I had a specific objective in mind when I bought this book. I'm in the process of writing a hobby level multi-user RPG for me and maybe up to a hundred or so other players (not many hundreds or thousands). I have a solid background in C++, less so in DirectX. I've bought many books on game programing to help me with this process and to my surprise I've found this one simply amazing while most of the others I've found to be little more than expensive doorstops. :) Like all the books of this nature, I read it in very much a "pick and choose" manner, focussing on chapters I liked and extracted code from the CD for places where it helped me. I found the material covered and, more importantly, the code representation of that material to be extremely helpful in my coding process. I believe the tips and code the book provides (which all compile and provide very reasonable and practical applications for the ideas demonstrated) saved me (literally) hundreds of hours of research (not to mention trial and error) finding methods that work and work well and covered all of the core componenets I would want in a role-playing game. It covered multi-player over the internet, 2d and 3d rendering in directX, how to construct combat, spells, chat, and inventory systems and a variety of other items. Naturally, I had to do a lot of customization to make the game do what I wanted it to do and I had to merge several of the ideas discussed into my own framework (for example the multi player network section is covered more or less stand alone where clearly other parts of the book need to be integrated with it to form a real game), but the result is I have a basic game up and running in a fraction of the time it would have otherwise taken, which no other book has ever really brought me.
The book delivers as promised. By the end of the book, you have a full working RPG mini-game that should help any developer get past the beginning stages. This book doesn't do everything for you. It puts you on the map. If a reader takes the time to understand the given code and READ the book, there will be gains to be had.The author does go into some basic ideas at the front of the book, but I don't feel the technical material covered is enough to completely educate a pure novice and is too simple for an intermediate programmer. Although ineffective, I don't subtract from my review ratings for additional information.I felt the author's technique was pretty well thought in this regard however. Someone reading the book finds the foothold where they first understand everything easily. This allows the author and reader to find the common stride needed for the reader to move forward.There is some issues with the book code that had to be solved, but the author has a website with all the changes. The big problem is more Microsoft's fault rather than the author's. The book was released with DirectX 8.0 and the MS team decided to change a few things with DirectX 8.1. Not to worry, the author has updated his entire book code with an easily downloadable patch.In Summary,Best book I've read so far. From Graphics, Sound, Networking, Input and much more, this monster of a book will make you a better game programmer if the time is spent with it. (Beginner to Intermediate C++ knowledge required. A small trip through the DirectX SDK tutorials a plus.)
I loved how the book explained everything. I have used DirectX books before and just done "what in the world..." because of how the information is organized. You have pieces of code and huge, long-winded explanations that complicate things. This book on the other hand explains everything well. Straight to the point and usually only gives you the history lesson when it's needed.Problem is... the source code. I tried things as the book explained them into the compiler. Some of the functions do not even work. You get a lot of:// g_pD3DDevice is a pre-initialized 3-D Device Objectwhich doesn't help much since it was explained only once.I got lost quite a few times because the book hardly had any complete sets of code. In a lot of books, there'd be code sections with compilable example code (that works) that shows you an application of the code being explained. There isn't much of that in this book. There are code examples on the CD-Rom, but they don't seem to fit the material in the book. I had to supplement the examples from material from Microsoft's MSDN pages.If you get this book, be prepared to use supplemental material (other book, online, etc). It explains how to do things well, but the source code inside wasn't very conducive to learning for me.

The fact that I finished a 600 page book in a few weeks indicates I found it interesting. On the other hand I marked in pencil passages that I found, well, noteworthy, and there were only about 3 dozen, which is only about 1 every 17 pages. Nevertheless, the letters were quite readable. I would have edited it much more severely, but I can imagine others found things interesting that I didn't.Murdoch is interesting to me because she was both a philosopher and a novelist. Her philosophical views (mostly from the '50's through the '70's) were somewhat influential. I especially liked her little book "The Sovereignty of Good." Yet she felt very unconfident, disclaiming (pp. 395 & 489): "I am not a philosopher." But later in her life (p. 571) she calls philosophy a sort of "addiction" for her. She was an extraordinarily productive novelist, publishing 26 novels over 40 years. I have read just two of her novels--I especially liked "Under the Net," and somewhat liked "A Fairly Honourable Defeat."Murdoch was one odd bird, at least in her personal life. She was bi-sexual, carrying on multiple seemingly physical relationships with both sexes at the same time, sometimes through a couple decades, with people as much as 20 years younger or older than she was. At least on the evidence of these letters (I haven't read her biography) she was very faithful to these people (and to her husband) over decades as a friend as well. In the mid-60's she characterized herself three times (pp. 293, 304 & 347) as a "male homosexual in the guise of a female," whatever that means. Perhaps the most positive spin on her polyamory is what she wrote (p. 347) "I can't divide friendship from love or love from sex--or sex from love, etc." And she had quite a healthy appetite for friendship.While she must have met a large number of famous people, she doesn't write much about them. She has a nice description of Sartre (p. 35), and while she liked Derrida as a person (pp. 511-12) she despised his views (pp. 511-12 & 573) and refused to consider him a "philosopher." She met Wittgenstein twice briefly, but there was nothing about those meetings here, unfortunately.Scattered throughout the letters are striking obiter dicta:1967, p. 337: "I think the Beatles ought to be jointly Poet Laureate." This gives her the distinction of suggesting a literary prize be given to musicians almost 50 years before the Nobel Committee got around to the same idea.1988, p. 548: "…revolting women's studies. Oxford now has a (ghastly) women's studies [major]."1988, p. 550: "Of course schoolchildren should never be allowed to come near philosophy."The one thing that gave me a person connection to the letters was her correspondence with Philippa Foot, whom I knew as a professor during my graduate studies at UCLA. Murdoch twice reprimands her (pp. 363 & 376) for writing illegibly in her letters, and even the address! I can identify with this, as comments that Foot wrote on seminar papers were in fact routinely illegible.
A wonderful collection of letters from one of my favorite authors who was one of the great 20th Century novelists and a prolific letter writer in her day. We are in debt to Avril Homer for this remarkable insight into the life of iris Murdoch.

