not as volatile and as high priced as Rule Breakers.I particularly liked the appendix where 12 companies (AOL, Cisco, Coca-Cola, Dell, Disney, Gap, Intel, Kmart, Microsoft, Nike, Pfizer, and Schering-Plough) are evaluated using the Gardners' methods. This makes it much easier to understand their concepts.People who love the usually flippant style of the Gardners may not love this book as much as I did. The book is more conservatively written and framed than the usual Motley Fool style.But where money is concerned, clarity should be selected over humor. I think the Gardners made the right decision.If you are interested in stocks that may well grow faster than the market, I suggest this book as a solid way to evaluate the potential candidates. The book compares well to other books that look at this same question, being more specific and helpful. I also suggest that you consider the thinking in ChangeWave Investing as a test on your ideas drawn from this book.Well done! Good luck in applying these concepts to an appropriately-sized part of your portfolio when you can buy outstanding companies cheaply!! We may be nearing such a moment later in 2001.
I bought this near the peak of the Internet mania and at first the advice contained within was gold. Later I realized that many stocks did well simply because of dot com mania. Still, the book is a well-written, often quite useful collection of strategies for managing a portfolio.This book is not for the casual trader (it requires management) but it provides good advice to keep in mind. I think if the reader considers that these strategies require fairly regular vigilance, they can be helpful. If you don't have ample time to maintain a portfolio and check your assumptions, this (like any other investing strategy) can be dangerous -- although it's not especially risky I will concede that!Humor-wise, this is 5 stars. I enjoy the attitude of the Gardner brothers -- that all things in life should be enjoyed, even investing, so I still recommend this book as part of a balanced COLLECTION of good investing books. Just don't expect THE investment bible.
The only thing wrong with this book is it ends the trilogy I have so enjoyed. But work with The Fools has just begun. This week I buy my first stock! (Five shares of Whole Foods Market.) In this book, we learn David from Tom. Up till now, the trilogy has been written as "we." In this final book, David takes the first half, Tom the second. I love them both, they are what brotherhood should be. READ THIS TRILOGY--beginning with You Have More Than You Think. Please.

About the Author
Dante Alighieri was born in 1265. Considered Italy's greatest poet, this scion of a Florentine family mastered in the art of lyric poetry at an early age. His first major work is La Vita Nuova (1292) which is a tribute to Beatrice Portinari, the great love of his life. Married to Gemma Donatic, Dante's political activism resulted in his being exiled from Florence to eventually settle in Ravenna. It is believed that The Divine Comedy-comprised of three canticles, The Inferno, The Purgatorio, and The Paradiso-was written between 1308 and 1320. Dante Alighieri died in 1321.

I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.
With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.†I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,†and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.
THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.
Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

It's been years since i managed to have the interest and attention to read a book cover to cover in one sitting. This book brought exactly that. It reads more as a spiritual journey and an enlightening story than a typical surf book. This won't teach you how to duck dive or how to pick a line, but it will open your mind and your heart and have you cracking a smile every so often. Well written and entertaining, Simon Short creates a quick read that entices the reader to get back in the water and to reevaluate life - or at least part of it. A great read for anyone who's battled with depression, had a serious passion for a "luxury activity" and not just for surfing.
This book is a great, short read that you probably won't be able to put down. Mr. Short helps put things in perspective about, surfing, work, relationships and life. He does a good job of taking the reader through the ups and downs of life and explaining the importance of keeping things in balance and following your instincts. I recommend this book for non-surfers as much as surfers. It goes a long way towards explaining the hook that keeps people addicted to surfing. I'm looking forward to more of his work.
This is a great read for everyone, not only surfers. It discusses a lot of the issues that we all face daily. Topics like living our best lives, sacrifice, health, a connection to nature, and appreciation are all explored. These themes are discussed through the lens of the surf world. I would recommend it to anyone.

This book has great stories and advantages that Simon goes on to find himself as a Surfer and Human. I recommended this book to everyone. Its prefect if you want to understand what its like to be an Average Surfer. GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!
Very relatable, informative book. It's a quick read, but definitely worth picking up. I'm a surfer living in landlocked Connecticut, so you can imagine my frustration only getting to occasionally paddle out. The author hits on a plethora of valid points when it comes to the work/family/surfing balance. (He is very lucky that his partner surfs...I don't share that luxury!!) I don't feel so bad about obsessing about surfing after reading this book. I'm not alone!!!The revelation that so many of us are "average" surfers is spot-on. Having the Kindle version, I found myself highlighting a lot of paragraphs. Some good self-help/self-improvement subject matter worth noting. The author is young, so I hope he releases a few more books in years to come.Much like I would recommend purchasing a custom board, I would say buy this book and support the independent scene. It's well written (I've recently read a few surf-related books that lacked focus and were fraught with typos) Mahalo!
I really loved this book. As a surfer myself, I immediately identified with the author's description of an Average Surfer. I chuckled my way through the chapters as his description is so true, I thought he was in my head!In this book, you learn all about the metaphysical effects of surfing, the biological effects of surfing and how this sport, percolated into a lifestyle opens you up to travel, adventure, community and caring for the environment. If you want to understand what makes surfers tick, why the attraction to the ocean is so intense, you'll find the answers in this book. I would recommend reading this book if you're a surfer (and even if you're not) as there is very sound advice on how to balance our lives to become better and happier people.This book is not a guide book to learn to surf, you won't find any advice on popping up, doing turns and balancing on a wave. However, the author does give some really good tips on how to face your fears, how to get out of the style trap and become a better "average surfer".Highly recommended!
