Compassion and Meditation: The Spiritual Dynamic between Buddhism and Christianity, by Jean Yves Leloup

Review

“Jean-Yves Leloup is that rare Christian who has mined the spiritual depths and mysteries of Christianity. His Christianity is neither staid nor boring, but alive and deep, fresh and ancient. Buddhism takes on new meaning in this context so that we learn how the wisdom of each tradition, East and West, allows the Great Mystery to become grounded in our own being and from there into active compassion to our broken world.” (Matthew Fox, author of Original Blessing, A New Reformation, and One River, Many Wells: Wisdom Sprin)". . . worth consideration for an interfaith readership . . . " (Library Journal, Oct 2009)"If one wishes to make sense of the world, French Orthodox priest Jean Yves Leloup believes the tools are to be found in the Christian and Buddhist camps equally." (ForeWord Reviews, Sept 2009)" . . . [Leloup's] perspective on Buddhism is unique. . . . meditation practitioners interested in comparative religions may gain something from Leloup's perspective." (Publishers Weekly Religion Bookline, Sept 2009)"New age and spiritual libraries on both sides need this." (The Midwest Book Review, Nov 2009)" . . . worthwhile challenge for anyone wishing to learn more about meditative practices and comparative religion." (William J. Kanallery, MultiCultural Review, Vol. 19, No. 1, Spring 2010)"This book was a refreshing read. Too often when a book discusses two religious systems it tries to put one above the other, or tries too hard to erase any differences. Leloup takes the middle path and discusses two faiths without making one out to be superior, and without making them into one practice. Christianity and Buddhism are both revered, and kept distinct, complimenting each other like Mind and Heart; Compassion and Meditation." (Spiral Nature, September 2010)“Every great prophet or guru brings with him or her a central message, and Buddha and Jesus are no exceptions. Buddha brought the wave of compassion and Jesus, in my humble opinion, brought the healing energy of love. Unfortunately, in the process of ego personalities’ organizing of these messages for mass consumption, the messages are lost and often end up polarized with other systems. In no other time in history has it been so imperative to bring the world’s traditions into balance. This book dives into the commonality of both systems by revitalizing the original messages of compassion and meditation.” (Rahasya Poe, Lotus Guide, October 2012)

COMPARATIVE RELIGION “Jean-Yves Leloup is that rare Christian who has mined the spiritual depths and mysteries of Christianity. His Christianity is neither staid nor boring, but alive and deep, fresh and ancient. Buddhism takes on new meaning in this context so that we learn how the wisdom of each tradition, East and West, allows the Great Mystery to become grounded in our own being and from there into active compassion to our broken world.” --Matthew Fox, author of Original Blessing, A New Reformation, and One River, Many Wells: Wisdom Springing from Global Faiths In Asian spiritual traditions the mountain traditionally symbolizes meditation while the ocean signifies compassion. Jean-Yves Leloup uses this metaphor to compare Buddhist and Christian approaches to meditation and compassion to reveal the similarities and divergences of these profound practices. Emphasizing their complementary nature, Leloup describes how Jesus and Buddha are necessary to one another and how together they form a complete system: Jesus as awakening through love, and Buddha as awakening through meditation. Where Buddha represents the forests, Jesus represents the trees. Buddha is brother to the universe, whereas Jesus is brother to humanity. Nevertheless, these two religious traditions have a profound common ground. Compassion is, in fact, central to Buddhism, and meditation practices have been central to many Christian traditions. Both view murder, theft, and the destructive use of sexuality as great barriers to realizing our essential being, and both agree on the need to rise above them. Here, however, Leloup suggests that both faiths could benefit from the precepts of the other. The complementary aspects of Christianity and Buddhism offer the possibility for a truly profound ecumenical religion whose interfaith relations are based on deep understanding of the true meaning and practice of meditation and compassion and not merely shared goodwill. JEAN-YVES LELOUP is a theologian, French Orthodox priest, Coptic translator, and founder of the Institute of Other Civilization Studies and the International College of Therapists. His other books in English include the bestselling The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Philip, Judas and Jesus, and The Sacred Embrace of Jesus and Mary. He lives in France.

The back of my copy of the book says that the author is an Orthodox priest. Uh -- not really! But the chapter called Transmission is fascinating. It posits that Christ's words in the Gospel to the Samaritan woman at the well (known as the Orthodox saint Photini) were a transmission of the Christian tradition of still prayer (hesychia). It also tells the story of how the author learned this tradition on Mount Athos from one of the spiritual sons of St. Silouan. An irony is that he also mentions the Orthodox Elder Sophrony of Essex in England, who repented of his practice of Buddhist meditation as a young man! (See his book We Shall See Him As He Is).The writing in this book is far more post-Vatican II Catholic rather than Orthodox. Much of the rest of the book is basic Buddhism -- almost generic spirituality -- but that doesn't mean it's all bad, far from it. Every time I started wondering if this author had truly encountered Christ, I found some evidence that he has -- mixed in with everything else. And he does give Christ the last word!

