With minimal text and 300 pages of infographics, this is an amuse-bouche of history: just a bite of information that whets the appetite but does not satisfy. Created in consultation with directors and educational leaders at the Big History Institute at Macquarie University in Sydney, this title takes a broad, interdisciplinary approach to history through brief, pithy entries on a wide range of connected subjects. The layout is very similar to the entries in DK's "Eyewitness" books. The work is divided into eight "thresholds" that cover astronomy; the formation of planets and solar systems; the emergence of life and humans, civilization, and industrialization. Also included are a series of time lines. This is a great introductory text on life, the universe, and everything. Unfortunately, unlike an encyclopedia, this selection will not lead readers to other sources that will give them a deeper appreciation of the subjects covered. Tremendous publication! Very well organized, inclusive of practically all the aspects of our being, and cut into easily digested sections.
Good book
This is a gift for my brother. I watched the DVD's awhile ago. My search began when I wanted to know what happened since the beginning of the universe until the present. It may not be appreciated by someone who does not believe in evolution or the Big Bang theory. I am not sure about those theories but I was not offended by it.
We first heard about the concept of Big History in a TED talk by the author of this book, David Christian. The TED talk puts in perspective just how much has happened in the universe and on planet Earth long before humans came into the picture. Christian argues that all of this vast history is important to our understanding of who we are.In the introduction of the coffee table book "Big History," Bill Gates writes "Big History provides a framework for understanding literally all of history, ever, from the Big Bang to the present day." That quote sums up the book pretty well!This book does not go in depth into any one subject. Instead, it provides an overview of everything: the big bang, the expanding universe, formation of the elements and planets, Earth's formation, continental drift, the evolution of many different lifeforms, dinosaurs, and finally humans and civilization (of course I skipped over lots in that summary!) It's a great resource to discover interesting topics to deep dive into.Each spread covers one aspect of history, complete with illustrations, diagrams, quotes from famous people and experts, maps, and more. A timeline runs across the top of every page, indicating that section's place in our history. The very end of the book contains a textual timeline of human history, with maps of the world at different points in time. It's an intriguing look at how human civilization has developed.Overall, this book is a fascinating thing to have on hand. We like to open it to a random page -- we always learn something interesting.
This was somewhat of a disappointment. The opportunity presented to the author was tremendous, but there was a failure to talk about the relationships to how these different events related to the overall situation of mankind.
My dad loves it!
This is literally a big book of history. It is a heavy volume (when it slipped off the couch, both my husband and the dog came running into the living room, fearing disaster). And the book is nice overview of big topics of history, with graphics, infographics and a nice mix of text and visual material. It makes for a nice coffee table book, and the shiny dust cover is sure to attract people to flip it open. DK books have a nice educational series, and this fits in nicely with those, targeted at I think high school and older readers, to refresh on general knowledge, or to learn something completely new. It focuses more on general ideas rather than specifics, but may incite younger and older readers alike to start more in-depth research into a topic covered here. I think that this is a nice overview book, and will attract a wide range!
I have a bookshelf full of DK books for children and adults. The quality of the illustrations, the smart layout, the well put together content, never cease to amaze me. These books are a treasure and family heirlooms. Over the years, my children complimented their education and received so much sheer pleasure from reading them. I am always on a lookout for the next book from DK.
