I have been keeping my lawyer-written will in Microsoft Word for over two decades and printing it out as changes are needed, but this year my wife and I decided to make some changes and I wanted something more in-depth. This program is very easy and it walks you through the process much like a tax program walks you through the tax question process. I do not have a particularly complicated estate, so the walk-through was pretty easy. I went through it several times, changing things slightly each time to try to get it closer to what I wanted. There were a few areas in the printed document that I would have liked to change, though. For example, if you have children, any common trust you set up expires for all children at the same time. (Yes, you can set up individual trusts and name the same trustee, but that seems overly complicated for the trustee.) And trusts dissolve at a certain age no matter what, so if you have handicapped children that will need lifetime care, you will need to look elsewhere. The program is DESIGNED for you to have to update it annually, or at least regularly, which is par for the course for Quicken, a company that seems to do everything they can to turn their applications into ways to sell you something else. You cannot, for example, define a process differently depending on whether any of your children are no longer minors or have reached a certain age. In the case of naming a child as executor, for example, you would have to list the oldest child as a second or third choice executor and depend on the first executor choices to decline to do it. There is also no separate provision or document for instructions or preferences. For example, you can define executors for the estate and trustees for any trust you create for your children, but there is no mention of guardianship (so you can't say who you would prefer your kids to go to) and no provision that says your kids can keep the cars you bought for them. I get the impression Quicken believes those types of things have the potential to void the will. I think there should at least be a separate document that allows you to state your preferences.Oh, the book is insanely long for the material that it covers.So....if you don't want to hire a lawyer, don't have a complicated estate and want a training wheels approach to creating a will, this program is pretty good. For the money, it provides a pretty good way to get a beter understanding of wills and what they do, but don't expect the end result to be exactly what you want.
Very easy interview process to set up your will and other important documents. There are some areas I would change as it will not let you leave some places blank to fill out later. Printing is kind of a pain in that every copy first prints the disclaimer information and instructions on what to fill out properly on the forms. If you are printing out several copies of the same form you do not require instructions and such with each one. A waste of paper there.Also used it to print out a Bill of sale on some equipment I sold but again you had to have the exact price and buyers name. I wanted to print up the forms in advance and fill out the small details later when I would not be available to the computer and it does not allow that.Otherwise and informative program and book to have.
I bought 2012 Quicken WillMaker Plus and instal on a descktop with Win 7 OS, after a few days of working with it quit responding(working). I called the customer support and the person who responded (an Indian)after several minutes of chnecking told me that if I wont to have the problem fixed I have to pay $50.00 to a technician. I was quite upset by the advise and I decided to buy 2013 edition instead which costed me only $31.49. I installed on the computer running on Win 7 and again I encounter the same problem - did not work.Then I Installed on a coputer with Windows XP and so far seems to work OK.So if you plan to use with Win 7 do not buy - it will not work.The book and the software are helpful though the Property Worcksheet would not let you type directly on it but you have to have Microsoft Work to uese for typing saving and printing.
I have purchased Willmaker 5,6 and now 2013 and each one was easy to use and the accompanying books were extremely informative and thorough. I have used the 2013 version when reviewing my parents' wills and because of this, provided my folks a checklist of a few things they needed to clarify with the attorneys who drew up their wills. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who wishes to create their own will. The simplicity of use and the accuracy of the final product is a great comfort; knowing that wills can garner strong scrutiny and the Willmaker product will hold it's own.
i am betting it is a solid bullet proof document. Uncontested will. I am sure it will stand up in a short probate. And I did it myself. Leads you right through each section, provides BACKGROUND legal information on each question, your options, etc. It will work for me I am sure. and NOLO is always a winner. Been using them for YEARS. After years of not having anything other than a will and beneficiaries selected for financial accounts I finally got around to putting together a comprehensive plan. Quicken Willmaker took me step by step through the process and seemed to be very thorough. Maybe a bit too thorough. Don't plan on sitting down for a half hour and getting this thing banged out. It helped me identify a part of my estate that would have had to go needlessly through probate. Also, I didn't really know how to put together a Health Care Directive or Durable Power of Attorney before using this program. I now have complete peace of mind with my estate planning. (I just hope it doesn't have to be utilized for a long time).
