Review

Gary’s book, never more than a metre away, has been my indispensable research companion. With its easy layout, my well-worn copy, stripy with florescent marker and pencilled notes, has been my go-to, on-hand supervisor throughout my degree and has taken the distance out of distance learning. It replaces daunting and impossible with clarity and entertainment. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it; it has been my gateway to achievement. Author: Ellie Davies Moore Published On: 2017-03-20This book is in my view the best around on doing educational and social science research. It is refreshingly different from other research methods books; it is very readable, engaging and accessible for those without a social science background--rigorous and scholarly and full of helpful advice and guidance, and the updated interactive website is a real bonus. A joy to engage with, and I recommend it highly. Author: Peter Earley Published On: 2017-03-16It is a great delight that Gary Thomas has now updated this book for its third edition. Of the many books that seek to support students in undertaking their projects, this is the most accessible and clearest, whilst maintaining the highest standards of scholarly rigour - and it is also the funniest! Thomas really does show how undertaking research in education and social sciences can be a real pleasure. Author: Ian Menter Published On: 2017-03-09This excellent resource builds on the many strengths of previous editions and is accessible, comprehensive and extremely practical.  Offering fresh information and useful advice and guidance, it demystifies the world of research. Highly recommended for new and experienced researchers alike! Author: John Lalor Published On: 2017-03-28I use this book for undergraduate and postgraduate students projects, but even seasoned researchers can find some useful tips in this book. Gary Thomas demystifies research and makes its various components easy to understand. From identifying the research topic, through practical advice on writing the literature review, choosing the right design, analysing data and writing up the research report – the book makes research easy. The students like the textbook because the concepts are presented in accessible way and with some dose of humour. Easy to read and follow for research. I bought this as it was a required textbook for a class.

Great condition.

I ordered this book as a text book. It is exactly what I was looking for.I was thrilled that it showed up on time.Thanks.

A good general guide for students on how to plan and produce a research paper. The book is a good, decent size not too small and not too large. And it does a nice job of covering all the basics on the process of creating a research paper. The book can be used starting from Middle School all the way to Community College level. Of course this book is not for the really serious research papers on the graduate level. But for basic research papers especially for say High School level, this book would be ideal.

Anyone about to embark on a research project in education or the social sciences will find this book invaluable. Thomas writes with a wealth of experience of supervising both masters and doctorate students so this comes, almost literally, from `the horse's mouth'! Moreover, it is all carried off with a self-deprecating humour and lightness of touch from which some of his more, self-importantly ostentatious peers could learn more than a thing or two. That said it covers everything the graduate student will ever need about planning and conducting a research project and analyzing the resultant data from either a qualitative or quantitative perspective. Along the way you learn all you will ever need to about different research paradigms, such as positivism, socio-culturalism and interpretivism and how much you need to consider ontology and epistemology.

As an instructor I'm a bit torn on this book...it's very basic. For those searching for very general introductory information (high school level or perhaps freshman year at a community college) this would be okay. For those at university needing to get up to speed, this would probably not suffice. It's simply not in-depth enough to provide sufficient depth. On the other hand, it's simple to read and understand.

This is a great "pocket guide" for conducting research papers. It is small, and lightweight. It has information for finding good sources, developing a research question, and formatting the paper. It is helpful for those who have not had a formal research methods class, or just want to brush up on their skills.

Mr. Thomas leads students down a path to research project success in this little gem. I would recommend this for middle school through second year college-level students who are new to doing research. While I have not read the previous editions, the current edition is a worthy text.