This is a great supplement to the textbook. Too bad the textbook was not written as clearly as this supplement!
The subsections of this text book do not correspond with the associated cases. There are subsection titles after the cases, but it is unclear if the subsections relate to the prior cases or if the text is moving on to new subjects. I've been reading law books for three years, and this book is the most confusing, disorganized text I have had the privilege of reading. I don't have a problem with the content, just the placement (or attempted placement) of the content into the various subsections.
This is the 2nd worst law school textbook I have had to buy (Federal Courts will likely never be unseated from the top spot). Very poorly organized, and the notes after the cases do more to confuse the issue than clarify anything. I understand this is Conflicts, a known tough class where "right" answers do not necessarily exist, but this insult to injury is unnecessary. The book provides no context before presenting a case. The E&E for this topic is very good - and much more organized and actually covers numerous topics in more depth than the text. The Kermit Roosevelt (who is one of the authors for the text) supplement (Conflict of Laws - Foundation Press) is good, and definitely clarifies things - and he definitely hits on the high points of the text (though some of the book is his talking about how he would rewrite Conflicts Laws - which is actually really interesting - but will not be on your exam). Though the way the textbook presents the Modern Approaches (in a more disorganized, linear/timeline fashion) is probably more accurate to the way the law developed - it doesn't help the learning process. For me the E&E provided structure and got me enough background that I could put the rest of the puzzle pieces together.
Our professor used this as our course-book. It's a pretty good book though sometimes the notes after the cases can be confusing.
The book Conflicts of Law is excellent. The product was in excellent condition and already has served as an asset in my educational training this year. I would recommend this site for the purchase of further academic textbooks to any student/potential buyer.

Gary Thomas is a professor of education at the University of Birmingham. His teaching and research have focused on inclusion, special education, and research methodology in education, with a particular focus on case study. He has conducted research funded by the AHRC, the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation, the Leverhulme Trust, the Department for Education, Barnardos, local authorities, and a range of other organisations. He has coedited the British Educational Research Journal and is currently an executive editor of Educational Review. Easy to read and follow for research. I bought this as it was a required textbook for a class.

A good general guide for students on how to plan and produce a research paper. The book is a good, decent size not too small and not too large. And it does a nice job of covering all the basics on the process of creating a research paper. The book can be used starting from Middle School all the way to Community College level. Of course this book is not for the really serious research papers on the graduate level. But for basic research papers especially for say High School level, this book would be ideal.
Anyone about to embark on a research project in education or the social sciences will find this book invaluable. Thomas writes with a wealth of experience of supervising both masters and doctorate students so this comes, almost literally, from `the horse's mouth'! Moreover, it is all carried off with a self-deprecating humour and lightness of touch from which some of his more, self-importantly ostentatious peers could learn more than a thing or two. That said it covers everything the graduate student will ever need about planning and conducting a research project and analyzing the resultant data from either a qualitative or quantitative perspective. Along the way you learn all you will ever need to about different research paradigms, such as positivism, socio-culturalism and interpretivism and how much you need to consider ontology and epistemology.
As an instructor I'm a bit torn on this book...it's very basic. For those searching for very general introductory information (high school level or perhaps freshman year at a community college) this would be okay. For those at university needing to get up to speed, this would probably not suffice. It's simply not in-depth enough to provide sufficient depth. On the other hand, it's simple to read and understand.
This is a great "pocket guide" for conducting research papers. It is small, and lightweight. It has information for finding good sources, developing a research question, and formatting the paper. It is helpful for those who have not had a formal research methods class, or just want to brush up on their skills.
Mr. Thomas leads students down a path to research project success in this little gem. I would recommend this for middle school through second year college-level students who are new to doing research. While I have not read the previous editions, the current edition is a worthy text.

This book is wonderful! I bought it hoping to explore some new places and all I can say is each place ive visited so far has been a delicious delight. He shares the stories of some of the most remarkable restaurants, one is even an old gas station from the 1930’s!