For the Christian mystic, this is a phenomenal find. It is a wealth of knowing over time and spanning the many cultures and histories of the middle east. It brings their roots in Europe and shows their evolution. If you are searching, this book and this author is a must read. It really fills the bill for those who have mystic eyes and ears.

Excellent book showing where Christianity and Buddhism overlap at COMPASSION. I also enjoyed reading about Eastern Orthodox Christianity meditation practice and how similar it is to some Buddhist practice. It's not often you can read a Christian author who sets out to show how different religions talk about the same thing.

If you're a fan of Leloup you'll embrace his interpretations.

it is extremely quite dry for someone who has been working with energy for over 30 years how ever there is so stuff for me to download and assimilate into my everyday life

love it

Outstanding!!!! Very Pleased!!! A++++

I like short poems, and not just because I’m attention-span challenged. Short poems have punch. They are condensed emotion, and it’s rare to be able to keep beautiful sound resonating throughout long verse. So, it’s not a surprise that I would enjoy this anthology of brief poems from over 80 poets ranging from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries. There are between one and four poems from most of the poets included. I’ll list some of the poems that are particularly popular, personal favorites, or some combination thereof.- William Shakespeare: Sonnet 18 [Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day]- Robert Herrick: “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time”- Anne Bradstreet: “To My Dear and Loving Husband”- William Blake: “The Tiger” [often written “The Tyger”]- Robert Burns: “A Red, Red Rose”- Lord Byron: “So We’ll Go No More a-Roving” and “She Walks in Beauty”- Percy Bysshe Shelley: “Ozymandias”- Elizabeth Barrett Browning: “How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways”- Henry David Thoreau: “I Was Born Upon Thy Bank, River”- Walt Whitman: “I Hear America Singing”- Emily Dickinson: “I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died”- Emma Lazarus: “The New Colossus”- Francis William Bourdillon: “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes”- Ella Wheeler Wilcox: “Solitude” [Laugh and the World Laughs with You…]- A.E. Housman: “When I Was One-and-Twenty”- Gelett Burgess: “The Purple Cow”- Stephen Crane: “In the Desert”- Robert Frost: “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and “The Road Not Taken”- Carl Sandburg: “Fog”- Wallace Stevens: “The Emperor of Ice Cream”- William Carlos Williams: “The Red Wheelbarrow”- Joyce Kilmer: “Trees” [I think that I may never see…]- Edna St. Vincent Millay: “First Fig”- Langston Hughes: “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”- Dylan Thomas: “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”If you like short verse, you’ll enjoy this Dover Thrift Edition. It’s all works in the public domain, so don’t expect to find present day poets in the anthology. Also, probably all of these poems are available on the web for free, but the price is minimal to get them collected together.

When I was growing up,my macho friends drilled an ingrained dislike of poetry into my head. "Poetry is for girls and sissies, they explained." So in grade school, high school and college,I read Hemmingway,Mailer,Uris and their imitators and ignored poetry.Fortunately for me,during my senior year in college,I began to explore different forms of literature other than just novels. I developed an interest in short stories and essays and decided to take a closer look at poetry. But knowing nothing about this form of writing--I needed a tutorial--something to help me understand poetry. I chose the book "The Poet's Handbook"--by Judson Jerome to help me better understand and appreciate poetry. It was a good choice and I just finished reading it for a second time. But let's get to the subject of this review--"Great Short Poems". Some of my all time favorite poems are in this compact book--and I carry it with me when traveling to revisit the enchantment and magic of these poems.Whether you are a novice to poetry,a long time poetry lover or whatever--you will doubtless love the collection of poems in this book. And for a buck fifty--you can't go wrong.

The Poet is a "maker", he is creative. More than that, the true Poet is a person of intuition. He is a "seer". I learnt all f this when I was a young School-boy. In true and genuine Poetry we find the wisdom of the Ages and that is very important for human life. In this Great Short Poems we find all of this. There are the great names of the famous Poets; their beautiful thoughts matched bt equally beautiful words, phrases and sentences. It is such a pleasure to read the great Poets. To be dead in 'spirit' is a disaster! Human life should be full of beauty, interest, nobility. We can't all be scientists, leading politicians or doctors or professors. But we should all be 'wisdom seekers' be in a limited sense at east POETS. I highly recommend the reading of these Poems. They are an education. They should awaken the spirits of every-one. There are countless names I could name. Rather than do that, I urge you dive into the river of Poetry, be awakened to the beauty of Nature, the grandeur of the human spirit and above all to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Ignotus

I absolutely love this collection. These are short poems and tend not to be obtuse. I think I waited too long in my life to learn to appreciate certain aspects of life. Poetry is one of them. I love good poetry but struggle with anything lengthy or complicated.I start each day with a poem. It only takes a minute or two. These poems are chronological order according to the time of the author. I try to bounce around a little bit. If I am otherwise unfamiliar with a poet, I take some time to study that person and see if they have some other work available that I might want to read. I have learned so much about literature that way. I am very grateful for this work. This collection is perfect for such an endeavor. Thank You.

