I like short poems, and not just because I’m attention-span challenged. Short poems have punch. They are condensed emotion, and it’s rare to be able to keep beautiful sound resonating throughout long verse. So, it’s not a surprise that I would enjoy this anthology of brief poems from over 80 poets ranging from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries. There are between one and four poems from most of the poets included. I’ll list some of the poems that are particularly popular, personal favorites, or some combination thereof.- William Shakespeare: Sonnet 18 [Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day]- Robert Herrick: “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time”- Anne Bradstreet: “To My Dear and Loving Husband”- William Blake: “The Tiger” [often written “The Tyger”]- Robert Burns: “A Red, Red Rose”- Lord Byron: “So We’ll Go No More a-Roving” and “She Walks in Beauty”- Percy Bysshe Shelley: “Ozymandias”- Elizabeth Barrett Browning: “How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways”- Henry David Thoreau: “I Was Born Upon Thy Bank, River”- Walt Whitman: “I Hear America Singing”- Emily Dickinson: “I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died”- Emma Lazarus: “The New Colossus”- Francis William Bourdillon: “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes”- Ella Wheeler Wilcox: “Solitude” [Laugh and the World Laughs with You…]- A.E. Housman: “When I Was One-and-Twenty”- Gelett Burgess: “The Purple Cow”- Stephen Crane: “In the Desert”- Robert Frost: “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and “The Road Not Taken”- Carl Sandburg: “Fog”- Wallace Stevens: “The Emperor of Ice Cream”- William Carlos Williams: “The Red Wheelbarrow”- Joyce Kilmer: “Trees” [I think that I may never see…]- Edna St. Vincent Millay: “First Fig”- Langston Hughes: “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”- Dylan Thomas: “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”If you like short verse, you’ll enjoy this Dover Thrift Edition. It’s all works in the public domain, so don’t expect to find present day poets in the anthology. Also, probably all of these poems are available on the web for free, but the price is minimal to get them collected together.

When I was growing up,my macho friends drilled an ingrained dislike of poetry into my head. "Poetry is for girls and sissies, they explained." So in grade school, high school and college,I read Hemmingway,Mailer,Uris and their imitators and ignored poetry.Fortunately for me,during my senior year in college,I began to explore different forms of literature other than just novels. I developed an interest in short stories and essays and decided to take a closer look at poetry. But knowing nothing about this form of writing--I needed a tutorial--something to help me understand poetry. I chose the book "The Poet's Handbook"--by Judson Jerome to help me better understand and appreciate poetry. It was a good choice and I just finished reading it for a second time. But let's get to the subject of this review--"Great Short Poems". Some of my all time favorite poems are in this compact book--and I carry it with me when traveling to revisit the enchantment and magic of these poems.Whether you are a novice to poetry,a long time poetry lover or whatever--you will doubtless love the collection of poems in this book. And for a buck fifty--you can't go wrong.

The Poet is a "maker", he is creative. More than that, the true Poet is a person of intuition. He is a "seer". I learnt all f this when I was a young School-boy. In true and genuine Poetry we find the wisdom of the Ages and that is very important for human life. In this Great Short Poems we find all of this. There are the great names of the famous Poets; their beautiful thoughts matched bt equally beautiful words, phrases and sentences. It is such a pleasure to read the great Poets. To be dead in 'spirit' is a disaster! Human life should be full of beauty, interest, nobility. We can't all be scientists, leading politicians or doctors or professors. But we should all be 'wisdom seekers' be in a limited sense at east POETS. I highly recommend the reading of these Poems. They are an education. They should awaken the spirits of every-one. There are countless names I could name. Rather than do that, I urge you dive into the river of Poetry, be awakened to the beauty of Nature, the grandeur of the human spirit and above all to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Ignotus

I absolutely love this collection. These are short poems and tend not to be obtuse. I think I waited too long in my life to learn to appreciate certain aspects of life. Poetry is one of them. I love good poetry but struggle with anything lengthy or complicated.I start each day with a poem. It only takes a minute or two. These poems are chronological order according to the time of the author. I try to bounce around a little bit. If I am otherwise unfamiliar with a poet, I take some time to study that person and see if they have some other work available that I might want to read. I have learned so much about literature that way. I am very grateful for this work. This collection is perfect for such an endeavor. Thank You.

Great little book of poems that I originally bought for my now deceased mother who already knew most of them by heart, but was becoming forgetful due to dementia. Most of these I have heard all my life, so it was a pleasure to read them out loud with my mother, with her happily reciting what she remembered. Now I find that they live by my bed and I often re-read them for both their beauty and their wisdom. I was particularly pleased to discover how many early poets were women. Paul Negri did a great job of selecting some real jewels from Western poets over the last few centuries. What an inexpensive treasure trove of little masterpieces!.