Great little book of poems that I originally bought for my now deceased mother who already knew most of them by heart, but was becoming forgetful due to dementia. Most of these I have heard all my life, so it was a pleasure to read them out loud with my mother, with her happily reciting what she remembered. Now I find that they live by my bed and I often re-read them for both their beauty and their wisdom. I was particularly pleased to discover how many early poets were women. Paul Negri did a great job of selecting some real jewels from Western poets over the last few centuries. What an inexpensive treasure trove of little masterpieces!.

I wasn't sure what to expect at first from this book, after all we probably all watched the news on that fateful day.It didn't come out quite as I expected, and I found it to be a much more personal and inward looking view of the life of this modest and extremely professional pilot, almost spiritual in some ways. It goes into some depth about his personal family life, sometime so much that you feel almost embarrassed to be reading such person thoughts and details. There is a huge overriding theme of professionalism, love of flying and respect of the flying gods who decide ultimately who survives and who does not. I feel humbled by his modesty and openness and sometimes feared for the safety of his marriage given the amount of time spent away, but ultimately the amazing bond between Sully and his wife and children shone through, even in the toughest times which were actually after the accident. What I never expected from this book is that it really made me look inwards at my own relationship with own my wife and children and examine my own professional and private life, to see where I could be a better person.Sully himself said that he doesn't consider himself to be a hero, and I have to say I agree, with the greatest of respect. He was thrown into a situation not of his own choosing, with no alternative, and no option to choose to do nothing. He had no choice but to bring all of his years of training and experience to bear to try and save his own skin and those he was responsible for that day. It is an automatic reaction and I am sure that any pilot would have tried just as hard. Not all would have made the right decision as to where to go, picked the right speeds or flap settings or even remained in control, which could have changed the outcome completely, but all would have been just as much a hero for trying. Sully is a consummate professional in his business, and I doff my cap to his abilities. This is no self-indulgent book solely about Sully, in fact it is often self-deprecating as he reflects on his own weaknesses and limitations. He goes to great length to re-iterate that it was a team effort, so the rest of the members of the crew are not forgotten, and the support of his wife both before and after clearly contribute greatly to the making of the man.If you read this you cannot fail to be moved and humbled and to think, "I want Sully on my next flight".

I ordered this for a b-day present for a friend of mine. Her b-day? June 29. She hadn't started listening to it until three days ago. She called and said she was having trouble with the audio. I took it to be that she was not doing something correctly on her playback system. Her observation was painfully apparent. 1) There is no Table of Contents or any other piece of information about this book/disk. It would be helpful if there would be a point of reference. 2) The actual words "Chapter Five" didn't show up until half way through the second disk. No other chapters were identified as they were read. There were stories being told that were never completed--cut off at the end of the disk and never picked up on the following track or disk. 3) The tracks would never play in order unless you were right there with a mouse to highlight the next chapter and click on it before another starts, i.e., track 3 would be followed by track 18. I realize that it is past time for refunds. I'm not even sure if giving something like this to a charity has any merit or not. It would only serve to frustrate another recipient. The best place is down the garbage chute. I could actually think of other ways I could throw away the price of an audio book. And I 'can't rate the subject matter of which the book is supposed to capture. I couldn't get enough tracks in order so as to tell a coherent story.

I downloaded this because I was supposed to go see the movie for work to understand Sully's approach to leadership and didn't. I wanted to at least be able to convince my boss that I knew what was going on, so I dug in.Sully, in his own words, walks you through the first time he relished he wanted to fly airplanes to the time after his heroic landing in the Hudson. I haven't seen the movie, but I don't know that I want to after reading this. Hollywood uses so much glamour in events like this and I'm afraid it would take away from Sully's authenticity, which is what actually makes this book.He revisits the event we've all heard about in the need on and off throughout the book, drawing comparisons from the training he had as a fighter pilot and the values he was raised with as a child. It easily could have read like a disjointed mess, but I really appreciated the way the book intertwined it all.I'd consider this a book that tells us much more than a story about birds flying into the engine of a commercial flight and more a story of who Sully I really is as a person that just happened to also be a heck of a pilot.

This biography of a singular event in the United States consciousness doesn't just tell of the event on that fateful day. Much more importantly, it delves into a lifetime of details that all contributed to the successful outcome. Sully doesn't mince words when it comes to sharing things that should have been set up differently by his employer. When they put materially deficient products into the cockpit, Sully tells us what the cost in convenience, confusion and time wasted as a result was. He tells of the many doubts he experienced after the safe landing. He tells about how his experience in landing safely catalyzed people around him, people who he never met, people who found new hope in an amazingly successful result when the most likely outcome should have been disastrous. The only thing that seemed 'off' was the sheer volume of content that seemed unrelated to the story and the outcome. This book is well worth the time to read. Inspirational would be the one word descriptor.
